ARCHITECTURAL

DESIGN BRIEF

Oromia Broadcasting Network (OBN), the

regional broadcaster of the Oromia Regional
State, is soon to acquire a modern media com-
plex for 1.45 billion Br in Addis Abeba.

Elilly Hotel, located off Joseph Tito Street, was

the venue where Oromia Urban Development &
Housing Bureau signed a contract agreement
with China State Construction Engineering Ethi-
opia (CSCEE) last Saturday. The new media com-
plex will be built behind Dembel City Centre, off
Africa Avenue, on a 4,893sqm of land secured
from the Addis Abeba City Administration. Soil
investigation on the site was carried out about a
year ago.

The complex will make the regional-state

owned broadcaster the first in the media indus-
try to own a state of the art headquarters.

The Oromia Water Works Design & Supervision

Enterprise, established in 2006, will consult on
the 11-storey building project that sits on
4,000sqm foot print and is expected to be com-
pleted within a 900-day period from signing.

CSCEE has completed the construction of

Chinese Global TV Network (CGTN) and African
Union’s (AU) headquarters, and is currently
constructing the headquarters of the Commer-
cial Bank of Ethiopia’s (CBE) and the new Addis
Abeba Stadium. The company was selected after
a shortlisted competitive bidding against four
other Chinese state-owned contractors through
the Chinese Embassy.

Concept and Function

the concept for the complex is based on the

historic cave of Sof Omar in Bale Zone of Oromia
Regional State.

The building will contain 10 studios, all located

between the 9th and 11th floors, and a mix of TV
and radio production studios ranging in size
from 600sqm to 60sqm. The rest of the floors are
expected to hold offices, meeting halls and digi-
tal libraries.

Interior

“The interior design and construction of the

studio were awarded to CSCEE given its exten-
sive experience working on CGTN,” “The interior
design will hold up to date technologies in
safety, security, sound, lighting and acoustic
systems.”

TECHNICAL

5th and 6th floor

These floors are occupid by radio studios. They

have a doubled roof hight space with a little bit
sumberged floors. this spaces requres later a
very sofesticated studio interor works. such as;
accoustics, sound system, information system, IT
system and so on

7th, 8th and 9th

These floors are occupided by tv studios. this

room requires a special room hight which
consists a catwalk space above, and a automat-
ed camera system for differnet video recording
system. these room also have a special lighitng
system and an air conditioning system. moreo-
ver, CPU and MCR rooms are available in these
floors.

1st foor

This floor is entirely for administration office

floor. And it has 4.5m of room height in order to
consist HVAC system above the suspended
ceiling that will be dropped below the slab
bottom.

5 core

the building has 5 cores. Around the core there

are some storages and toilet spaces. Initially the
cores were designed for mono access of vertical
spaces. but will in the construction period, some
modification of horizontal circulation space that
connects the whole adjacent pace in elliptical
circulation loops in each floor. Thus, a bridge like
structures were built for connecting the separat-
ed spaces.

Air pressurized stair case and fire scape lifts

he stair cases are air pressurized. This system has

developed for fire protection. This also help to
lower the number of fire scaping spaces. This
space would be non-smoked area if incase of fire
happened. Moreover, there are some fire scape
lifts that are adopted from the Chinese govern-
ment standard.

CONCLUSTION

I can say that the OBN headquarter building is

the first class and standard broadcasting termi-
nal in the history of Ethiopia. I have learnt the
quality of this project comes along with harmo-
ny of technical issues from the initial stage of the
design up to the handover assembly and again
from the recording time up to broadcasting by
the huge satellites situated on the top of the
building.

I would like to express my pleasure to be part of

this wonderful excursion. I had special experi-
ence that will have significant impact in my
future career.
