CHAPTER I

Introduction

Choosing and dividing on something have consequences. The

results of what you have chosen can either help you but will hinder you in

the future. It is also the same with the course that you will have to decide.

In choosing the course, there are a lot of factors that the student must

consider.

Selecting a strand to be taken in Senior High is a crucial decision

for students; because their futures inclined with it. With the help of their

parents and peers also considering their financial status and chosen

careers, students come up a firm decision on what strand should they

take.

The researcher believed that by considering this aspect, it become

a assurance that they choice a right strand for their future. Parents play

significant role for their child in selecting a strand because of two reasons:

one is because they are the one who provide the financial for tuition fee

and other expenses for their child, second in because they can dictate or

influence their child on what strand should they take on. Same goes for
the peers, which they can influence the students strand decision making,

aside that they can’t dictate or provide the financial expense of students.

When students consider their financial status, they also considered their

financial capability that they have, and by this, they choose a strand that

suit on the range of their financial capability. Financial status has three

class: low class, middle class, and alite class. Since financial status of

most in public school are low and middle class, financial status further

categorized in low-lower class, low-upper class, middle-lower class and

middle-upper class. When students consider their self-choice, most of

them choose a strand that they dream of or a strand where they exile most

or the insured on(strand) where they future is secured.

A career choice is important because it determines your success in

the next stages of your life (PAMS, n. d). One of the tasks of high school

students is to explore and plan for their postsecondary career options.

High school students are at the exploration stage of career development.

Many factors career choice of high school students. According to Boyer

(1987), in taking a course, one of life’s major decision is being made. A lot

of time, money and effort will be involved. The shape and excellence of

the student’s life may rest on the result. According to Harris (1980),

decision making is the best way to get one’s satisfaction, and consider as

the best-required thing to do have a successful and a very satisfying life.

One decent decision that a person will do can make a huge impact in his

or her life. Decision making happens in people, and some are for their
future. This career choosing requires mature and severe discussion since

their choice will decide what their future will be.

Selecting a strand is a crucial phase to every student because of

the factors that needed to be considering before they arrive to a certain

career. Lots of author’s have revealed many factors that can affect

student’s decision making in selecting strand. Some of this factors are

environment, personality and opportunity factors ( Kaneez & Medha,

2018); psychological (interest, prestige, personality and self-esteem),

( peer groups, mentors, governmental policies and socio-economic status

of parents), economic (poverty, needs , demands and wants), hereditary

(physical appearance and aptitude) and educational factors( position of

students in school and acquired skills) ( Obiunu & Ebunu, 2010);sex,

average family monthly income, school preference, occupation of the head

of the family and average scholastic rating in the precending years

(Abarro, 2016); media financial constraints and academic performance

( Kazi & Akhlaq, 2017); personal factors , family factors, school factors

and career exploration factores ( Su et al., 20160); outcome

expectancies, gender, personal interest , learning experiences,

environment factors and personal contacts( Edward & Quinter, 2011). To

every student already face such financial problems like expenses that

exceed on their income receive, use saving to coop the financial

constraint, how to earn money and manage it to long last and make loan

to support the cost of living (Daud at al, 2018). The reason behind this

problem is the inability to manage well their (Jariah et al., 2004). In

additional, upon completing their selected course students’ will experience

the high level of satisfaction on their (Freeman et al., 2016).

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter presents the literature and study relevant to the

concept of the present study.

Presented in chapter II is a synthesis of research that the

evaluation of Academic Track included in chapter II is a historical overview

of Academic Track, what are the reason that lies on choosing Academic

Track, what are the factors of influencing the student in choosing an

Academic Track in Green Valley College Foundation Inc.- Maasim.

Historical Overview

The K-12 program offers a decongested 12-year program that gives

students sufficient time to master skills and absorb basic competencies

(K-12 Philippines, 2015). Selecting a strand is a crucial phase to every

student because of the factors that needed be considering before they

arrive to acertain career. Lots of authors have revealed many factors that

can affect student’s decision making in selecting strand. Some of this

factors are environment , personality and opportunity factors( Kaneez &

Medha,2018); psychological( interest,presige,personality and self-

esteem), sociological ( peer group, mentors, governmental policies and

socio-economic status od parents), economic ( poverty,needs,demands

and wants0, heredirity (physical appearance and aptitude)and education

factors( position of student in school and acquired skills)( Obiunu &

Ebunu, 2010); sex, average family monthly income , school preferences ,

occupation of the head of the family and average scholastic rating in the

preceding years( Abarro, 2016); mesia, financial constraints and academic

performance ( Kazi & Akhlaq 2017); personal factors, family factors,

school factors and career exploration factors ( Su et al. 2016); outcome

expectancies, gender ,personal interest , learning experiences,

environment factors and personal contact( Edward & Quinter 2011).

To every student this is the crucial phase in choosing a career.

Moreover, students already face such financial problems like expenses

that exceed on their income receive, use saving to coop the financial

constraint, how to earn money and manage it to long lats and make loan

to support the cost living( Daud et al.,2018). The reason behind this

problem is the inability to manage well their financial resources but despite

of this circumstance, they still able able to focus on their studies (Jariah et
al., 2004). In addition, upon completing their selected course student’s will

experience the high level of satisfaction on their (Freeman et al., 2016).

Factors influencing the students in choosing course

There are several factors that impact the students from high school

senior’s decision in what course they should take.

Ederlene C. Faelnar, Salve C. Cal and Gwelyne M. Albaracin, “

Strand Choice and Profile of the Senior High School Students of

Southwestern University Phinma”, this study sought to determine the

difference between strand choice and profile of the grade 12 senior high

school student. The study uses correlation design among 100

respondents.

