1. What are these? Describe each and label its parts.

The picture above is the equipment and facility use for playing badminton. The badminton
racket is a piece of badminton equipment which has a handled frame and an open hoop where the
strings are tightly constructed. Shuttlecock or also called bird/birdie it has an open conical shape
formed by feathers or plastic embedded into rounded cork/rubber base. Badminton court it is
where players plays and has a 13.4m long and 6.1m wide size. Badminton net is the element that
divides the court into two equal parts and over which all shuttles must pass to continue a rally.

To Evaluate

Answer the following questions:

A. Why is it called badminton?

It is called badminton because it takes its name from Badminton House, the home of the
Duke of Beaufort in the English Country of Gloucestershire. In 1873, the Duke is credited with
bringing a version of the game, Poona, back from India and introducing it to his guests.

B. Badminton is also called

Battledore or battledore and shuttlecock.


Who is Isaac Spratt?
Isaac Spratt was a London toy dealer who wrote pamphlets describing the games of
croquet and badminton and was influential in the early development of both. In 1860, he printed
a pamphlet called ‘Badminton Battledore’ a description of the ancient game battledores and
shuttlecocks as played competitively at Badminton House, the Duke of Beaufort’s estate in
Gloucestershire, England.
