Discussion:
The scope of contemporary art is broad. There are over 100 art styles and movements under it. A
contemporary artist experiments with medium and form to make a statement. They employ collaborative
and interactive practices as well, which to a certain degree are gaining popularity.
Since the 1950s, artists have experimented on a variety of techniques and different ways of
expressing their emotions, perceptions, convictions, ideas, ideology and other things that could be

Characteristics of Contemporary Art

 Contemporary art is not confined to museums but can also be found in galleries, art
schools, side streets and public spaces like train or bus stations, shopping centers or
parks.
 Selling of contemporary at works becomes more accessible since artists post their
works online, but some only intend to display their works in a particular setting and
for a given span of time.
 Many contemporary artists are self- taught and did not have formal education. They
are more flexile in using different kinds of materials.
 Some contemporary artists employ the help of fabricators, carpenters, electricians or
welders in “constructing” their artworks.
 Originality is not an issue in contemporary art. An artist can get another artist’s work
and add to it, redesign or interpret it using other materials.
 What is essential to contemporary artists is the process of art making. It is the
experience, for example , of dipping one’s hands into a pail of paint and making
markings on a flat surface that matters to the contemporary artist.

Quiz 1

Discussion:
Contemporary artworks are expressions of freedom, experimentation and exploration of patterns,
figures, objects or a combination of many things that are important to the artist.
Subject matter in contemporary art is not confined to representations of human figures and
landscapes. The favorite subjects in contemporary art are children, women or the environment, such as
Juan Alcazaren’s Flora and Fauna (https://weekend.sunstar.com.ph/blog/2015/12/06/be-grand/resort-
bohol-the-resort-eperience-redefined/one-of-two-must-see-vertical-murals-at-be-grand-resort/). It can
also be a combination of any of these. If the artwork is an experiment on technique , the subject matter is
the technique itself. In other art forms, such as those in conceptual art, the viewer has to engage in
thinking and exploring the meaning of the artwork. Some artworks are intended to make a statement
about an issue so the viewer is guided by a written explanation.
In Plet Bolipata’s Cat Dolls (https://jackinetic.wordpress.com/2015/03/20/pasilyo/img_7323/),
the subject matter combines human figures and cat heads. The artist constructed a human skeleton made
of wires and covered it with textile. The cat head is made of resin. Several of these are found in front of
her house to serve as “guards”. Sam Penaso’s Labyrinth (https://altromondo.ph/artwork/labyrinth/) is an
abstraction using metal. This is an example of a contemporary art style.
There were art movements and styles that dominated contemporary art through the decades since
the 1950’s.
Art Movements/ Styles Description
Abstract Expressionism 1.Artist applies paint in a manner that
expresses
emotions and feelings in a spontaneous
way.
The figures may be heavy in lines and
color
without solid mass.
Kinetic Art 2. Artist designs a sculpture that may be
moved
by the wind or powered by a machine
or electricity.

Op Art 3. It uses lines or images repeatedly to
create an optical illusion.
Performance Art 4. It combines a variety of media and the
human body to execute an artistic theatrical
expression
performed before a live audience.
Environmental Art 5. It involves the artistic creation or
manipulation
of space such as landscape or
architectural design
that may enclose its audience.
Earthwork or art using stones, leaves,
trees, grass
or other natural elements is included in
this
category.

Feminist Art 6. It emerged from concerns of female

artists
expressed through art.
They tackle issues of identity, sexuality,
gender
roles, equality and the ways in which
the female
is treated in society, among others.
Minimalism 7. It has a stripped- down, prefabricated
look that is
free of details and often with flat
surface, but
expresses a specific content or
statement.
Video Art 8. It consists of images that are recorded
on video and viewed through a
television, computer or
projection screen.
Graffiti Art 9. It is a drawing, inscription or sketch
done hastily
on a wall or other surface made to be

the public.
Postmodern Art 10. It carries modern styles to extreme
practices often expressing an
idea through a mix of
materials such as found objects

Some art styles progress through the decades and have influenced artists throughout the globe, while
some are short- lived and are confined to a group or locality. As such, some styles cannot be confined to
one particular decade.
Below is a list of some of the art movements and styles grouped by the decades they are known to have
flourished.

art installation

In contemporary art in the Philippines, there is a dominance of abstraction, expressionism, social

realism and mixed media art. Traces of western influence are visible in two- dimensional abstract
paintings. Recently, community
and environmental arts are gaining popularity. When there is public space that can be used by artists,
they collaborate in art- making and conduct workshops to teach and involve the children or specific
groups in the community.
Interactive art-making is also practiced among Filipino artists. In some cases, visual art is
combined with performance art to make a statement or express an idea about an issue. Film has
expanded to include independent or “indie” films that explore specific themes. Theater performances are
no longer confined to the theater stage. They can be performed at the streets with minimal props. In
music, there is a fusion of different styles and lyrics are sung in irregular sound patterns.
Although the trend in contemporary art is one of explorative use of new materials aided by
technology, its content does not leave out human elements, concerns, issues and things of high value to
human beings.

Discussion:
Every art- making process is dictated by the artist’s style. Style has many meanings. It can mean
the art produced in a particular historical period. It can also refer to the art of a nation or a region within
a country. The growth of a single artist’s way of working can be referred to as “ the evolution of style”
The significance of style lies in the fact that it allows the viewer to discern the meaning behind
the subject matter and purpose of the painting.
Contemporary painting is made in man styles at one time throughout the globe. For this reason,
we cannot refer to style as the art produced in a particular historical period. Neither can we refer to it as
the art of a nation or region.
We describe the stylistic tendencies that are manifested in an artwork. Stylistic changes are
apparent in stylistic tendencies, which are attributed to the creative inventions of artists working at
certain times and in specific places.
There are four styles that are based on stylistic tendencies: objective accuracy, formal order,
emotion and fantasy.

The Style of Objective Accuracy:

Many contemporary artists face the problem of creating an impression of reality through a
selective use of visual facts. Artists imitate appearance to convey moving, drama about human life.
Sometimes, artists combine their representational skills to create a psychological impact. In their desire
to do so, the representation becomes an interpretation of reality which does not necessarily have
objective accuracy.
In objective accuracy, the artist can do art by being a detached observer or by employing a
selective eye.

Classification Description Example

The Artist as a Detached The artwork seems to have Cebu artist Jose Marie Picornell

Devices for Objective Accuracy

How does one achieve objective accuracy? It is through correct drawing, control, focus, color and
perspective.
Correct Drawing
 Correct drawing is the most common device.
 It takes mastery acquired through formal studies and serious practice to make
beautiful artworks.
 Learning how to draw accurately teaches the artist to see and to understand what he or
she is looking at.
 He or she must learn to distinguish between imitation of surfaces and informed
representation.
Example:
 In Marvin Natural’s Remembering Past Mistakes
(https://yicca.org/en/view/community_artwork/marvin-chito-
natural/2013-/remembering-past-mistakes/0), the artist shows the human figure in
correct proportion.
 As seen in the complexion , the tensed muscles that exposed the shape of the bone
structure and slightly bent shoulders of the main figure, the viewer can tell that he is
an elderly person.
 The clothing appears soft yet loose and oversized for the person.
 If we look closely, we notice that the shadow does not go to the same direction of the
person but the opposite.
 The title gives us a hint about the meaning that the painting conveys: that man should
move on and leave his past mistakes behind, otherwise, suffer the consequences.
Control
 The artist’s control and handling of illumination help in creating realistic images.

