- Madden, A Pocketful of Essays - Rhetorically Arranged Vol. One
Course Requirements:
• Two typed essays and One MLA Outline
• One 8-10 page argumentative research paper on a current
issue
• Writing and grammar assignments
• Participation in Discussion Boards and PackBack forums
Course Description:
This is a required general education core course in college level writing. Students will write
unified, coherent essays using various methods of development and review sentence and
paragraph structures and writing fundamentals. English Composition I is required for both the
Associate of Science (A.S.) and Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree programs. This course fulfills
the Gordon Rule requirement. 3 credits. Note: Must be completed with a grade of “C” or
better.

Gordon Rule Criteria for “college-level writing”
The writing will:
have a clearly defined central idea or thesis;
provide adequate support for that idea;
be organized clearly and logically;
utilize the conventions of standard edited American English; be
presented in a format appropriate to the assignment.
Writing assignments will be graded using a rubric based on these criteria.
Note: All Writing Assignments must be uploaded into a Turn-It-In drop box in LMS. If the
assignment is not uploaded correctly, then it will not be graded. Failure to complete Gordon Rule
writing assignments may result in being withdrawn from the class.
Course Competencies
Competency 1
The student will present writing which focuses attention on himself or herself (personal writing).
Competency 2
The student will present information in writing on a given subject (informational writing).
Competency 3
The student will demonstrate proficiency in using techniques that enhance reading skills.
Competency 4
Competency 5
The student will demonstrate proficiency in using research strategies. (Becoming familiar with the
campus library is assumed as part of this competency.)
Participation Policy:
Your engagement with the class will be measured by your participation and completion of class
activities. Students who do not participate in the LMS by posting and submitting work are
recommended to withdraw from the class or may be withdrawn from the class by the instructor.
If there are outstanding circumstances affecting your participation, please feel free to contact me and
discuss them. I will only allow make-up work if the student has an excusable absence.
Homework Policy:
No late homework will be accepted unless the student has discussed his/her situation with the
instructor prior to the due date. As this is a 6-Week course, it is imperative for students to complete
work on time.
Plagiarism:
Plagiarism is the intentional use of another person’s work as one’s own. It is academically
and intellectually dishonest and unacceptable in academia. Any student who plagiarizes an
assignment will receive a 1 for that assignment and may be subject to procedural due process.

Your final grade will be calculated as follows:
NOTE:
Discussion Posts are at least one-paragraph long with multi-sentence replies to two of your peers.
Podcast Reflections are a minimum of two paragraphs, one being a summary and the other
a critique.
