1.1 Introduction
This manual is intended to provide mechanical and electrical information for use in the planning and
design of an installation of the GEA 71B/C into an aircraft. This manual is not a substitute for an approved
airframe-specific maintenance manual, installation design drawing, or complete installation data package.
Attempting to install equipment by reference to this manual alone and without first planning or designing
an installation specific to your aircraft may compromise your safety and is not recommended. The content
of this manual assumes use by competent and qualified avionics engineering personnel and/or avionics
installation specialists using standard aviation maintenance practices in accordance with Title 14 of the
Code of Federal Regulations and other relevant accepted practices. This manual is not intended for use by
individuals who do not possess the competencies and abilities set forth above.

NOTE

1.2 Equipment Description

The GEA 71B/C (71BH, 71B Enhanced, 71BH Enhanced, and 71C), are micro-processor based
input/output Line Replaceable Units (LRUs) used to monitor sensor inputs and drive annunciator outputs
for airframe and engine systems.
The GEA 71B/C interfaces with various sensors on the aircraft and communicates airframe and engine
information via RS-485 digital interface to a GIA 64 Integrated Avionics Unit or directly to the Garmin
GDU Primary Flight Display (PFD) and Multi-Function Display (MFD). Typically, the MFD shows
engine instrumentation while the PFD shows airframe alerts provided by the unit. Engine/airframe
instrumentation is also displayed on the PFD and/or MFD while the system is in reversionary mode. The
PFD and MFD displays serve as the user interface for the units. All configuration settings are controlled via
software settings accessed by the MFD and PFD displays.
The GEA 71B/C uses a configuration module temperature sensor and a thermocouple sensor housed in a
backshell assembly to monitor backshell junction temperatures. This capability is only needed when
thermocouple engine temperature sensors are used.

1.6 Operation Instructions
The GEA 71B/C is a remote-mount LRU with no user controls or indicators. All user interface is
accomplished through a compatible display device. The GEA 71B/C converts sensor measurements to
digital data that is communicated to the display device. Loss of any of this data is communicated to the
pilot by system messages. Upon system power up, the absence of GEA 71B/C system messages indicate
that the GEA 71B/C is fully operational. There are no further GEA 71B/C specific operational procedures.
For GX000 installations, refer to the applicable airframe specific pilot documentation for instructions on
www.garmin.com.

2.2 Engine/Airframe Sensor Installation
Engine/airframe sensors to be used must be approved by Garmin. Follow the sensor manufacturer
recommended installation procedures. Wires routed too close to spark plugs, plug wires, or magnetos may
result in erratic readings. Ensure that EGT, CHT, and other sensor wires do not come in contact with
exhaust manifolds or any other extreme heat sources. Give proper attention to each sensor’s requirements
for polarity, voltage, wire type, and mounting.
2.3 Cabling and Wiring
See the interconnect examples in Appendix B for wire gauge guidance.
In some cases, a larger gauge wire such as AWG #18 or #20 may be needed for power connections. If using
AWG #18 barrel contacts, ensure that no two contacts are mounted directly adjacent to each other. This
minimizes the risk of contacts touching and shorting to adjacent pins and to ground.
Use wire and cable meeting the applicable aviation regulation. When routing wire and cable, observe the
following precautions:
• Keep wire and cable as short and direct as possible
• Avoid sharp bends
• Avoid routing near power sources (e.g. 400 Hz generators, trim motors, etc) or near power for
fluorescent lighting