HRC Contemporary Arts – First Semester

 The amount of light an object receives, the shape of its shadows, the transition from
light to shadow, the source of light- these are things that the artist learns to observe
and control in the medium that he or she uses.
Example:
 Jericho Vamenta exhibits skillful control of illumination as seen in his Katuparan ng
Hiling ni Elena (https://altromondo.ph/atwork/katuparan-ng-hiling-ni-elena/), done in
sgrafitto technique. Sgrafitto is produced by applying layers of plaster tinted in
contrasting colors to a moistened surface. In this case, oil pastel and oil are applied on
a piece of board.
 Mastery of technique and control and handling of light are manifested in the complex
folds of the draperies that make the human figures appear bigger.
 Light is distributed throughout the pictorial frame without concealing the features of
the main figure, a lady who seems to be sitting in dreamland.
 The male figure behind her appears to be silent but possesses an imposing presence
that seems to say that he has power over the lady.
Focus
 Focus is achieved through sharpness or softness, distinctness at the periphery of our
field of vision- becomes a device for controlling the spectator’s visual experience.
The eye is drawn to the most distinctly represented form, other things being equal “
 “The rather elementary fact about optics – that objects lose distinctness at the
periphery of our field of vision- becomes a device for controlling the spectator’s
visual experience. The eye is drawn to the most distinctly represented form, other
things being equal “ ( Feldman 1981, 160)
Example:
 In Santiago Bose’s Carnivores of Session Road
(https://wordsmithwoman.wordpress.com/2013/8/22/eyes -of-gauze-the-trails-and-
mists-of-santiago-boses-viion/), we see several elements in the pictorial frame : a
collage of buildings, human beings, Mc Donald’s mascot, cars and trees in the
background- all in black and white.
 The most prominent are the human figures painted in brown, which renders the
background dull. This was intentionally done by the artist to lead the viewer’s focus
on the natives of the mountain province whose faces are distorted as if to play the role
of jesters while carrying Colonel Sanders of Kentucky Fried Chicken.
Color
 Color is a powerful instrument. It is mainly connected with the description of the
objects.
 The color of the objects varies depending on the amount and source of light they
receive and on their location in space.
Examples:
 Color is rich in Imelda Cajipe Endaya’s Panimula
(http://www.positivelyfilipino.com/magazine/presents-from-the-past). The dominance
of blue , which represents water, is disturbed by the red colors which represent anger
between the forces.
 Colors are also used to form brown and white lights that cover the entire frame.
 The human being on the right side is in its natural color, brown.
 Dennis Montera, in his Obra et Labora, used blue as the background color that goes
lighter from left to the right side of the horizontal canvas.
 The black doodle- like lines seem to be letters that spell out a word hastily written on
shades of white paint.
 The black lines are heavy and thick but go lighter as they approach the right side of
the frame.
Perspective
 Perspective is the pictorial device that relates to the artist’s ability to create the
illusion of deep space within the painting.
HRC Contemporary Arts – First Semester

 The technical features of linear and aerial perspective – the perspective of shadows
and reflections, of receding measured forms, of advancing and foreshortened forms,
of single- and two-point system, of the interaction of perspective with color and
illumination are exceedingly complex.
Examples:
 In Palmy Pe-Tudtud’s Mga Pangandoy
(https://www.pressreader.com/philippines/sunstar-
cebu/20150331/281505044722046), we see cranes- the large, long legged and long-
necked birds flying toward one direction: the human heart.
 The human body appears in the background which is defined with a black outline.
 Life is indicated by the tongues of fire rendered in red with some shades of white.
 The most prominent in the painting are the cranes flying toward the heart as if it were
their home.
 Palmy Pe Tudtud showed perspective by making the cranes near the viewer bigger
and as they go farther they appear to be smaller. This creates depth and an illusion of
space. In effect, they seem to be flying around a wider space although in reality, the
only space available is the height and width of the canvas.

Discussion: The Style of Formal Order
Day 18 -online class
Discussion: Art Appreciation
Day 19 -asynchronous
Interpretation of Covid in drawing
Day 20 -asynchronous

Discussion:
The Style of Formal Order
Formal order in contemporary art is associated with stability and permanence. Formal order is
exhibited
by its qualities: intellectual order, biomorphic order and aesthetic order
As intellectual order is clearly applied to painting, the discussion and example are provided here.
This style is visible in cubism where an intellectual method of analyzing forms is employed by the
painter. The artist presents an arrangement of geometric forms. We have seen this style in the works of
western painters Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. ( Their paintings will be shown to students)
Romeo Gutierrez’s Rich Fulfillment He uses triadic colors: blue, green and orange to
yellow. The blue colors intertwine with yellow
hues and some white. These colors are not
arbitrarily placed on the canvas but are the result
of a careful study of the subject matter and how it
can be broken into parts without creating a
chaotic image. The arrangement of geometric
forms follows the cubist tradition.

The Style of Emotion

Themes of emotion, feeling and romance are common features in painting. Romanticism and
emotion are used in painting when the artist wishes to disclose personal feelings in relation to love.
Anxiety and despair in painting express disappointment, bitterness, disturbance or uncomfortable
feelings and often look dark and chaotic. Joy and celebration are displayed through vigorous,
uncomplicated approach such as depiction of movement and energy with the visual representation of the
HRC Contemporary Arts – First Semester

sun, sky, air, water and mountains. Brushstrokes are also used to express sparkle, freshness and
abundance.
The Style of Fantasy
The artist creates strange forms or allows himself or herself to experience a creative process that
leads to fantastic outputs. Because fantastic art originates in both logical and irrational mental processes,
it presents no common set of visual qualities. Fantastic works may be objectively accurate or
subjectively distorted. We can speak of fantastic style, then, only because certain works exhibit a logic
based on dreams, utopian hopes and speculative vision and can be based on myth, fairy tales, folk
stories, magic, hybrid man- animal creatures, etc. “Fantastic art thus manipulates illusion and reality”
Illusionism is used in contemporary art to create fantastic images or substitute real objects for the
illusionistic treatment of reality. The representation may be surrealistic, mechanical- biological, quasi-
cubist or reassembling parts of an automobile to create a context or meaning. Minimal craftmanship is
required but planning where to put and what to achieve in the creative design depends on the
imagination of the artist.
Abdulmari Imao’s Sarianok It is an example of art that draws inspiration from
the fantastic, specifically the legendary bird of the
Maranao people of Mindanao. The Maranao
consider the sarimanok as a symbol of good
fortune, , a creature tasked by the gods to be their
messenger. In some myth variations, the
sarimanok is even thought to be a mythical lover
of a datu’s beautiful daughter. The bird is often
depicted with its wings adorned in bright colors-
from its wings to its feathered tail- and usually
carries spiral motifs in its body.

Art Appreciation
There are three elements that constitute appreciation of contemporary art: analysis and
interpretation. In description , you discuss the subject, material and art elements and principles. In
analysis you focus on the style of the painter as seen in the painting, particularly in its design qualities
and value to the viewer. This is also where you determine what the features suggest and decide why the
painters used these to convey specific ideas. In interpretation, focus is on the expressive qualities, the
meaning, theme, mood or idea communicated by the painter. This can lead you to make a judgement on
the beauty of the painting.
( Show the painting of Yolanda of Pierre Patricio)

Artist’s Statement
“The wreckage typhoon Yolanda has demonstrated how the forces of nature are capable of
unleashing their most destructive elements if not handled with proper care and respect. This painting
depicts Mother Nature as a woman of sensitivities amidst the tragedy, highlighting her role to humanity
as the giver of life and cause of death and the source of all beauty as well as destruction in the universe.
She is accompanied by the legendary sarimanok, seemingly startled by the strong winds and a pair of
arowanas symbolizing strength and territoriality. The woman’s innocent glimpse is a constant reminder
that nature at is finest will always be a beauty to reckon with when not abused”

Description
The Subject Matter
 What is the main figure in the artwork?
 How do the other figures in the artwork relate to the main figure?
The main figure is a female face surrounded by things found in the environment: fish and leaves,
water and air. The artist combined these with the legendary sarimanok and wind, as suggested by
the wavy colored shapes. The figure does not represent man amidst nature. Rather , it is Mother
Nature amidst God’s creation.
The Materials
 What are the materials or medium used by the artist?
HRC Contemporary Arts – First Semester

 Does this medium bring out the intended effect of the artist?
The artist used acrylic paints on concrete, textured wall. The concrete wall gives the painting
good rough texture that best expresses the tragedy and destruction that typhoon Yolanda brought
to the southern part of the Philippines. If the artist used a smooth canvas, the message would not
have come across effectively.
The Art Elements and Principles
 What are the dominant elements in the artwork?
 How are these used in the artwork?
 How does the artist use lines to define shape and volume?
 What are the unifying features in the composition?
 What variations appear among repeated elements?
Curved lines dominate the painting that has different hues of the primary colors: red, yellow and
blue. Blue connects the different elements around the human face with eyes closed as if in fear to
witness the disturbance brought by nature. The fowl feathers and leaves surround the face like
hair. Above the living creatures that occupy the middle through the bottom part of the painting is
a dying tree that brings the blue hue to meet with the brown brick wall. The objects are unified
by the curved lines that flow from top to bottom of the frame. The strong orange moon near the
sarimanok breaks the monotony of blue.
Analysis
Elements
 Determine the subject matter by naming events or issues associated with the painting.
 Discuss how the qualities of the artwork contribute to its appearance , image or
function.
 Describe the effect of the materials/ medium used
 Give your reaction to the painting.
Questions:
 How did the artist make the painting?
 Is it a good painting?
 Do you like/ dislike the painting? Why?
 How does it compare with other paintings?
 What is the value of the painting to you, the youth or society?
Typhoon Yolanda, known internationally as “Haiyan” was one of the strongest tropical cyclone
and the strongest storm ever recorded. It devastated the southern part of the Philippines on Nov.
7, 2013. It left 6,300 people dead and caused catastrophic destruction in the Visayas, particularly
in Samar, Leyte, Cebu, Capiz, Negros and Iloilo affecting 11 million people, most of them
homeless after the storm.
This tragedy has inspired artists to use their art to express pain and suffering. Capiz artist,
Pierre Patricio, is one of them. The figure in his painting is a symbol of Mother Nature that
appears calm and harmless but destructive when her power is unleashed. Other elements in the
painting , such as the legendary sarimanok and arowanas are used to symbolize the strength to
survive. The flowing curved lines gently connect all the elements of nature that are under threat,
which is symbolized by the dead tree.
The artist combined forms in abstraction, with the curved lines that move from bottom to
the topmost area of the frame as the unifying element. This is characteristic of Pierre Patricio’s
style, where the elements of design are intellectually interpreted through analysis of forms,
making them transparent as they overlap. This style observes the formal intellectual order.

