THESIS THE MOMENT: THESIS STATEMENT IN THE MAKING

Read each statements carefully. Write FLEX if the given word or phrase is correct, but if
the statement is incorrect write KEBS. Answers should be written on the space provided.
Make sure that all answers are in uppercase format.

THESIS STATEMENT

According to Writing Center (2020), thesis statement tells the reader of the
interpretation of the writer in a certain Idea; it tells the reader the map or the whole
expectation of to the article. Thesis statement sums up the main point of the paper. It
usually contains a one or two sentences statement, and commonly a thesis statement
appears on the last part of the introduction. In most essays and research paper thesis
statement is a must to have, sometimes it is ought to answer the paper‘s research
question. (McComber, 2019)

IMPORTANCE OF A THESIS STATEMENT IN AN ACADEMIC PAPER

According to Mc Comber (2019), the thesis statement is one of the most important
sentences in your paper. Its functions include:
 Establish the purpose of the paper

 Stating the author‘s position about the topic

 Used as guide to the readers to understand the author‘s key points

 Keep the discussion focused due to the scope given on the thesis statement

TYPES OF THESIS STATEMENTS

1. ANALYTICAL
 It makes the persuasive arguments stronger, writer describe the key points by
means of analysis, evaluation, and interpretation of the topic
 Thesis statement unveil the key points through the writer‘s analysis and
introduce the drawn conclusion of the paper.

Example:
 The UK has always been hostile to the EU
 The history of the UK’s relationship to the EU is complicated; from the beginning,
Britain has been reluctant to fully integrate into Europe, both economically and
culturally, but the politics of EU membership has changed throughout the past 50
years

The first example makes a generalizing statement – it isn’t clear what will be
analyzed or why. The second example is much more specific, and guides the
reader through the historical analysis that your paper will undertake.

2. ARGUMENTATIVE
 Aims to persuade the readers about the topic.
 Should describe the claim specifically and concisely the author‘s side
 Clearly introduce the reasoning why did the author take a particular stand

Example:
 The Brexit referendum result was driven by political frustration.
 The Brexit referendum result was driven by working-class frustration with the
political elite, caused by austerity policies that have eroded public services and
fragmented communities; the referendum offered an alternative to the status quo.
The first example takes a position, but doesn’t tell the reader anything about how
you will build your argument. The second example condenses the key ideas and
evidence that you will use to convince your reader.

3. EXPOSITORY
 Aims to explain or discuss facts in a particular topic
 Thesis statement must elaborate the scope of the topic properly.

Example:
 Many demographic factors affected how people voted in the Brexit referendum.
 Polling and surveys shed light on the demographics of the Brexit vote, which can
be broken down in terms of age, ethnicity, region, and educational level.

The first example is vague and obvious. The second example clearly lays out the
sources and categories of information that your paper will explore.

STEPS IN WRITING A THESIS STATEMENT

Step 1: Formulate a research question


 Think of a question that the author would like to answer
 It will serve as guide to the entire discussion of the main points.

Step 2: Find sources and take a position


 Read various articles to gain enough information about the desired topic
 Make an outline on how to answer the given research question of the paper
 Arrange the evidences and facts according to the main point of the paper
 Make statements simple and brief, in outlining the process of discussion
 Facts should be legitimate and credible
 If the paper is argumentative, make sure that the evidence for the thesis
statement must affirm to the position of the author.
 Make a clear position and strong arguments before concluding the thesis
statement for the paper
Step 3: Support answer through reasoning and providing evidences
 This is a research process, as the writing of the paper develops, position might
change or vary as well. In some cases it happens so building-up of thesis
statement anchor on the evidences found during the research development.

EXAMPLES OF GOOD and BAD Thesis Statement


Here are six more thesis statement examples for you to consider:

1. Bad: Everyone should exercise.


 The statement is too broad. The term “everyone” addresses all people. Even
though the statement is simple the meaning or intention is not clearly
identified.
Good: Americans should add exercise to their daily morning routine because
it not only keeps their bodies at a healthy weight but also reduces the risk of
high blood pressure.
 Several specifications are present i.e. Americans (not everyone), the morning
routine (not the evening), weight maintenance, and high blood pressure
prevention. Research can be easier to understand if the objectives are clearly
specified.

2. Bad: High levels of alcohol consumption are bad for you.


 This is too broad. What are the specific detriments of alcohol consumption
that would like to discuss?
Good: High levels of alcohol consumption have detrimental effects on your
personal health, such as weight gain, heart disease, and liver complications.
 It provides specific objectives without unveiling every key points or ideas
about the paper. This shows that in writing a thesis statement the author may
provide the main areas that they would to explore.

Read each thesis statements carefully. Identify whether the said statement is a good or
bad thesis statement. If the thesis statement is GOOD write “Sa True!”, justify or explain
why do is it correct but if the statement is BAD write “Ekis mars!” and revise the given
statement.

1. Drinking too much alcohol is bad for your health.


2. Due to the pain and lifestyle change they are willing to undergo to save another life,
organ donors should be compensated with financial rewards.

3. Even though the grey wolf is a timid, gentle animal, it is being hunted and
exterminated because humans wrongfully think it is a fierce killer.

4. This paper will look at the advantages of school uniforms.

5. Saving the whales should be a top priority.

6. Fairy tales do not just make good bedtime stories. They also help explain the
psychology of children.

7. Parents deserve money for their sacrifices.

8. Using the internet has a positive effect on people.

9. When children are encouraged to read, they can build good habits that foster
comprehension skills, increase vocabulary, and expand their knowledge of new worlds.
