Write and balanced
chemical equations
BALANCING CHEMICAL EQUATIONS
•The following procedures demonstrates how to master
balancing equations by inspection using a step-by-step
approach.

Decomposition of water
•1. Identify the names of the reactants and the products,
and write a word equation.
water → hydrogen + oxygen

2. Write a formula equation by substituting correct

formulas for the names of the reactants and products.
H2O → H2 + O2 (not balanced)
(diatomic molecule)
3. Balance the formula equation according to the law of
conservation of mass. Count atoms to be sure that the
equation is balanced.
2 H2O → 2 H2 + O2
Reactant Product
H=2→ 4 H=2→ 4
O=1→ 2 O=2→ 2
Total 3 6 Total 4 6
•Learn to avoid the most common mistakes:
•1.Writing incorrect chemical formulas for
reactants or products.
•2. Trying to balance an equation by changing
subscript.
•Remember, that subscript cannot be added,
deleted, or changed.
•3. Do not leave out the final step of counting
atoms to be sure the equation is balanced.
Balance the given equation:

C2H5OH + 3 O2 → 2 CO2 + 3 H2O

Reactant Product
C=2→ 2 C=1→ 2
H=6→ 6 H=2→ 6
O= 3→ 7 O = 3 →7
Total= 11 15 Total= 6

Assimilation:
Which among the two can be
changed? 2H O → 2H + O
2 2 2