Interpretation
Elements
 Main idea and the overall message of the painting
 Interpretative statement; “ Can I express what I think the painting is about in ne
sentence”
 The evidence inside or outside the painting that supports your interpretation.
Questions
HRC Contemporary Arts – First Semester

 What is the painting about?
 What is it intending to communicate?
 What statement is the artist putting forward through the painting?
 Are there objects that symbolize something within the artistic frame? What are these?
 What is the meaning of the painting?
The painting is about the power of Mother Nature. It can be beautiful, as well as cruel. It
can give life as well as take it. This is seen in the colorful plants , fish, sarimanok, in
contrast to the dead tree placed on the top part of the painting. This painting serves as a
reminder of man’s weakness compared to the strength of Mother Nature.
He employed a selective eye and focused on elements that the eye should see to be able
to reflect on the tragic effects of the super typhoon. Although he contrasted living
creatures with the dead tree that may connote hopelessness, the color that occupies most
of the vertical frame symbolizes lie and hope.
It is a good artwork in the sense that it made creative use of the elements of painting and
principles of organization. It has elements with symbolism that the Filipinos recognize.
Beyond form, its content pierces into the heart of the Filipinos who have been victims of
the catastrophe and who have lost their loved ones and property in just one day.

Discussion:
Sculpture is an art form that requires the artist’s creative use of balance, skill in the use of
materials and physical strength. For many centuries, the common subject matter was the human figure,
with materials limited to marble, metal and wood. This has changed in contemporary sculpture where
new materials and technology have given the sculptor more choices and flexibility in art- making.
Sculptural processes are done in ways most suitable to the available material. Stone can only be carved,
drilled, abraded and polished. Wood lends itself to the same processes more easily although modern
technology permits it to be permanently bent and molded. Wood is appealing for its grain, color and
origin in a living tree. The disadvantages of wood lie in its dimensional instability- its tendency to warp
or crack, especially when wet.
Another medium that can be used for sculpture making is metal, which can be modified in
various ways for its to take the artist’s desired form.
More recently, powdered metal is combined with plastic binders so that it can be modeled and
assembled by welding, soldering and riveting or with adhesives. Bronze has beautiful surface and color
characteristics and is the most common casting material. Some sculptures are done in wax. It is not very

permanent and can easily be changed or damaged in handling. It can also be deformed when exposed to
heat.
Terra-cotta or clay is more responsive than wood or stone. However, It possesses little strength
in tension or compression and requires an armature for support. Clay is not in itself a permanent
material. If fired, it is subject to the size limitations of a kiln and a variety of engineering considerations.
Resin is becoming poplar in the Philippines. It is used by any installation artists and sculptors.

The Four Basic Sculpture Techniques

Sculpture process can be either subtractive, where the material is removed or carved out until the desired
form is visible or additive, wherein the material is added part by part until the form is completed.
Sculptors use four basic techniques: modeling, carving, casting and assembling.

Discussion
Styles and Movements in Sculpture
Technology, modern tools and materials generate new artistic ideas and sculptural effects that have
developed into different styles and movements. We now describe the more common art styles and
movement in sculpture.
Monolithic Sculpture
 It is carved from a slab of stone and is limited by the material’s shape and size. This
means that the sculptor can only make a form that is allowed by the material’s shape
and cannot exceed its size.
 Neither can the sculptor produce complex open forms and shapes where arms and legs
are stretched.
 The form is taken as one whole closed form or shape.
Example
 In Lucell Larawan’s Prostrate
(https://www.thenewstday.info/2009/04/16/blossoms.from.eternal.spring.html), he
embedded thousands of nails on wood and painted the form with acrylic.
Constructivism
 I is popular among contemporary artists.
 It makes use of new materials such as plastics, plexiglass, metal wires, etc. and allows
a break from the figurative representation of sculpture.
 The main traits of constructivism applied to sculpture are abstraction, transparency,
interpenetration of sculptural form, overlapping of planes and the employment of
lines in tension to describe direction and movement.
Example
 Wilson Baldemor’s Vise Tandem is done in bronze and aluminum. According to
Baldemor, ”My Infinity-inspired sculptures signifies eternity, loyalty, truth and
soulful attachment between the viewer and object. Visually appreciated in complex
forms and dimensions, my sculptures transpire a man’s artistic desire for solemnity
over its value.
Sculptural Assemblage
 It provides a method to the contemporary artist who abandons carving, modeling and
casting
 Several forms of found objects, including “metal(wire, pipe, sheet, rod, spring, tube,
bar and plate) are put together through a single method of attachment; welding and a
single color and surface texture. Thus, the sculptor is free to deal with problems of
volume and contour, movement and balance, illusions and reality.

HRC Contemporary Arts – First Semester

Example
 In Michelle Hollanes Lua’s Broke Bag Mounted
(https://jennysserendipity.com/2015/12/11/michelle-hollanes-lua-scaveger-artist-
sculptor/)
She created a variety of texture by putting together pieces of aluminum, brass, stones
and diamonds collected from hundreds of broken shoes, belts and bags, covering the
inner layer of a fiber glass cast.
Kinetic Sculpture
 It is a sculpture in mechanical motion.
 When they are suspended in the air, they can produce musical sound as the elements
move with
The wind and touch each other.
 Strong wind can also propel movement in a sculpture.
Examples
 Impy Pilapil’s interactive kinetic sculptures such as Rainbow Rings, Nautilus, and
Nature’s Embrace (http://www.impypilapil.com/Interactive/interactive_main.htm)
are made of bamboo, plastic, and other light materials. They are constructed vertically
to interact with the wind and are designed to accommodate the movement of the
viewers who interact with the kinetic sculptures.
 Gabby Barredo’s sculptures (https://www.youtube.com/wtch?v=QsUfhj45Gck) are
set into motion by machine and generators that enable the objects to move up and
down or left to right while producing sound. He uses rods of electric fan covers,
broken particles of car windshields, wood, paper, wrought iron, antique radios,
coconut husks, bottle caps, bed springs, fire-hose coils, conveyor belts, wooden beads,
computer and refrigerator parts and cement grinder that serve as elements of the
sculptural form.
Niche
 It is a recessed place in a wall where a sculptured figure or bust can be located.
 It is important to think of niche sculptures as “born from” walls, conceived out of
necessity to endow plane surfaces with dramatic meaning.
 The niche encloses forms physically and governs the angle of vision from which the
sculpture can be seen. Psychologically, the sculpture is protected by its enclosure; it is
removed from full exposure to the elements and can thus be perceived as something
which requires shelter.
Example

 In Renato Habulan’s Takatak Series3s 1, 2, 3 and 4 (http://www.tin-

aw.com/exhibit/91), he used scapulars buried in wax. Underneath is a figure of a head
and a hand, followed by crown of thorns surrounded by flowers. In the last panel are
roses submerged in wax. One Takatak box shows hints of devotion to the Virgin Mary
with pastel-colored flowers and scapular. Gayuma bottles are formed in the third
Takatak panel. His Takatak seres highlights people’s state of mind, the person’s
“loob”, in relation to the combined beliefs in society.

Box

 It is closed and can become a package, a portable container for something worth
keeping.
 It is distinguished by its careful craftsmanship and connection to something.

