Narration: Hello, friends! Today we are going to talk about the book The One and

Only Ivan. This is the story about a silverback gorilla who lives inside a shopping
mall! Yes, a shopping mall! Ivan tells us the story of living in the mall and his friends
that live there with him.

Narration: We start this book in a mall called Big Top Mall. Ivan tells us about his
surroundings and his domain, which is made of glass on three sides, one of which
has a whole that he can fit his hand into. The fourth wall has a mural of a jungle
scene. Ivan tells us about his daily life living at the mall.

Narration: Ivan has a human friend in the mall named Julia (Her father cleans the
mall at night). She gave him crayons and paper so they could draw together. Ivan
enjoys drawing with Julia and draws simple things that are in his day-to-day life.
Mack (the boss) now sells Ivan’s drawings and Ivan draws everyday.

Narration: One day a shy baby elephant comes to live with Ivan and the other
animals that live at the mall. Her name is Ruby. After Ruby comes to the mall,
Stella, the other elephant that is there passes away. While Ruby is there she shares
her story of how she was captured from the wild with Ivan and the other animals
and Ivan shares his story with her too.

Narration: Before Stella passed away, Ivan made a promise to save Ruby. He
comes up with an idea of how to do that and gets to work using paints and paper
that Julia gave him. When he is finished with his paintings, he tries to show them to
Julia but she doesn’t understand. Ivan gets mad and Julia really looks at Ivan’s
work. She realizes it’s puzzle and starts putting the pieces together.

Narration: Julia and her father figure out the puzzle and glue it onto a billboard.
News channels see the billboard and come to film Ivan paint. While a cameraman is
there filming he catches a claw-stick, which is used in elephant training). Eventually,
a lady comes with boxes big enough to fit the animals in.
