History of Gymnastics

Gymnastics is thought to have begun in ancient Greece about

2500 years ago where it was used in training to keep fit for
sporting activities. In the Greek city of Athens, gymnastic
tournaments were held, including tumbling, rope climbing, and
other similar activities. The gymnasium was the hub of cultural
activity.

Friedrich Ludwig Jahn was the father of gymnastics that found
the turnverein or also known as gymnastics club movement in
Germany. He was a devoted patriot who believed that physical
education was critical to national health and strength, as well as
character and national identity. He invented the parallel bars,
rings, balance beam, horse, and horizontal bar, all of which have
now become standard gymnastics equipment. He gained a large
following among both children and adults and started his first
gymnastics club in 1811.

History of Track and Field

Track and field are one of the oldest of sports. Athletic contests
were often held in conjunction with religious festivals, as with the
Olympic Games of ancient Greece. For 11 centuries, starting in
776 B.C., these affairs — for men only — were enormously
popular and prestigious events.

The first Olympic Games were held in 776 BC, when
Koroibos, a cook from Elis, won the stadium race, a 600-
foot-long footrace. For the first 13 Olympic festivals,
according to some literary traditions, this was the only
athletic event. Other evidence, both literary and
archaeological, suggests that the games may have existed
at Olympia much earlier than this date, perhaps as early
as the tenth or ninth century BC. A series of bronze tripods
have been found at Olympia, some of which appear to be
dated at about the ninth century BC, and it has also been
suggested that these tripods may in fact be prizes for
some of the early events at Olympia.
