    Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease caused by an interaction between genetic predisposing factors and environmental precipitating factors. SLE results from multiple immune system defects that cause the body to lose the ability to distinguish between self and non-self antigens. This leads to the abnormal production of autoantibodies and auto-reactive cells, as well as abnormal release of inflammatory cytokines.
