ABSTRACT

Social media sites including Facebook are still gaining more

and more popularity today. Frequent use of Facebook leave

lasting effects on an individual’s mental well-being, including lower

self esteem. In order to test this hypothesis, 321 senior high

school students of AMA Computer College Biñan were surveyed

through questionnaires that will find their Facebook use intensity

and self esteem levels. The research was limited to senior high

schools that are users of Facebook. The results were recorded

and analyzed by applying Pearson Correlation Test to find if there

is a significant relationship between Facebook use and self

esteem. Findings show that there is very low correlation between

Facebook use and self esteem of the respondents. This does not

imply that Facebook use does not affect self esteem at all.

However, there might be other factors that affect Facebook use

relationship with self esteem.

CHAPTER V

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the summary of findings of the study,

conclusions drawn and recommendations suggested by the researchers.

The study aimed to explore if there is a correlation exists between

Facebook use and self esteem of senior high school students of AMA

Computer College Biñan.

Social media sites including Facebook are still gaining more and

more popularity today. This is true among the senior high school students

of AMA Computer College Biñan. The Theory of Self Esteem suggests

that there are many factors that affect self esteem. One of these is the use

of social media (Muqqadas, et al., 2017).

The relationship between social media use and self-esteem was

researched more in depth by utilizing two sections of the questionnaire:

The Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale in measuring the self-esteem of each

individual, and the Facebook Intensity Scale in measuring the intensity of

their Facebook use. The results of the questionnaire were compiled and

analyzed, using Pearson Correlation test to determine the correlation of

Facebook use to self esteem.

1. What is the self esteem levels of the participants?

The respondents agreed on “On the whole, I am satisfied with

myself,” with the highest mean of 3.14. Also, the respondents agreed

on “I wish I could have more respect for myself,” with the lowest mean

of 1.92. All in all, the respondents have a positive perception towards

their self esteem, having an average of 2.56.

2. What is the Facebook use intensity of the participants?

The respondents agreed on “Facebook is part of my everyday

activity,” having the highest mean of 3.03. Also, the respondents

agreed on “I feel out of touch when I haven’t logged onto Facebook for

a while,” having the lowest mean of 2.55. Overall, the respondents

agreed on questions about frequency of their facebook use, with a

general average of 2.79.

Majority of the respondents have over 1000 and above number of

Facebook friends, having the highest percentage of 57%, while only

6% of the respondents have a number of Facebook friends that is less

than a 100. On the other hand, most of the respondents spend 1-5

hours a day on Facebook, having the highest percentage of 46%,

while only 14% of the respondents say that they continuously use

Facebook throughout the day.

3. Is there a significant relationship between the participants’ use of

Facebook to the levels of self-esteem?

After a correlation test was applied, the value of the Pearson

correlation coefficient is 0.0328, with a p-value of 0.5582. This shows

that there is very low correlation between Facebook use and the self-

esteem levels of the respondents.

CONCLUSION

Based on the findings of this study, the following conclusions were

drawn:

1. There is very low significant relationship in the intensity of

Facebook use and the self-esteem of the senior high students of

AMA Binan.

2. Factors such as time spent or number of friends on Facebook

barely affect self esteem of students at all. However, this does not

imply that Facebook use has no effect on self esteem whatsoever.

3. There are other factors that might impact a students’ self-esteem.