2.4 HIRF/Lightning Protection and Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC)
In order to maintain HIRF/Lightning protection and Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) between
equipment, the electrical equipment, supporting brackets, and racks shall be electrically bonded to the
aircraft’s main structure. Refer to SAE ARP 1870 section 5 when surface preparation is required to achieve
electrical bond. Techniques used to provide electrical bond should be robust so that the electrical bond for
the installed equipment is repeatable. The electrical bond between equipment and local airframe structure
should achieve direct current (DC) resistance less than or equal to 2.5 milliohms (5.0 milliohms for ICA
maintenance intervals) from local structure to the equipment.
Compliance should be verified by measurement using a calibrated milliohm meter (that is capable of
accurately measuring the bonding requirement) or equivalent four wire method. Multi-meters are not
acceptable for making these measurements. There may be OEM-specific reasons for electrically isolating
equipment or having a higher bond resistance. These reasons should be rationalized upon installation
approval. In general, Garmin recommends that all Garmin Integrated Avionics System equipment be
electrically bonded.
The mounting allows the equipment to be electrically bonded, however additional bonding mechanisms
may be provided at the installation level with use of bonding straps or EMI fingerstock. The installation
design should be checked to verify that the electrical bond between the equipment being installed and
airframe is achieved. Remote equipment interfacing to the GEA 71B/C should also be electrically bonded,
unless there are OEM-specific reasons for electrically isolating the remote equipment.
Electrical bonding check must be made with the harness disconnected during the test so that the chassis
bond is not masked by the bond provided by the shielded harness. It is preferable to disconnect the
harness without removing the unit from the mount. Perform the following procedure if the unit is required
to be removed due to access constraints:
1. Remove the unit from the mount.
2. Disconnect the harness from the unit.
3. Install the unit to the mount.
4. Perform electrical bond measurement.
5. If electrical bond is acceptable then reconnect the harness/install the unit. No additional electrical
bond checks are required after it is re-installed with the harness connected. If the bond check was
unacceptable then improve or re-work the installation so that the bond check is compliant.
An equivalent OEM procedure may also be substituted for the above. An electrical bonding check may be
required on every installation or less frequently (e.g. every 5 aircraft), as determined by the OEM based on
their methods and control for implementing electrical bonds.

2.5 Cooling Requirements
The application of cooling air is dependent upon several factors specific to each aircraft installation.
Cooling air must be considered in the avionics/airframe integration design process, as system-cooling
requirements vary between different airframes. Thermal analysis must be performed to determine the
minimum cooling equipment set for any particular installation. Guidance can be found in the Thermal
Management Plan document (Garmin part number 190-00313-50) and the Thermal Validation Procedure
(Garmin part number 190-00313-51). Contact Garmin for additional cooling guidance.
2.6 Mounting Requirements
The GEA 71B/C mounting surface should be capable of providing a sufficient electrical bond to the
aircraft to minimize radiated EMI and provide protection from High-Intensity Radiation Fields (HIRF).
The GEA 71B and GEA 71B Enhanced can be mounted using the G1000 main system rack, or the unit
may be mounted remotely if desired. The GEA 71BH, GEA 71BH Enhanced, and GEA 71C may only be
mounted using a standalone mounting rack.
Refer to Appendix A for all installation drawings. The unit rack is fastened to the main system rack using
the nutplate kit listed in Section 2.1.2. Refer to the Figure A-1 GEA 71 Installation Drawing, for nutplate
placement locations.
The installer must provide any additional remote mounting equipment.

3 INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
3.1 Unpacking Unit
Carefully unpack the equipment and make a visual inspection of the unit for evidence of damage incurred
during shipment. If the unit is damaged, notify the carrier and file a claim. To justify a claim, save the
original shipping container and all packing materials. Do not return the unit to Garmin until the carrier has
authorized the claim. Retain the original shipping containers for storage. If the original containers are not
available, a separate cardboard container should be prepared that is large enough to accommodate
sufficient packing material to prevent movement.

3.2 Wiring Harness Installation
Allow adequate space for installation of cables and connectors. The installer shall supply and fabricate all
of the cables. All electrical connections are made through a single 78-pin high-density D subminiature
connector. Section 4 defines the electrical characteristics of all input and output signals. Required
connectors and associated hardware are supplied with the connector kit.
See Appendix B for examples of interconnect wiring diagrams. Construct the actual harness in accordance
with aircraft manufacturer authorized interconnect standards

CAUTION
Check wiring connections for errors before inserting the GEA 71B/C into the rack.
Incorrect wiring could cause internal component damage.

3.6 Post Installation Configuration and Checkout

NOTE
The GEA 71B/C will not provide valid outputs until the aircraft post installation
configuration procedures are completed.

The GEA 71B/C must be installed with a Garmin Integrated Flight Deck and have FAA approved
configuration data. Configuration data is loaded to the GEA 71B/C from an aircraft-specific SW Loader
Card. GEA settings are predetermined for a specific aircraft and are typically contained within the file
named ‘GEA1’. The PFD serves as the graphics user interface to the installer configuring the system. For
basic configuration information, refer to the G1000 System Maintenance Manual (LJ/VLJ Aircraft)
Garmin part number 190-00903-00 or the G1000 System Maintenance Manual (Standard Piston/
Turboprop) Garmin part number 190-00907-00. For actual aircraft installation/checkout, use only aircraft
manufacturer approved checkout procedures.