Discussion
Architecture is in the fields of science and art. As a science, technology techniques,
architectonics, engineering and tectonics are applied. As an art, the structure is designed creatively,
which is determined by its function and purpose, the space that it will occupy, and the people who will
occupy it.
Contemporary architecture relates itself to environment planning, city planning, space planning,
landscape architecture, interior design and urban design.
The elements of art and principles of design or organization also apply to architecture. We add
two more elements: size and scale
Elements and Principles Description
Size Relates the structure and its parts to the human
beings who occupy the space
Scale Relates to the proportion of an object or space to
all the other objects in it and also to the human
beings and their activities held in the structure
Emphasis Major and subordinate elements are determined in
the structural design.
Patter and ornament Give artistic surfaces designed by the structural
limits, edges and corners.
Architectural Materials
The classic materials used in architecture are wood, stone and brick. Modern materials include cast iron,
structural steel and reinforced concrete.
Materials Description
Cast iron It sets the stage for steel-skeleton construction in
architecture.
Steel manufacture and fabrication This technology advanced the architecture
through tubular, extruded and corrugated steel
products.
Reinforced concrete or ferroconcrete It is vastly more efficient than stone masonry piers
and archers.
It has the virtues of steel and stone without their
disadvantages.
Structural devices These are employed to enclose space in
architecture
- Post-and-lintel: the most ancient of
construction devices and still enjoys wide
use today; consists of two vertical supports

bridged by a horizontal beam.
- Cantilever: the horizontal extension of a
beam or a slab into space beyond its
supporting post; relies on the resistance of
breaking of its material and the secure
fastening of its internal end.
- Truss system: an application of the
geometric fact that no angle of triangle can
be changed without altering the
dimensions of the sides; a system of
triangles arranged to work like a beam or
lintel.
- Arch: used to support bridges and viaducts
and in association with large domical and
vaulted structures.
- Vault: a succession of identical arches in
file order, one behind the other.
- Dome: its placement on a cylindrical drum
over a circular foundation is logical from
the standpoint of geometry and
construction, but most dome structures rest
on rectangular foundations.

Style in Contemporary Architecture

Contemporary architecture is defined broadly as the building style of the present day. However,
examples do not necessarily have similar or easily recognizable features because the “style” is really
quite varied and has a number of different influences. Even though a precise definition of the “style” is
difficult to articulate, contemporary homes typically include an irregular or unusually shaped frame, an
open floor plan, oversized windows and the use of “green” and repurposed components. Such homes
also often have an organic design, fitting into the surrounding space and meeting an immediate need in
the area.
(Showing of home-buddies PPT)
Art Appreciation
There are 3 elements that constitute appreciation of contemporary art: description, analysis and
interpretation.
In description, you discuss the subject matter, materials and art form.
In analysis, you focus on the style of the architect as seen in the artwork, particularly in its design
qualities and value to the viewer. This is also where you determine what the features suggest and decide
why the architect used these to convey specific ideas.
In interpretation, focus is on the expressive qualities, the meaning, theme, mood or idea communicated
by the architect and then you can make a judgement on the beauty of the architecture.
(PPT Presentation of Coconut Palace)
Description
The Subject Matter
 What is the function of the architecture?
 Is the design suitable for the function for which the architecture was built?
 What is the significance of the architecture in terms of personal, historical, social, or
political value?
The architecture was designed as a government guest house and until 2016, functioned as the official
residence and principal workplace of former Philippine Vice President Jejomar Binay. As such, the
rooms served various functions for work, guests and government activities.
The Materials
 What materials are used in the structure?
 Do these materials enhance the beauty of the structure?

HRC Contemporary Arts – First Semester

It was constructed using parts of the coconut tree, combined with metal, glass, shells and concrete. The
motif exudes local, homey ambiance and a calm atmosphere.
The Art elements and Principles
 What are the dominant elements used in the architecture?
 How is space used within the architecture?
 How does space support its function?
Twin columns, which serve as ornament to the structure, support the salakot- style roofing with smooth
triangular tip enclosing the base architecture that is made of two-story concrete walls.
The natural color of coconut is complemented with brown roofing and contrast with the white walls in
the first floor.
Texture is shown by the different parts of the coconut tree, combined with wood cut.
Analysis
Coconut is abundant in the Philippines but its use has always been more practical than aesthetic. We
know of the nipa hut which uses coconut leaves and coco lumber. In the coconut palace, the architecture
was designed primarily with aesthetics in mind. From a distance, the viewer is met by the twin coconut
posts. The motif of the architecture is native and biomorphic as its design is inspired by the coconut tree.
However, the materials used and the form of the structure prove to be contemporary in style.
The architecture was designed to serve as a guest house for special government guests, such as then
Pope John Paul the Great ( who refused to be accommodated in it). The design is also appropriate to its
function as a government office.

Interpretation
Coconut trees are strong. Amidst the strongest typhoons and winds, they stand firm and continue to
nourish man with its fruit and oil and give him shelter through its leaves. This tree is referred to as the
“Tree of Life” and is a symbol of fortitude and strength amidst challenges.
The Coconut Palace is valuable to the Philippine culture. It serves as the architectural landmark that
showcases what art can be made out of the coconut tree.

Discussion:
Installation art is an art form consisting of three-dimensional works that are often site- specific and
designed to transform interior or exterior spaces to achieve an effect. They are designed and installed
only in the space for which they were created.

HRC Contemporary Arts – First Semester

Installation art is composed of several genres sch as painting, sculpture and materials, like ready- made,
found objects, drawings and objects assembled together to interact with space creatively as designed by
the artists. Depending on the number of objects and the nature of display, installation spaces can range
from cluttered to minimal. Plet Bolipata’s Beetles, for example, are made from used bathtubs, crocheted
lace, steel and decorative items sealed with resin.
After exhibition for a relatively brief period, the installation art piece is usually dismantled, in some
cases, burned. This is the reason why installation art does not consider sale nor profit; they are
temporary and most of the time, cannot be stored nor repeated. If the artwork has to be shown again, the
context and surrounding environment may not be the same as the original context.
Installation as a visual art form, is labor intensive and the artist usually works with fellow artists and
assistants with welding, carpentry, construction and fabrication skills because installation art involves a
combination of several things: architectural setting, environment site, use of everyday objects in a
specific context and the viewer/ participant. Therefore, artists also study things that are outside the field
of art such as physics, engineering, chemistry, geology and sometimes, the technical aspects of operating
and controlling music, light and wind. The combination of many different elements is done to objectify
what only the artists can see in mind and imagination.
There are different types of installation art:
Types Description Example
Technology- aided installation It consists of an installation art In Ohm David’s The Grid, he

The light projections differ in
intensity, thus allowing the
interlay of light and shadow,
producing interesting rhythmic
patterns throughout the
installation. This is best
appreciated in a dark room
where the light contrasts with a
dark environment.
Performance installation art It is combined with theater and
dance.
Lights and sounds are part of
the design and performance is

This type of installation requires
careful planning not only for the
placement of the materials but
more importantly, to achieve the
desired effect when combined

performers’ movements.
The installation is best
appreciated when all of these
elements interact in the light-

Art Appreciation
The role of the viewer of the installation art is different from that of the artist who made it. At the same
tie, the viewing experience would also be very different compared to viewing a painting, for example,
which usually is from a single reference point.
HRC Contemporary Arts – First Semester

Installation art requires the viewers active engagement with the artwork. This may involve physically
interacting or entering into the space of the artwork to encounter it from multiple points of view.
Installation art may also engage many or all of the human senses aside from the visual sense: touch,
sound and smell.
Viewing an installation art may be guided by a closer look at quality and content. To determine its
quality, the form, materials and technique employed in the art production process can be described. In
exploring the content of the artwork, analyze the social and human conditions that shaped the mindset of
the artist or influenced his or her style. This may, however, require research or knowledge of Philippine
history, events and issues to help in your analysis.
Quality: Form, Materials and Technique:
In Manny Montelibano’s Escabeche: Filipino Sweet and Sour, the main form is achieved through the
telephone handsets hanging by their wires attached to the metal structure that seem to house them. The
lady holding the receiver is engaged in a telephone conversation.
The materials used are a metal structure, several telephones, a spotlight and a lady in a green jacket
which contrasts with the dominant cream colors of the telephone handsets. The dark area surrounding
the installation and the materials used bring out the intended effect of the artist where he highlights the
process of communication experienced by OFWs and their families. There is an overhead spotlight
focused on the telephone handsets that create a shadow on the floor which adds drama. The space
engulfs the lady, the only warm body amidst it all, which expresses a contrast between the user (warm
body) and the gadget (cold, lifeless) used.
Content: Social Context
The main subject of the installation is the telephone conversation between the Filipins overseas and their
families left behind. The human being amidst the cold environment represents the emotional
incompatibility between gadget and technology and human feelings and emotions.
The artwork is a reaction to the communication experience of the growing number of OFWs and their
families in the Philippines. It shows the inability of telephones to capture the emotions and feelings
present in human conversation. The artist installed several handsets to show telephone lines working
simultaneously around the world. Light was focused only at the middle of the structure where the lady
stands and the rest was dark.
The artwork is an effective way to show the essence of communication in human relationships. It
conveys the message that while a telephone call is the easiest way to connect, it cannot make up for the
physical absence of loved ones.

Discussion
Mixed and multimedia art refers to an artwork that is made from a combination of mediums or materials.
It can be a combination of photographs and paintings or stones embedded on wood, for example. Ink can
be combined with pastel or layers of textile painted with acrylic. Instead of using seeds, shells, stones
and fiber as raw material for the artwork, some modern artists employ commercial garbage- especially
the abundant rubbish of the technology, digital and print industries.
Mixed and multimedia art can also be used to express political views, social statements or a reaction to
an issue. The things put together in an artwork can represent something: an idea, a protest, a bias, a
position or a challenge. In mixed media art, the theme is as good as any other. This means the artists are
not controlled by the conventions of doing art.

