Perception of BSN students of Butuan Doctors’s College, Butuan City Towards the Role

of the Nursing Profession in the Implementation of Aksyon Baranggay Kontra Dengue

(ABKD)

Introduction
Situationer
The Philippines is categorically a tropical country in the south-east asia pacific where
"dengue epidemic season" is rampant during the rainy seasons, which is predominantly the
climate of the country for half of the year.

In a report by the DOH (2017), Dengue fever cases were reported by the Department of
Health (DOH) from January to the first week of June, impacting over 42,000 Filipinos and
resulting in 193 deaths. On the other side, there are fewer documented cases in Metro Manila and
its surrounding provinces, while more than 100 percent of incidences in the Western Visayas and
a portion of Mindanao were recorded. Dengue Fever (DF), a mosquito-borne viral infection,
causes a severe flu-like disease with a significant risk of deadly consequences if not treated
promptly. Dengue is spread through mosquito bites from Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus
mosquitos infected with one of the four dengue infection serotypes. (Alaye 2012)

The Department of Health of the Philippines, has devised a number of programs to aid in
the fight against dengue fever. In a study by Datinguinoo et. al (2018), four implemented
programs of the DOH were used to assess the level of acceptability and compliance among
healthcare practitioners and community members, including ABKD, 4O'clock habit, 4S Kontra
Dengue, and Use of Ovitrap. Despite the fact that program implementation statistics showed an
upward trend, this study was conducted in this environment. The Philippine Department of
Health is working to eradicate Dengue fever through its ABKD (Aksyon Barangay Kontra
Dengue) program. It's a multi-agency collaboration strategy. It is the government's response to
reducing Dengue cases and preventing Dengue transmission. The construction of an
Ovicidal/Larvicidal Trap system to trap Aedes mosquitos and act as an early warning signal in
the prevention of Dengue epidemics is one of the ABKD's primary goals.

By a joint memorandum of the Department of Interior and Local Government and the
Department of Health. The program is mandated to start at the Department of Health and works
its way down to the Barangay level. Each Barangay must strengthen clean-up activities, conduct
campaigns on the usage of OL traps to control and prevent Dengue outbreaks in collaboration
with the City or Municipal Health Office, and distribute the OL traps to the selected distribution
centers for free through the Barangay Health Team. The City or Municipal Health Office is also
required to provide Dengue preventive and control training and orientation, as well as money to
sustainably support the ABKD program. They also keep an eye on the health situation, offer
effective and prompt medical care to Dengue patients, and share data with Dengue case partner
agencies.

Purpose

With such, this study will focus on determining the perception of BSN students of Butuan
Doctor’s College regarding Dengue Prevention and Mitigation, including treatment, given that
this study will explore the role of nurses in such area.

Specifically, this study will determine the perception of BSN students of Butuan Doctors
College in the implementation of ABKD – a) Strategies , b) Management, c) Advocacy and
Research. The study will determine their perception on the 3 components of the Program.

Secondly, this study will cover and determine the perception the BSN students of Butuan
Doctor’s College towards their role in Dengue Prevention and Treatment, including their role in
the ABKD Program. This will direct towards the perception of the students as future nurses on
the impact and value of their role as health practitioners and frontliners in combatting tropical
diseases such as Dengue.

Importance

As such, this study will serve as a reference for the nursing industry, and nursing students
for future and extensive research on roles of Nurses in the prevention, management or treatment,
of Dengue in the country, especially of those nurses who are situated in places that have cases of
dengue.

Moreover, this study can and will serve as a source of input for medical practitioners,
health workers from the government, and the local and national government, for evaluation and
assessment of the progress of programs related to dengue prevention and management in the
Philippines

Finally, this study will benefit both the nursing profession in the Philippines, and nursing
students, as this this would gravitate their attention towards exploring their roles and significance
as medical frontliners in the never-ending battle against Dengue.