When an Analog Input is used to monitor a voltage with respect to ground, it is recommended to use
twisted pair with one wire connecting the monitored voltage between the HI pin of the Analog Input and
the sensor while the other wire connects between ground at or near the sensor and the LO pin of the Analog
Input. Differential wiring minimizes the error due to the interconnect. Grounding the LO pin at the GEA
can introduce errors due to the difference in ground potential between the sensor and the GEA. The cable
assembly should include shielded twisted pairs for each Analog Input Hi/Lo pair, and the shields should be
grounded at both ends of the cable.
All analog inputs are multi-purpose capable and have several configuration options. Table 4-5 summarizes
the configuration options.

In 1:1 mode, the minimum measurable voltage with respect to GEA 71B/C ground
Minimum is -1.7 V.
Measurable
Voltage In 1:33.3 mode, the minimum measurable voltage with respect to GEA 71B/C ground
is -3 V.

NOTE
If installing an ungrounded thermocouple to an Analog In input, a dc reference must be
added to the LO input. This can be accomplished by adding a resistance of 1 MΩ or less
between ground and the Analog In Lo input that the ungrounded thermocouple is installed
on.

NOTE
The Analog In set to 1:33.3 mode is capable of measuring a negative single-ended voltage
with respect to GEA ground down to -56 V. To achieve this, the single-ended sensor output
should be connected to the Analog In Lo pin and ground should be connected to the
Analog In Hi pin. The conversion parameters in GEA configuration allow for correcting
the inversion of the differential voltage reading.

4.4.6 Constant Current Source (CCS)

Table 4-11.Constant Current Source (CCS)

CCS Value Resistance Range

10.55 μA 0 to 236 kΩ
250 μA 0 to 10.0 kΩ
4.032 mA 0 to 620 Ω
10.04 mA 0 to 249 Ω

When the CCS is configured ON, the input of the LOW side must be spliced and connected to ground near
the GEA. It is recommended that the ground connection is made as close as pratical to the GEA to reduce
error due to voltage drop in the wiring. If not practical, near the sensor is acceptable.
For all Analog Inputs except Engine Temp Analog In 1, 4, 5, and 10 on the GEA 71B Enhanced
(011-03682-05) unit, each Analog In Hi pin with CCS is capable of suppling 10.55 μA, 250 μA, 4.032 mA,
or 10.04 mA that is used to measure resistive sensors. For Engine Temp Analog In 1 and 4 on the GEA 71B
Enhanced (011-03682-05) unit, the Hi pins are capable of suppling 250 µA and 4.032 mA. For Engine
Temp Analog In 5 and 10 on the GEA 71B Enhanced (011-03682-05) unit, the Hi pins are capable of
suppling 4.032 mA. When CCS is enabled, the voltage input range is -1.7 V to +2.5 V. For the resistance
range that each CCS setting is capable of reading refer to Table 4-11.
Use the CCS anytime a resistance is required to be measured. These sensors are typically RTDs, linear
transducers, and resistive fuel quantity systems.
The CCS circuit for the Engine Temp Analog In 1, 4, 5, and 10 on the GEA 71B Enhanced (011-0368205)
have higher impedance compared to other CCS circuits during transients induced by indirect effects of
lightning to support interface with resistive fuel quantity sensors in Part 23 and Part 27 installations.
4.4.7 High Side Current Monitor
The high side current monitor option of the Analog/Current Monitor Inputs are configured to monitor the
current draw of an aircraft power bus with the use of and external sense resistor. In high side current
monitor mode, the Analog/Current Monitor Inputs measure differential voltages in the -1.7 V to +2.5 V
range with a common mode voltage of +/- 80 V.

The GEA 71B/C provides 12 digital inputs. Any or all of these digital inputs may be configured as discrete
inputs if desired.
Each digital input may be configured as a frequency counter. The digital inputs can measure the frequency
of signals from 0.25 Vpp up to 150 Vpp and from 1 Hz to 100 kHz. Digital In* 7A and Digital In* 8A
cannot both be configured as a frequency counter input on the same unit.
For interfaces that require RTCA DO-160F Section 20 (Radiated Frequency Susceptibility) appliance
conducted category R or appliance radiated category R, the cable assembly should include shielded single
wires for each digital input, with the shield grounded at both ends. Unshielded wire can be used for
interfaces that require appliance conducted category T and appliance radiated category T or lower.