Art Appreciation
Just like in any visual art, the viewer has to understand the qualities of the artwork to be able to
appreciate it. In mixed and multimedia art, the medium and materials are of primary consideration.
Aside from identifying what was used, you have to analyze how they were put together and what the
artwork represents. There are factors that have shaped it which are part of the personal as well as the
social life of the artist.
Appreciation of mixed and multimedia art may be guided by a closer look at quality and content. To
determine the quality of the artwork, you can describe the form, materials and technique employed in the
art production process. In exploring the content of the artwork, analyze the human and social conditions
that may have shaped the thinking of the artist and influenced his or her style.

Quality: Form, Materials and Technique

The subject matter of the artwork is shapes and colors. As the title Bilog-Bilog suggests, the colorful
shapes consist of tiny button and mirror circles stitched and embedded into the padded canvas. This style
is called Trapunto Painting. Buttons and mirrors are stitched on padded canvas and painted with acrylic.
Collage mixed media, as a medium, best expresses the artist’s intended two-dimensional effect.
The artwork consists of a variety of irregular shapes, which is characteristic of abstraction. There are no
identifiable figures. Instead, each shape has color that connects harmoniously to the next colored shapes,
which are separated only by different colors of outline. In the upper middle part of the frame are the
color hues from yellow to green and blue. The range colors break the monotony of pattern and shapes.
Texture is heavy as a result of the thousands of tiny objects stitched on to the canvas.

Content: Social Context

The artist expresses herself through colors and tangible materials sewn and attached to the canvas. This
process of artmaking is important to the contemporary artist. The arrangement of objects within each
frame and connecting it to the next is a part of the creative process. The result is a happy mix of color
and texture that is pleasing to the eye of the viewer. Would it be the same if the colors were painted on a
flat surface? Not at all. It will lose its details and the vibrant effect of the tiny buttons.
The artwork is a celebration of color, feeling and mood- the things that give meaning to the artwork.

Digital Art
Digital art is an art form that uses digital technology as an essential part of the creative or presentation
process. We have seen these in cartoon shows on television and lately, in movies with digital
intervention. Digital artwork can be posted online through the internet and distributed electronically in a
split of a second and can be viewed by anyone who is hooked to cyberspace. Some artists print out their
digital art and exhibit them as a two-dimensional artwork hanging on the wall.

Art Appreciation
Just like in any visual art, the viewer has to understand the qualities of photography and digital art to be
able to appreciate it. In these art forms, the digital camera and computer are essential tools. Everybody
can take photos using a gadget. However, knowledge of the elements of art ad organization of design is
necessary to come up with an artistic photograph. When looking at photographs and digital art, the
viewer has to take a closer look at how the art elements are used to achieve beauty in the artwork. Social
context can also be reflected in the art form, especially when it projects unaltered reality which can be
used for photojournalism.
Appreciation of photography and digital art may be guided by a closer look at quality and content. To
determine the quality of the artwork, you can describe the form, materials and technique employed in the
art production process. In exploring the content of the artwork, analyze the human and social conditions
that may have shaped the thinking of the artist and influenced his or her style.

Quality: Form, Materials and Technique

The digital art resembles a large flat-screen TV showing room furniture that are positioned irregularly in
a room. Its stillness is disturbed by pieces of shattered glass that look like sharp, flat asteroids and
meteors traveling at high speed across the universe toward the window. The truth is they are frozen in
space.
The artist used collage, assemblage and painting to create an illusion of movement just like in moving
pictures. In the exhibition, viewing of the artwork was aided by android devices installed with the
FACETS app that gives off sound and 3-D graphics. The moving effect is achieved only with the aid of
digital technology.
The artwork is attached to the wall and is not moving. However, looking at it aided by an android
device, the unmoving images move in an interesting way, with the shattered glass appearing to be
transparent and moving.

The artwork seems to depict the psychological state of man in the modern world characterized by
stillness and isolation from other human beings. The moving shards of broken glass that are traveling
like meteors toward space create a magical feeling and yet an unsettling one because they seem to be
traveling at high speed toward a direction that the enclosed room cannot provide. In fact, they are
traveling toward a dead end.

Preparation for Quarterly Exam

Second Quarter

Contemporary Design in Art Crafts

Overview

Contemporary crafts in the Philippine regions take the form of bags, mats, textile, baskets, footwear,
ceramic pot, clay pottery, jewelry, metalwork, to name some. It requires putting together different
materials from pandan (seagrass), coconut leaves, abaca, buri (palm), pina, shell or bamboo. Folk arts in
the different regions have evolved as they have been influenced by globalization. New techniques aided
by technology, global aesthetic, and market demand. For example, banig is made from pandan or
seagrass and were traditionally woven into sleeping mats in its natural color. Today, different types of
banig are produced in different colors and are designed with flowers, birds, landscapes or geometric
shapes. Aside from sleeping mats, they are also made into bags, wall decors and throw pillow cases.
Part of our second quarter is all about performing arts and it include: film, theater and performance arts,
dance and music. These are different from the visual arts I the sense that they move in time and space
and usually involve a group of people of different knowledge and skills- each one playing a specific roe.
As such, understanding each genre better requires the application of the typology of visual, dramatic and
literary components. For dance, it is necessary to look into the knowledge of choreography, technical
skills, performance skills, rhythm/tempo. For music, focus is on form, context and expression.

Second Quarter
In Lesson 1 you will learn about Contemporary crafts in the Philippine regions like bags,
mats, textile, baskets, footwear, ceramic pot, clay pottery, jewelry, metalwork. You will also know that
folk arts in the different regions have evolved as they have been influenced by globalization.
Lesson 2 will make you recognize the Famous Filipino Furniture Designers. You will
also know that there are only few contemporary designers in the Philippines. The famous ones have
been educated abroad and have good exposure to modern furniture as they are well travelled and have
interacted with Western and Asian furniture designers.
In Lesson 3 you will know about Filipino artists who engage in ceramics, pottery and
terra- cotta art see their work as an expression of love for Mother Earth. With their hands, they work
with mud and clay to form creative objects and strengthen these through firing techniques.

Discussion:
Contemporary art craft expressions find inspiration in folk art. Folk art pieces are produced by
indigenous people, which are utilitarian, as well as decorative. It uses plants that are abundant locally,
such as buri (palm), pandan (seagrass leaves), abaca, pia (pineapple) or bamboo.
Different regions weave mats depending on the abundance of local plants. Ilocos has the famous
inabel weave and the handwoven binakul, which has been dwindling. Abaca is most dominant in the
Bicol region and is used to make sandals, bags, rags and handicrafts. Handicrafts include a wide range of
decorative objects done by the hand using simple tools. Banig is a handwoven mat used for sleeping.
Buri mat is woven by the Samals of Sulu. In Samar, pandan leaves are dyed green and then buri strips
are interwoven with the base design.

Types of Contemporary Expressions

TYPES DESCRIPTION
Woven products: textile, fabrics and clothing - Woven products used as clothing, bags and
accessories that are based on folk art and
design are gaining popularity locally and
globally. This way our products are not
only recognized by more people but also
provide employment and foster
development and sustainability of the art
craft industry.
- With the use of the modern technology,
fashion designers have developed the
tactile qualities and unique texture of our
local products for comfort and style. They
have been successful in bringing our local
fabrics to the fashion industry and to the
global consumer market.
- Example of this is the barong tagalog.
Modern fashion designers have created
variations of the original barong so that it
is now also worn by women. There is a
variety of embroidery design and they
come in different colors, such as red, blue,

brown, yellow, green. The polo barong is
another variety that was designed to be
worn at work. They have short sleeves and
are made of cotton, ramie or chiffonille.
- Aside from local tailor shops and city
malls, creative designs of barong are
shown at fashion shows.
Bags and accessories - Bags of different sizes and shapes can be
functional and aesthetic.
- Ilocos abel fabrics designed with
geometric patterns are both fashionable
and useful, especially for students who use
them as bags.
- In Bacolod, pandan leaves are woven and
can be tied with cow leather to make bags
of export quality.
- In Bicol, rattan and other types of wood
are used as bag handles.
- Banig can also be used as little purses, as
in the case of Tacloban.
Footwear - Indigenous materials such as beads,
crochet, rattan and woven fabric are used
as materials for footwear. They prove to be
strong, durable and attractive.
- Yuchengco Museum organized a bazaar of
handmade Filipino products and
handcrafted ware in November 2014.
Home-use products - Because of environmental concerns, we are
more selective of the material component
of the products that we use, especially at
home.
- Banig is used for throw pillow cases in
Cebu. In Bukidnon, abaca is woven into
hats, baskets and different types of
containers. In Bacolod, trays are made of
pandan leaves. In Bohol, rapia makes good
material for bottle holders.
Lamshades - Lampshades can be made from native
plants such as buri and abaca.
- Maria Vinecraft, Inc. of Davao City makes
lampshades from the amlong vine.
- Bacolod artist Anita Feria uses ceramics
and paints these to make ceiling lamps.
Decors - Tapestries are wall decors that are made of
woven fabric. These are common in Ilocos
and Baguio City.
- The mosaic, Sarimanok and other decors
such as Holy Family by Jojo Vito are
produced by the charity organization, NVC
Foundation. Mosaic Crafter is an example
of its entrepreneurial advocacy.
Masks - In many ethnic tribes in the Philippines,
masks are believed to have magical
powers.
- They can serve as dwelling for ancestral

evil spirits.
- Contemporary artists make masks for
decorative purposes.
- In Puerto Princesa’s Ka Lui Restaurant, we
find examples of wooden masks that depict
different character. The common color is
brown combined with black.

