Student: Allison Nadler Professor: Maria Esposito

Course: EDU5230 03 Date: October 7th, 2021
Grade: 2nd Grade Topic: Compound Words Content Area: ELA

STANDARDS AND INDICATORS

2L4d: Use knowledge of the meaning of individual words to predict the meanings of compound
words. (Eg., birdhouse, lighthouse, housefly, bookshelf, notebook, bookmark)

Indicator: This will be evident when students create a graphic organizer and complete a
compound words quiz on Quizizz.

INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVE(S)

After a mini unit on compound words, students will be able to independently identify and form
compound words while taking a quiz on Quizizz with 75% accuracy.

PRIOR ACADEMIC KNOWLEDGE, CONCEPTIONS/MISCONCEPTIONS

Prior Academic Knowledge

Before a ELA lesson on what makes a compound word, students should have prior morphological
knowledge and how to create a graphic organizer .

Misconceptions

Some students may confuse compound words with verb phrases.

DEVELOPMENTAL PROCEDURES (*Engaging the learner)

1. MOTIVATION
The teacher will have compound words written on the SMARTboard. Students will
analyze the words listed, and participate in a think-pair-share. (What do you notice about
these words? What are the root words? Can the root words stand alone?) Students will
share what they notice about the words listed. [7 min]
2. Students will then brainstorm and create a KWL table. (What I know, What I want to
know, and what I learned). [10 min]

3. The teacher will transition into a class discussion about compound words (How can you identify
compound words? How can you figure out what they mean?) [5 min]
4. The teacher will label each half of a plastic egg with a word. Students will work with a
classmate to go on an “egg hunt” in the classroom. Students will have to find the two
halves that make one whole egg or one compound word . Students will then write a
sentence or draw a picture for the word they have. [12 min]
5. To close the lesson, students will go back to their seats and complete the compound word
quiz on Quizezz. [15 min]

ASSESSMENT (formal & informal)

Informal assessment

Think-pair-share, KWL Chart, Questions

Formal assessment

Students will be able to independently identify and form compound words while taking a quiz on
Quizizz with 75% accuracy

INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES

1. Cooperative Learning
Indicator: This will be evident when students participate in the “egg hunt” activity where they
will find two words that create a compound word with a classmate.
2. Discussion
Indicator: This will be evident when students participate in a think-pair-share with a classmate,
and when the teacher leads a class discussion.
3. Questioning
Indicator: This will be evident when students analyze and discuss the words shown on the
SMARTboard.
ADAPTATIONS

Students will have the opportunity to either write a sentence with the word they found on the “egg hunt”,
draw a picture, or do both. This will give each students the opportunity to illustrate what they found
based on their needs.

DIFFERENTIATION OF INSTRUCTION

Struggling students: Students will draw a picture of the compound word they found during the “egg
hunt”.
Average students: Students will create a sentence using the compound word they found during the “egg
hunt”.
Advanced students: Students will draw a picture and create as many sentences with the compound word
they found during the “egg hunt”.

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE

Following the lesson on compound words, students will create a graphic organizer where they will be
able to identify and define two words that were combined to make a compound word and use that
information to define the compound word. Teacher will provide feedback to students.

FOLLOW-UP ACTIVITIES:
DIRECT TEACHER INTERVENTION AND ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT

Direct Teacher Intervention

The student, under direct intervention with the teacher, will identify the different compound words used
in the story they read together.

Academic Enrichment

The students who have a complete understanding of the topic will write a story and underline the
compound words they used.