Uncertainty is an unavoidable as well as career decision entailing

unexpected outcomes(1). Choosing a career is crucial especially among

students in the secondary or in middle school. In making decisions in

career selection, one has to undergo an intricate process and forcefully

open-minded person to choose his speciality, practice and location of the

education institution(2).

Related Review of Literature

A lot of factors must be considered in choosing a course. Gender is

a crucial factor among students in their choice of a course. Gender

distinguishes female students to be inclined to artistic related careers

while male students select scientific-related careers(14). Gender

differences exist in selection of specially medical courses(15)(16). On the

contrary, in choosing journalism traditional sex-role stereotypes as careers

become irrelevant (17). It does not make any variations of influence of

family members, peer, teacher ,and guidance counselor in the choice may

be depicted in cases like mother and daughter close relationship(13) while

developing and undeveloped countries, career decision making for college

is influence by parents particularly the father(16

Aside from gender, before entering college, socio-economic factors

and socializers determine career choice, the prestige of the course,

indication of well-playing job and bright future prospect , influence of

demand of job(20); personality(8). Personal interest and previous positive

clerical experience (21); job security, interest, less competition , less

hours of practice, less investment and influence by friends(22).

Remuneration is a paramount factor among accounting students to be in

the profession(23), but financial reward does not determine the choice of

career(21); socio academics, cultural factors and university including

entrance examination (24). Whereas, professionals preparation between

government and academic position are different (25). Thought, type of

occupation which require similar investment do but differ in income do not

necessarily influence the choice influence the choice of a student(26).

Academic and choice academic-related factors include, ability and

intellect determine career success among students (8) INTEREST (20)

particular learning style (14): curricular – extracurricular and one’s

experiences, income, career choice, status, work life equilibrium, labor

content, and hours of working,(16); adequate motivation, cognitive, and

metacognitive skills which meet job or family responsibilities shall prepare

students for science courses(27), and grade point average , advice from

other people, and orientation session attendance (21) . Among medical

students, the chosen career is relevant to the successful product of the

medical-educational institution, the program offered and characteristic of

medical student(28).

Decision-making, negative thinking and career difficulties indicate

undecidedness of a student’s(7). In order for student to make a better

decision , one can consider interest and intellectual ability(8); interest in

the subject , relationship with peers, members of the family and teacher,

and by assessment and research in the internet and other sources before

making the decision (29). Many students need career counseling for

choosing correct career path as clinical researcher or clinical

practitioner(30). The approach to supporting students willingness is a

potential influence(6).

In terms of personal qualities, low self-confidence in the classroom

implicates the behavior to be less motivate and do less effort while

adjusting their aspiration(31). Confidence evolves through experience in

students life and overconfidence is relevant to the good earning

expectation of an individual (32). Change of specialization is relevant with

traits like optimism, since of identity, work drive and career decidedness
together with extraversion, openness, emotional stability and

conscientiousness(Foster, 2013)

Foreign Literature

Heilbronner guaranteed that a great number of the students

manifested to proceed to stem courses in college , this is realized with the

quality, sufficiency of arrangement and educations in encounters of the

under studies.

According to another study done by Duffy and Sedlacek in 2007,

their survey from 1995 to 2004 revealed that men like to choose

professions which will focus on making money and females want to

choose profession which will focus on working with individuals and in

groups.

In European nation, sexual orientation is just a single of the

variables that influence accomplishment in different subject fields.

Financial status is an extremely solid factor; in this manner it is essential

to consider family foundation close by sexual orientation when supporting

kids who are under-accomplishing.

Local Literature

According to the Department of education ( DepEd ) , they have

funded and operated 5,965 public school offering Grade 11 in 2016 and

Grade 12 2017 . In additional to that ,there are also 4,830 private high

schools ,private and public universities and colleges ,technical-vocational

schools ,and philippine school overseas approved to offer the senior high

school Progam.

The financial issue was first brought up when K+12 curriculum was

implemented . To address address the problem, The Private Education

Assistant Committee (PEAC) has been contracted by the DepEdto

administer the Senior High School Voucher Program through DepEd

order No.010 s. 2019. This is a program of financial assistance eherein

subsides in a form of vouchers are provided to the qualified SHS learner in

participating non-DepEd public SHSs4 .

According to an article by Crus in 2015, by June 2016, Senior High

School (SHS) WILL BE MANDATORY FOR EVERY Filipino understudy

leaving Grade 10.. The general purpose of the whole K to 12 change is to

answer the necessities of around 30 million youngster who have not

competed fourth year high school. O f the out-of-school you (OSY) of

employable age, more than six million are jobless, principally in light of the

fact that they don’t have what it takes that business need. In our nation

that implies having the capacity to satisfy the College Readiness

Standards ordered by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).6

According to Uy in 2016, around 1.5 million students finished grade

10 for school year 2015-2016. In Philippines , but only 1,300,938 students

are currently attending the SHS program already surpassed the usual

rate of high school graduates entering college. Cebu City Schools

Superintendent, Dr, Bianito Dagatan believes that enrolment in public

schools decreased that can be attributed to the impression that public

schools lack of classrooms. Construction of school building meant to

accommodate students in Senior High School is still ongoing in many

schools in Cebu City. Dagatan.

In like way with investigation on factors influencing the education

and career choices of senior high school student revealed that parent’

supports, school structure, gender and grade point average have

considerable influence on the Vietnamese Senior High School Student’

Educational and career choice.
