1. The following observations were made when an oil engine is loaded with prony brake.
Speed of the engine = 1000 rpm. Load on the brake = 100 kg. Length of the brake 500 mm.
Estimate the brake power of the engine. If the mechanical efficiency is 80%, calculate the
indicated power.

2. A rope brake dynamometer, with 500 mm as diameter is used to load the engine. The
dead load on the brake is 200 N. Spring balance reading is 30 N. Rope diameter is 5 mm.
The engine makes 500 rpm. Find the brake power and brake thermal efficiency if 0.6
kg/hr of fuel with 44, 000 kJ/kg of heating value is used.

3. A four stroke single cylinder diesel engine runs with 1000 rpm has the following
specifications. Area of the indicator diagram = 500 mm², length of the indicator diagram =
70 mm. Spring scale reading = 0.5 bar/mm. Bore diameter = 120 mm. L/D = 1. Brake drum
diameter = 420 mm. Rope diameter = 7 mm. Dead weight on the weight hanger = 15 kg.
Spring balance reading = 20 N. Calculate the indicated mean effective pressure, indicated
power, brake power and mechanical efficiency.

4. A single cylinder two stroke SI engine working with a clearance volume of 2.7 litres. The
diameter and stroke length of the cylinder is 200 mm and 300 mm respectively. The flow
rate of fuel is 14 kg/hr having the calorific value 42,000 kJ/kg. The engine runs with 680
rpm and mean indicated effective pressure is 6 bar. Calculate the Indicated power,
indicated thermal efficiency, air standard efficiency and relative efficiency.

5. A twin cylinder four stroke CI engine has a cylinder bore of 125 mm and a stroke of 200
mm. 8 kg/hr of fuel with 43,000 kJ/kg of calorific value is supplied. The compression ratio
is 15 and cut off ratio is 1.8. Engine speed 1200rpm. The mean effective pressure is 7 bar.
Calculate the relative efficiency.

6. A single cylinder 4 stroke internal combustion engine operates with a speed of 300 rpm
consumes 2 kg/hr of fuel having calorific value of 42,225 kJ/kg. Flow of air is measured by
means of an orifice of diameter 20 mm fitted on to an air chamber. Coefficient of
discharge through the orifice is 0.62. Change in head in the manometer is 10 cm of water.
Determine the air fuel ratio, cylinder dimensions and thermal efficiencies if the
volumetric efficiency is 0.8. Take L/D ratio as 1 and mechanical efficiency as 80%. Density
of air is 1.16 kg/mᵌ pm = 9 bar.

7. A four cylinder 4 stroke SI engine has a compression ratio of 8 and a bore of 100 mm
with equal stroke. The volumetric efficiency of each cylinder is equal to 75%. The engine
operates at a speed of 4800 rpm, with an air fuel ratio of 15. The CV of fuel = 42 MJ/kg,
density of air 1.12 kg/mᵌ , mean effective pressure in the cylinder = 10 bar. Mechanical
efficiency = 80%. Determine the indicated thermal efficiency and brake power.
8. The power output of an I.C. engine is measured by a rope bark dynamometer. The
diameter of the brake pulley is 700 mm, arid rope diameter is 25 mm. The load on tight
side of the rope is 50 kg mass and the spring balance reads 50 N. The speed of engine is
900 rev/min consumes the fuel having the CV of 44,000 kJ/kg at a rate of 4 kg/hr.
Calculate brake specific fuel consumption and brake thermal efficiency.
