A claim is supported by evidence, which can be debated or challenged.
However, opinion is a view or judgment that is not necessarily based on fact or
knowledge. . Remember that not all claims are created equal, and though a claim
may be arguable, the best claims are focused, specific, complex, and relevant.
This activity will give you an opportunity to review your past lesson and will
lead you to a new lesson.

What is it
In this part of module, you will develop thoughts or knowledge that will help
you understand better the discussion of the lesson. This ensures that you will
discover and understand new concepts and skills. Moreover, this section will provide
you more information about claims of fact, policy and value. It is expected that you
will be guided by the tasks or activities in assessing your knowledge.
1. Claims of Fact are grounded with factual evidence that is sufficient, reliable,
and appropriate. These are statements about how things were in the past, how
they are in the present, or how they will be in the future. Claims of fact also can
be factual or historical, relational or predictive.
Examples:
a) Teens who engage in unprotected sex will develop STDs, become
pregnant, and/or contract AIDS.
b) Cancer is a common disease but it is not contagious.
c) The Philippine Eagle is a critically endangered species.
d) Social distancing is important during the coronavirus pandemic.
Examples:
a) Homosexuality is immoral because it violates religious, societal, and
biological standards.
b) Requiring community service in high school will produce more
community-aware graduates.
c) Honesty is the best policy.
d) Monet’s art is more beautiful than Picasso’s because of its use of soft
color, uplifting subject matter, and unique technique.

Examples:
a) Uniforms should be required at all public high schools.
b) There should be criminal charges brought against people who use social
media to bully others.
c) We should stop spending so much on prisons and start spending more
on education.
d) Texting while driving should be an offense punishable by jail time.

B. Directions: Read the essay below. Formulate claims of fact, policy and value
based from the essay on the legalization of marijuana. Write your
answers on the graphic organizer.
Marijuana legalization has been a hot topic for last couple of years. Lately it
seems that drug policy and the war on drugs has been in the news quite a lot. Lot
of people believe that marijuana should be legalize and some people against
legalize marijuana believe marijuana should remain illegal. It is becoming obvious
that policies that United States take against marijuana coming to big question.
The marijuana question seems to be the most different of the drugs and issue that
are currently being addressed. New medical studies, approved marijuana by 23
states, and its consequences on those convicted from use of the most common
illicit drug in the world, is forcing the United States of America rethink its stance on
the matter. Twenty-three states have laws legalization marijuana in the United
States for medical use and Washington and Colorado first two states in US
legalized marijuana for recreational use. Many people believe that the usage of
marijuana is dangerous, but it can be exact opposite. The side effects of
marijuana are not much and studies proven that compare to other drugs like
cigarette and alcohol is less harmful.
