STRENGTHENING OF
STEEL RESERVOIRS
 SOLUTION
Most cylindrical steel storage reservoirs are made of thin steel plates,
subject only to tensile stresses under working loads. However,
they have very low resistance to accidental loading.
Moreover, it is almost impossible to do any welding work to strengthen
these structures without interrupting operations, due to the thinness
of the plates.

Main strengthening needs:

 prevention in seismic areas;
 updating to new seismic standard;
 strong wind or shock wave due to a nearby explosion; Work area preparation:
 assembly of scaffolding and cladding
 change in use or stored materials;  removal of thermal insulation around the tank
 regulation of temperature and humidity
 loss of reservoir cross-section due to corrosion;
 geometrical defects in the reservoir.

Freyssinet proposes an innovative strengthening solution

(from design to construction) by lining with Carbon Fibre Fabrics
(TFC® patented process) and reanchorage of the reservoir to its support
by prestressing bars.

Advantages of this solution:

 work in risk areas without a fire permit;
 no welding on the reservoir membrane;
 possibility of adaptation to existing fittings without disassembling them
(sensors, branch connections, pipes, etc.) ;
 application of the strengthening solution on the full tank without
inconveniencing operations;
 fire protection (minimum M1 with intumescent paint).

TFC® properties:
 a thin and very compact material (the same system with thermal insulation
can be installed);
 TFC® is capable of high elongation and increases the stiffness of the structure;
 the applied composite material has exceptional durability and forms
a protective coating on the structure.