Furniture (kasangkapan) pieces in the traditional Filipino house were simple and functional. These
include the clothes cabinet (parador), kitchen window rack for drying utensils (banggera), cabinet for
food and utensils (paminggalan), chairs (bangko) and tables (la mesa) and beds made of bamboo (papag)
with no mattress. It was the Spanish missionaries and colonizers who introduced a variety of other
furniture pieces such as altar tables, benches, sofas, cupboards, full length mirrors, dressers and chests.
For the affluent Filipinos, beds were either made of hardwood, brass or iron. The gallinera was a long
chair with the bottom used to cage roosters. Mexican merchants introduced inlaid furniture (muebles
enconchados), oversized cabinets made of ebony with silver and mother- of – pearl inlays. There
are only few contemporary designers in the Philippines. The famous ones have been educated abroad
and have good exposure to modern furniture as they are well- traveled and have interacted with Western

and Ilocos and most of them still carry the more traditional designs that match local architecture.

Maria Erica Masalonga Solace Rocking Chair, her official entry that won

Meanwhile, its metal frame is made from recycled

Contemporary furniture designs are in demand in business offices. Modular designs offer support for
systematic work and movement in the office. Desks, chairs, filing cabinets and computers are arranged
so that the occupant simply turns the chair without having to cross the room, which can be time
consuming.
Hotels and restaurants are big clients in the furniture industry. However, they demand designs that
match the building motif. Hotels have reception areas, lobbies, function rooms, bedrooms and halls that
all require particular furniture that can match the room design.
Another resort that is artistically design is Pearl Farm in Davao which uses oversized furniture by Milo
Naval in their lounge. Naval is a known designer of oversized furniture. Ma. Cristina Floirendo Brias
designed the cushions with T’boli patterns.
The walls and dividers can look interesting when covered with buri palm fiber. Its texture breaks the
monotony of the paint on the wall and creates a friendly ambiance. This is seen in the dividers in the
Buzz Café in Tagbilaran.

Art Appreciation
Just like in any visual art, the viewer has to understand the qualities of contemporary furniture to be able
to appreciate it. You have learned that contemporary furniture designers do not only consider form and
function. They use technology, new materials and measurements that fit the physical size, comfort,
demands and movement of the users. This will guide you in your appreciation of the contemporary
furniture where you will focus on its form, function and materials.

Discussion:
Cotemporary ceramic, pottery and terra-cotta are of two types: functional and decorative.
Ceramics that serve a practical purpose are sed in the hoe, such as tableware, vases, oil burners, oil and
lotion bottles, pitchers, trays or tea sets. These may be found in different parts of the home such as the
living room bedroom or the garden, likewise in business reception rooms, offices or hotel lobbies.
Whether it servs a function or not, ceramics, pottery and terra cotta posses the elements of art. They
have form and are characterized by their shape, color and texture. Sometimes they come in many pieces
that are arranged in a certain way, like a tea set with cups and saucers.

Park, Salcedo Village, Makati on March 22,2015. The artist did this to raise funds for Iloilo Central
High School.
Jon Pettyjohn is very famous for his creative ceramics. He has a huge collection of works and is known
globally for his art. Jon makes teacups, jars and other functional objects, always with creative artistic
design which is never mass produced. Together with his wife Tessy, he offers workshop on ceramics
making. They have trained thousands of people since they founded the Putik Association for potters I
2003. They are considered pioneers in contemporary
Philippine pottery in both functional and decorative categories. Tessy Pettyjohn makes beautiful flowers,
mushrooms and other nature- inspired objects. ( View their creations at

Ugu Bigyan’s works are inspired by nature. “Everything around me is inspired by nature- colors,
textures, shapes of the plants, flowers, rivers stones, oceans, fish, birds, etc” He uses dried leaves of
fern, gabi and others to shape and design his plates and vases. He also uses different hues of paint, such
as blue, green and brown, which reflect nature.

Discussion:
There is abundance of paper, coffee, tattoo, tuba and soil n the Philippine regions. What is needed is to
promote these as art mediums and to train young artists on how to make decorative art products out of
these.
It s a form of art which is considered as a new expression through new mediums like paper, coffee,
tattoo, tuba and soil. While the medium varies, the Filipino subject matter remains. This is evident in the
works of artists found in the different regions. Their products are patronized not only by art enthusiasts
but also by tourists and commercial places like the coffee industry. In the case of tuba painting, a
workshop was eld by a Filipino artist collaborating with foreign artist to promote awareness and develop
young talents.

Soil Art Soil can be painted on when put on a canvas using
adhesive. Set on a background of seemingly banig-
woven wall, Adelfa Kinuyog used complimentary
colors blended with gray. In Kinuyogs artwork above,
perspective is used to show depth. On the foreground
is a mother quietly seated but busy weaving while the
baby sleeps calmly in a hammock. “Adelfa is from
the Talaandig community in Bukidnon Province,
Mindanao. She was influenced by artist Salima
Saway to do soil painting. Most of her artworks are
about their community to promote their culture and
traditions
Tattoo is a traditional decorative body art popular in
the northern region. There are many different motifs
and designs used for tattoo art. In Kalinga, there are
four major designs:
 The imitation of woven garment
silup
 The tinago, image of a well-
muscled man etched on the chest
 The pongo, bracelet motif rendered
as a single line of stars and grass
 The native dog, man’s best friend
In Bontoc, tattoo designs include tnat-araw (stars) and
inal-alam (grass), ginaygayaman ( centipede), teytey
(ladder) and taklag, a series of geometric markings as
mark of a true warrior.

Lesson 5: Contemporary Performing Arts - Film

Lesson Objectives:
At the end of this lesson, you are expected to define contemporary performing arts in the
Philippines. Do some research on various contemporary performing arts and you can explain Filipino
artists’ roles and identify their contribution to contemporary arts.

Day 18 – online class
Discussion: Film Showing – Old Movies
Day 19 – asynchronous
Activity #1

Discussion:
The film industry is faced with a lot of challenges. From 1960’s to the years after the fall of Marcos’s
regime, there was a lack of tax incentives that could have helped produce better films.
A new breed of Filipino directors were brave enough to direct films that portrayed revolt, labor
unionism, social ostracism and class division. These were Lino Brocka, Peque Gallaga, Ishmael Bernal,
Celso Ad Castillo and Marilou Diaz Abaya.
Lino Brocka founded the organization Concerned Artists of the Philippines (CAP), dedicated to helping
artists address issues confronting the country. In Filmmaking, he used “conventional love triangles, rape
and violent action” which revealed the sufferings in Filipino life due to economic exploitation through
symbols and an elaborate plot. An example is his 1975 movie, Maynila, sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag.
This is a story of a provincial man’s stay in the city of Manila, the changes he had to cope with, and his
discovery that his childhood sweetheart, brought to Manila some time ago for schooling, was deceived
and sold to a Chinese brothel owner instead.
( Showing of this movie to the students)
Peque Gallaga was born in Manila and studied in Bacolod City. He directed the award winning Oro
Plata, Mata and the famous Shake, Rattle and Roll I,II,III and IV and more than 20 other films.
Shake, Rattle and Roll is an anthology with 15 films from 1984 to 2014. Gallaga was also the director of
Manananggal starring Herbert Bautista, Irma Alegre, Mary Walter, Peewee Quijano and Pen Medina.
Filmmaker Ishmael Bernal, meanwhile, is noted for his melodramas, particularly with feminist and
moral themes. He received the CMMA Best Director award (1983), the Bronze Hugo Award in the
Chicago International Film Festival (1983) for the movie Himala (1982), which starred Nora Aunor.
The movie is about a small town, Cupang, where townsfolk believed that their ill-fated town was
suffering because of a curse placed upon the town or driving a leper away.
HRC Contemporary Arts – First Semester

In Celso Ad Castillo’s Ang Pinakamagandang Hayop sa Balat ng Lupa, Gloria Diaz plays the role of
Isabel, a woman who appeared one day in a small seaside town and changed the lives of people there
with her cunning beauty and allure. Isabel was the object of passion of the town’s men and the cause of
jealousy and heartbreak for the town’s women.
Marilou Diaz Abaya was a multi awarded film Director and the founder and president of the Marilou
Diaz-Abaya Film Institute and Arts Center, a film school based in Antipolo City. She was a 2001
laureate of the Fukuoka Prize for Culture and the Arts in Japan, the recipient of British Film Institute
Award and winner of dozens of local awards. Her film Muro-Ami depicts the fate of child laborers
employed in the fishing industry who are using the illegal fishing technique of the same title. I exposed
the manipulation of children who made at least eight dives a day pounding and crushing corals to drive
the fish toward the fishing nets.