NOTE
It is recommended that shielded single conductors be used for interface with the Digital
Inputs when more than one Digital Inputs configured as a frequency counter is present in a
cable bundle. When unshielded wires are used with the Digital Inputs in the same cable
bundle, a Digital Input configured as a frequency counter and disconnected from a sensor
or without an AC signal on its interface can pick up the frequency of the signal on another
Digital Input interface in the same cable bundle.

The GEA 71C provides interfaces for up to 7 rotary variable transformers, linear variable transformers,
rotary variable differential transformers, and linear variable differential transformers, collectively known
as XVT.
Each interface consists of two excitation wires connected to the transformer primary and two to three sense
wires connected to the transformer secondary. For a four-wire interface, the IN A pin and a GEA ground
pin are connected across the secondary. The four-wire sensed position is proportional to the ratio of IN A
and the excitation output. For a five-wire interface, the IN A wire and IN B wire are connected at opposite
ends of the secondary, and a GEA ground pin is connected to the center tap of the secondary. The five-wire
sensed position is proportional to the difference between IN A and IN B divided by the sum of IN A and IN
B, i.e. (VA-VB)/ (VA+VB).
The XVT interfaces support configurable excitation frequencies of 400 Hz to 10 kHz and amplitudes of 1V
RMS to 7V RMS. The excitation outputs can each drive loads of 220 Ω or higher. There are only three
excitation outputs to seven inputs. Excitation outputs can be shared between XVT interfaces.
The XVT Inputs share pins with the Engine Temp Analog Inputs. When an XVT Input is used, the Engine
Temp Analog Input that share the same pins cannot be used on that unit.

The cable assembly should include shielded twisted cable for each XVT In channel, and the shield should
be grounded at both ends of the cable. The cable assembly should include shielded twisted cable for each
XVT Out channel, and the shield should be grounded at the unit end of the cable.
4.12 Fuel Quantity
Fuel quantity inputs can be directly interfaced to fuel quantity probes on Part 23 or Part 27 installations
only.
Capacitive fuel quantity probes have been tested on the following installations:
• Socata TBM 700
• Socata TBM 850
• Piper PA-46-500
• Pilatus PC-12
Testing is recommended to determine compatibility with capacitive fuel quantity probes prior to
installation on any other aircraft models.
The GEA 71B Enhanced (011-03682-05) provides up to 4 two-terminal (direct connection) capacitive fuel
quantity interfaces or up to 8 three-terminal (rectified connection) capacitive fuel quantity interfaces. The
fuel quantity interfaces measure capacitance between 8 pF and 1000 pF.
Each direct connection interface consists of an excitation wire (GEA output) and a return wire (GEA
input). Fuel Quantity Excitation 1 is used with FQ In 1 and FQ In 2. Fuel Quantity Excitation 2 is used with
FQ In 3 and FQ In 4. All of the capacitive fuel quantity probes in one tank can be connected in parallel to
one Fuel Quantity Excitation and one FQ In when the interface is the direct connection type.
Each rectified connection interface consists of an excitation wire (GEA output), a return wire (GEA input),
and a common wire (GEA ground). Fuel Quantity Excitation 1 is used with FQ In 1-4. Fuel Quantity
Excitation 2 is used with FQ In 5-8. Each capacitive fuel quantity probe required a dedicated FQ In pin
when the interface is the rectified connection type.
The Fuel Quantity Excitation outputs support configurable voltage levels of 1 V RMS to 7 V RMS. The
Fuel Quantity Excitation frequency should be set to 9.5 kHz for direct connection interfaces. The Fuel
Quantity Excitation frequency should be set to 20 kHz for rectified connection interfaces.
The cable assembly should include shielded single conductor wire for each Fuel Quantity Input and Fuel
Quantity Excitation, and the shield should be grounded at both ends of the cable.

4.13 Configurable Threshold Frequency Counter Inputs

The GEA 71B Enhanced (011-03682-05) provides 3 configurable threshold frequency counter inputs.
The configurable threshold frequency counter inputs can measure frequencies from 1 Hz to 1.5 kHz.
Turbine RPM In and Prop RPM In can measure the frequency of signals from 325 mVpp up to 15 Vpp.
The Fuel Flow In can measure the frequency of signals from 20 mVpp up to 325 mVpp. The minimum
voltage threshold can be set by configuration to prevent interference that is within the 1 Hz to 1.5 kHz band
from being reported by the inputs even when no desired signal is present.
The cable assembly should include shielded twisted cable for each configurable threshold frequency
counter input, and the shield should be grounded at both ends of the cable.
