Church Shooting
HSP3U
Usama Zulfiqar
2021-09-17
Details of the Incident
○ Mass shooting Perpetrated by a
white-supremacist neo-nazi Dylann
Roof
○ Killed 9 people and injured 1
○ Occurred at a Black Methodist church
with significance in South Carolinian
black history
○ Shooter’s intention was to start a race
war
○ Dylann Roof was sentenced to death in
2016
Anthropological Perspective
○ After a death row appeal in 2020, Dylann Roof’s lawyers claimed that
Roof was severely mentally ill
○ It was suggested that he could be on the autism spectrum, or possibly
schizophrenic
○ This perspective suggests that Dylann Roof’s experience with mental
illness led him to commit this crime.
Sociological Perspective
○ Dylann Roof’s upbringing was such that he was unable to make lasting
connections.
○ He turned to evangelical and neo-nazi groups for a sense of belonging
and companionship.
○ Additionally, Roof matched the image of a mass shooter (neo-nazi/white
nationalist, “lone wolf” type, white & male)
○ Dylann Roof’s interactions with certain groups and his own identity
may have caused him to commit this crime.
Most Plausible Perspective
○ Anthropological
○ Dylann Roof’s racism is the most significant contributing factor to
this tragedy.
○ Growing up in an unstable and racist environment, as well as being
radicalized online in his developmental years were, in my opinion,
the most significant factors that caused the Charleston church
shooting
○ However, psychological and sociological factors are definitely
important in this case and almost certainly contributed to Dylann
Roof’s actions