The Directors of the New Wave

The directors of the new wave either “tended toward exposing relevant social topics or hybridizing
Filipino topics with Western Techniques. Also called alternative filmmakers, these directors yearned for
more creative freedom in their works.
From the Cordillera Administrative Region, Eric de Guia, also known as Kidlat Tahimik, is famous
for his neocolonial films and his short documentaries such as Bubong, in which he travels the world and
films its different roofs. The film Memories of Overdevelopment fulfills Tahimik’s dream project about
the first Filipino brought to Europe by Pigafetta to ever circumnavigate the globe and is perpetually
edited and restored.
Raymond Red was one of the first Filipinos to receive a Rotterdam Hubert Bals Memorial grant and the
first so far only Filipino to have won the prestigious Palme d’Or award at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival
for his short film Anino. He is also known for his super 8 films that explored the revolution against the
Spaniards through the perspective of Andres Bonifacio in his Bayani (1992) and the revolution against
the Americans through Macario Sakay’s eyes in Sakay (1993).
Nick Deocampo, in his practice of nonfiction documentary films and short films, filmed Revolutions
Happen Like Refrains in a Song, “ a postmortem on the people power revolution of 1986 and a
Legacy of Violence, which contributed a view of the history of the country.
Benito Bautista of Bulacan, Region 3, is an independent filmmaker based in San Francisco, California
whose Harana, a documentary on the search for the lost art of serenading in the modern world of speed,
technology and forgotten traditions in 2012, won the Hawaii International Film Festival’s Audience
Award for Best Documentary.
Manny Reyes’s satirical commentaries on provincial politics are seen n Suwapings (1994), a story of a
citizen’s rebellion against Barrio Talong’s corrupt mayor whose plan was to dub a group of Filipino-
Americans as hometown heroes if they donate a huge amount of money to him.
In Maryo J. Delos Reyes’s Bamboo Flowers, the film production did not only require knowledge and
the skill in filmmaking, the director also had to understand the people of Bohol- their lives, beliefs and
traditions and their relationship with nature because the story revolves around man and nature.
Kita-kita is the highest grossing Philippine Independent Film, garnering 320 million pesos in the box
office and was selected by CNN as the best romantic comedy film in the last 25 years. The romantic
comedy was written and directed by Sigrid Andrea Bernardo and starred Alessandra de Rossi and
Empoy Marquez. It is a story set in Sapporo, Japan where Lea, played by de Rossi, was a tourist guide
who went blind. Tonyo played by Marquez, who was in search of a new life in a new town, found Lea.
The two became friends and a brief but heartwarming love story developed between the two.

Discussion:
Young film directors use technology to create special effects in film. Erik Matti of Bacolod City, Region
6, is the director of the first full-length Filipino film shot on green screen chroma-key that mixes
elements of action, comedy and horror in order to juxtapose the old sensibilities of the aswang legend
with contemporary style. This film made heavy use of technology and the modern green screen Dondon
Monteverde reveals that Tiktik: The Aswang Chronicles was not an easy endeavor to undertake.

Film Appreciation
The Critical Appreciation of Cinema
Feldman offers a typology, a set of concepts to direct the viewer’s attention to the principal elements in
the cinema experience. Its purpose is to suggest the range of qualities within each element of film. The
viewer can look into the elements under three components: the visual, the dramatic and the literary.

Typology of cinematic forms

The typology should assist you in describing and analyzing a film experience before proceeding to
interpret and judge it. This device should enable you to attend to all sources of imagery in the cinema,
visual, aural, kinetic and verbal- while endeavoring to fathom their interaction and overall meaning.
For simplicity, the visual, dramatic, and literary components of cinematic form can be described through
the perception of the elements: space, time and symbol where you examine a quality of focus .

What was the style used in that stage play? What can you say about the artists, did they
perform well according to their character? Explain your answer and upload it in MS

Discussion:
Performance, whether on theater stage, on the street other spaces, reflects human life and different
patterns of human behavior. It reveals human strengths, weaknesses, decisions, consequences and
everything else human.

Performing arts include performance art, theater, dance and music, where artists perform in front of an
audience. Performers organize their performance with the support of songwriters, choreographers, visual
designers, stage light engineers and actors/actresses. They can alter their appearance through the use of
facial makeup and costumes. They also make use of props and light effects.

Performance Art
Artists engaged in performance art conceptualize their acts in relation to the minimal props needed to get
a concept, an idea or an advocacy across. They use the basic elements of time, space, the performer’s
body and the audience who will randomly witness their performance. Their act can take place anywhere
and with any length of time. The purpose is not to entertain but to coney a message in a dramatic sense.
It is not the same as a theatrical play in the sense that it does not depict a set of fictitious characters
following a script. The performance can include action, spoken words, or sounds imitating something
that is essential to the idea they are communicating.
Contemporary performance artists challenge the audience to think about an issue.

Theater Arts
Production
The elements of theater are varied and complex and may include the physical presence of the actors, the
colors and shapes of the costumes and scenery, sound and music, drama and the ideas and emotions
expressed by the playwright, among other things, that dynamically interplay with each other within
specific temporal and spatial frames at each point of the performance.
The performance is based on dramatic text staged using techniques of theater production and enacted
and interpreted by artists, directors, designers and other personnel before audiences who are in the site of
performance. The dramatic text is an interpretation of a literary piece narrating a story with a conflict
that develops into a series of crises and ultimately, a climax. The story can either reach a happy or an
unhappy ending.

-Elements of Dramatic Theatrical Performance

Elements Description
Plot The arrangement of events which has a beginning,
middle and end
Character The principal material of the performance, the
central focus of the plot
Thought The main idea or concept that the characters
dramatize
Language or diction The expression of meaning through the use of
words; uses formal language to convey meaning,
establish mood, tempo and rhythm and internal
logic; should be appropriate to the role of the
character
Song or music The speaking, dancing and singing part in the
performance, which includes sound of actors’
voices, incidental songs and background music
and instrumental accompaniment.
Spectacle The visual elements of production that include
HRC Contemporary Arts – First Semester

characters’ movement and spatial relations,
lighting, settings, costumes and properties or
props.

All visual aspects of a production are composed of basic elements such as line, shape, space, color,
texture and ornament. In applying these elements, certain principles are used such as harmony, variety,
balance, proportion, emphasis and rhythm.
The director puts together a variety of elements so that the audience can sit and view a coherent theater
performance

The theater space is usually set on a stage, which has 4 basic types. Each type has its own advantages
and disadvantages and uniquely provides different viewing experiences.
The 4 basic theater stages are the following:
1. Proscenium or picture frame stage, the action takes place behind the proscenium opening or
frame.
In this type of stage, the seats in the auditorium face the stage like the seats in a movie theater
facing the screen.

2. Arena or circle stage, the stage may either be raised a few feet above the floor with seats rising
from the floor level or it may be on the floor with seats raised on levels around it.

3. Thrust stage is with three- quarter seating arranged in a semicircle that encloses the stage
protruding the center.

HRC Contemporary Arts – First Semester

4. Created and found stage space can be any kind of structure wherein its original architectural
elements are kept intact during the performance, such as lofts, warehouses, gyms, etc.

