Effects of

the
Railroad
Checkpoint
The cities that were established due to the growth in the railroads were New York City,

Boston and St. Louis. They received the biggest benefit from the development of the

railroad. Though the cities of Boston and New York existed before the development of

the railroad they enjoyed the benefit of business booming and the financial wealth it

brought. This allowed more people to find jobs such as women who now entered the

workforce as well as African Americans who moved further north for opportunities. Most

of those new workers became factory workers that ran nonstop day and night in order to

make the products that would be shipped by railroad.

The social and economic changes that transpired from the growth of the railroad were

that a population explosion of about eleven million immigrants occurred. With the

expansion of the railroad the economy picked up for the south as well as easing the

strained relations with the north.

The changes were significant because it allowed a country that was ravaged and torn

by the war to be united once again as well as bring prosperity and industrialization to

the United States.
