Types of wiring – Staircase wiring, Fluorescent wiring and Godown

wiring
Pre – Lab Questions
1. What is the use of starter in fluorescent lamp?
a. Fluorescent starters or glow starters are used to help fluorescent tubes and lamps ignite
in the initial starting stage of their operation. Simply put, fluorescent starters are a timed
switch. The switch opens and closes until the fluorescent tube 'strikes' and lights-up.

2. How the white light is produced from the fluorescent lamp?

a. There are two ways to create white LEDs. The first is the "multi-chip method," in
which each of the three primary-color LEDs are combined, and the second is the
"one-chip method," which combines phosphor and a blue LED.

3. What is fluorescence?
a. Fluorescence is the emission of light by a substance that has absorbed light or other
electromagnetic radiation. It is a form of luminescence.

4. What type of switch is used in staircase wiring?

a. Staircase wiring connection using 2 two way switches and intermediate switch to
control a light point from three different places

5. What is the significance of staircase wiring?

a. The main purpose of two-way switching connection is to connect and control AC

appliances and equipment from two separate locations. It is mostly used in staircase
wiring where a light bulb can be control (Switch ON / Switch OFF) from different
places, no matter you are in the upper or lower portion of stair.

6. What is the advantage of godown wiring?

a. The advantage of the godown wiring is the previous load will be turned off when
we normally switch ON the next load. In godown wiring, the loads are not
controlled by a random switching. The user should follow a linear sequence in the
switching, from one end to another.
7. How many switches are required for godown wiring?
a. one SPST (Single pole single throw or single way) and two SPDT (Single pole double
throw or two way) switch.

8. What is the application of godown wiring?

a. Godown wiring circuit is needed in tunnel like structures, warehouses, long passages, big
godowns having lots of rooms and different portions. It was the best choice to save
electricity and energy consumption where only one load i.e. light bulb can be operate at a
time.

Post – Lab Questions
1. What is the function of choke in the fluorescent lamp?
a. The choke primarily serves to limit current flow to the correct level for the tube. It also
can be used during startup to provide an inductive 'kick' forming a momentary higher-
voltage pulse to start the lamp

2. What is the voltage developed at the time of starting in fluorescent lamp?

a. Fluorescent starters are a timed switch and it provides ignition voltage to the
fluorescent lamp. The ignition voltage is as high as 1000 V to initiate a discharge in
the gas lying between electrodes.

3. What type of circuit is used for fluorescent lamp wiring?

a. The semi-resonant start circuit was invented by Thorn Lighting for use with
fluorescent tubes. This method uses a double wound transformer and a capacitor.

4. What is the difference of direct and cross connections of staircase wiring?

a. The series circuit provides a single, continuous path through which current flows. In this
the devices are connected one after another and the current flows through them until it
returns to the power source. Hence, even when one device breaks down the
remaining devices will not operate because the circuit is broken. Whereas , In parallel
circuit the devices are connected side by side so that, current flows in a number
of parallel path. In this type of circuit each device is connected across the power source so
that even if one device breaks down, the other devices
continue to operate. Hence this type of circuit is used in home wiring.

5. What is series and parallel connection?

a. The basic idea of a “series” connection is that components are connected end-to-
end in a line to form a single path for electrons to flow: The basic idea of a
“parallel” connection, on the other hand, is that all components are connected
across each other's leads.

6. Why the switch is connected in series with the lamp?

a. If several lamps are connected in parallel each one has the full supply voltage across it.
The lamps may be switched on and off independently by connecting a switch in series
with each lamp as shown in the circuit diagram. This arrangement is used to control the
lamps in buildings.