Style in Philippine Theater Arts

Theater art consists of acting in front of an audience, uses a combination of gesture, music, dance,
sound, speech or a narrative. Theater takes many forms, such as plays, musical, opera ballet or a
combination of contemporary forms.
Among the notable Manila based figures who shaped the modern Philippine theater are Lamberto V.
Avellana, Henry Lee Irwin SJ, Severino Montano, Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero, Onofre Pagsanghan, Rolando
S. Tinio, Zenaida Amador (who established Repertory Philippines), Antonio Mabesa, Behn Cervantes,
Nonon Padilla,Anton Juan Jr., Lutgardo Labad, Soxy Topacio, Joel Lamangan and Tony Espejo.
Meanwhile, there are region-based directors such as Leo Rimando, Joonee Gamboa, Nestor Horfilla,
Steven Patrick Fernandez, Frank Rivera, Rodulfo Galenzoga, Karl Gaspar, Edward Defensor and
Orlando Magno who contributed as well to the development of the local theater fields.
The following are styles that dominate Philippine theater:
 Realism- this style is manifested in contemporary theater in two aspects: first, it
highlights the psychological aspect, bringing into light the issues or challenges faced
by the individuals involved in the narrative and second is the social aspect, which
situates those struggles of the individual in the larger context of the class society.
--Psychological realism- several Philippine plays in English stand out as brilliant
psychological
studies of the characters it features. Among them is Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero’s Three
Rats (1948)
which tells the story of an affair between a woman and a close friend of her husband.
There is also Nick Joaquin’s A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino (1955), which
features the clashing forces between the refined hispanized culture and
commercialized American culture. This is framed through the story of two unmarried
sisters residing in Intramuros.
Psychological realism in plays written in filipin oar also abundant.
Orlando Nadres’s Paraisong Parisukat (1974) explores what led a young girl to
sacrifice her ideals and even love as she settles for a career as a stockroom assistant.
Bienvenido Noriega Jr.’s Bayan-bayanan (1975) unravels the bittersweet lives that
Filipino expatriates experience in Switzerland.
--Social realism-in the contemporary Philippine theater stage was a reaction to the
socioeconomic-political issues that confronted the Filipinos.
Alberto Florentino’s play The World is an Apple (1954) tells the story of a father
who was pushed to steal just to provide for his child’s medicine. Such plays gained
popularity during the 1970s and 1980s.
Paul Dumol’s historical play FranciscoManiago (1987) has its eponymous
character face the challenge of keeping his fidelity to the King of Spain at the cost of
betraying his community, family and self.
 Combination of realistic and nonrealistic styles-Example of this is Malou Jacob’s
Juan Tamban (1987) that tells the stories of street urchin Juan Tamban, who eats

HRC Contemporary Arts – First Semester

lizards and roaches and an upper middle class social worker writing her thesis but
who inadvertently gets sucked in the politics surrounding her topic.
Tony Perez’s Sa North Diversion Road (1988) features two actors playing the role
of different married couples as they react when problems of marital infidelity come
into the picture.
 Brechtian style- Tiongson (1994) notes that the Brechtian style, with is bouts of
absurdism, can be found in Paul Dumol’s Ang Paglilitis ni Mang Serapio (1968)
which is considered one of the most performed plays in the last two decades. As
punishment, Serapio’s eyes are gouged out in the play- a fate considered “humane” as
it will make him a “better” beggar.
He also sees the similar style evident in Al Santos’s Ang Sistem ni Propesor Tuko
(1980), which uses the authoritarian rule of a fascistic professor to satirize the
Philippine society under the Marcos dictatorship
Rolando S. Tinio’s May Katwiran ang Katwiran (1972) which depicts how a
landlord was able to manipulate a simple peasant into believing the landlord’s
“superiority” over him.
 Musical Performances- presentational style when it comes to musical performances
has steadily evolved over the past few decades. For example, Fe Remotigue and Don
Pagusara’s Sinalimba
Expertly uses Bagobo musical instruments with its cotemporary artistic expression. In
it, performances are done in the form of dance drama accompanied with ethnic music
and movements to highlight the influence of traditional folklore and contemporary
myths.
 Documentary styles- documentary styles are usually employed when dealing with
historical events and individuals, such as in Al Santos’s Mayo A- Beinte Uno atbp
Kabanata. With the use of narrators and newspaper clippings, the production told the
life story of Valentin De los Santos, the leader of a political party called Lapiang
Malaya, as he and his comrades march against these in authority.
 Short plays- dula-tula is another term used to describe short plays. Among the most
notable ones are Jose F. Lacaba’s Ang mga Kagilagilalas na Pakikipagsapalaran
ni Juan Dela Cruz, which details the life of a common Filipino devoid of his rights
and Richie Valencia’s Iskolar ng Bayan ( 1976) which portrays the life of students
at the University of the Philippines.

Dance in the Philippine regions is dominated by the new creative interpretations of traditional
and folk dances which are performed by members of the community during festivals such as the
Sinulog in Cebu and Dinagyang in Iloilo.
HRC Contemporary Arts – First Semester

Contemporary dance is a performing art that involves rhythmic body movements within a given
space, choreographed following the musical beat. It is performed either by dance performers in
front of an audience or by everyone on the dance floor. Wherever it is performed, it is an
expression of an idea or emotion, releasing energy or simply taking delight in music and the
dance movement itself.
There are 3 big names in Philippine dance descried in this section:
Alice Garcia Reyes- established the Alice Reyes Modern dance Company with dancers from the
Bayanihan Dance Company, UE Dance Troupe and Dance Theater Philippines. In the same year,
the first summer dance workshop at the CCP was conducted among 400 students. This was the
beginning of the CCP Dance Company. Reyes also initiated the professionalization of dance arts
in the country with her persistence in raising funds for the company so that performers can
become full- time dancers with decent earnings. On June 20, 2010, Reyes was proclaimed
National Artist for dance.
Lisa Teresita Pacheco Macuja- Elizalde- another woman who deserves credit for bringing
ballet to the ordinary people and the founder of Ballet, Manila. She studied ballet in Europe and
became a prima ballerina of Kirov Ballet in Leningrad.
Douglas Nierras- is the most prominent in jazz. He has more than 2 decades of involvement in
dance through choreography, pedagogy and production. He is famous for his Metanoia, in which
he collaborated with musician Ryan Cayabyab to create a 34 minute ballet set to the five general
parts of the Latin Mass- the Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus and Agnus Dei. Critic Marge Enriquez
says of Douglas Nierras, “ This choreographer has evolved into one who tackles deep, spiritual
themes, interpreting them in a dramatic way. Nobody has ever gone this far to push Bush not
going Philippine dance to greater heights.

Contemporary Dancing Styles

 Disco dancing sedan style popularized during the 1970s. Disco dancing is associated
with John Travolta's dance style in the movie Saturday night fever . It is characterized
by movements in the hip and the pelvic regions of the body and raising of arms to the
beat of the disco music. Its music production involved mixing engineers because it
required many tracks of vocals and instruments that are compiled into the
composition of disco sound with its distinctive disco mix. The rise of disco came with
the use of records to create a continuous mix of songs which was operated by the disc
jockey.
 Hip-hop, which originated in America, refers to street dance styles performed to hip-
hop music. It includes dance styles such as breaking, locking and popping. A number
of movies and television shows have stories evolving around hip-hop, such as The
Grind, Rize, Street Dance, Saigon Electric and Step Up.

Contemporary Dance in the Philippine Regions

Traditional and folk dances abound the different regions in the Philippines. Most notable
contemporary dancer is Norbert dela Cruz III of Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya, Region 2. He has
innovated movement in order to “transcend progressive change in our world of dance. Trained
abroad and a graduate of Juilliard School in New York City, he has danced professionally as a
soloist with the Metropolitan Opera house,
Contemporary dance artists usually form groups. An example is the Contemporary dance
Network Philippines. Through its projects, the Wifi Body Festival (since2006) and the
Contemporary Dance Map (since 2005), the Dance Network has produced the most innovative
contemporary dance in the Philippines. It has also nurtured and showcased a great number of
choreographers. In 2011, the name was changed to Contemporary Dance Network Manila to
reflect a more urban aesthetic, practice and thrust. The network’s core members are: Airdance,
Chameleon Dance Theater, Dance Forum MB and UP Dance Company.

Discussion:
Music, as a human activity, is very complex. It involves creativity in putting together
melody to express an experience, a feeling, idea, words and other things human. The feelings of
pride, satisfaction , hope, accomplishment, failures, fears and joy may be beyond words but they
can be conveyed through music. The listener, on his or her part, responds to music physically,
emotionally or intellectually, as it affects human brain functions, moods, disposition, character
and thinking. Although words are used in some music pieces, the listener’s reactions to it differ,
depending on the person’s knowledge of music, disposition, mood and many other human
characteristics.

Elements of Music

Elements Description
rhythm The placement of the duration of notes and rests
in time, creating a pattern
melody Produced through to the succession of single
tones that ang together to produce the musical
sound.
harmony The tones and chords heard simultaneously, also
known as the vertical aspect of music.
Texture Whether a piece of music is conceived more in
terms of melodic lines or in a sense of
simultaneous sounds of chords, describes how
many layers of sound are going on in a certain
piece of music or the way the sounds are
combined together.

Contemporary Philippine music of the 2000s is characterized by its use of new genres such as OPM,
pop, emo, posthardcore and post rock. It is characterized by improvisation, making use of instruments
not normally used in a European orchestra, such as gongs and bamboo. The content of contemporary
music can vary from philosophical, social commentary, personal or propaganda.
