Introduction
Weather report: Ask the class about today’s weather.
Song: Play a warm-up song.
Warmer
 Tell children you are thinking of a sport. Ask them to put their hand up if they want to guess what it is. They have five
guesses.
 If a child guesses correctly, he/she thinks of another sport and continues the game.

Presentation
Describe the pictures. (Exercise 1)
 Look together at the main picture on p. 72 of the Student Book. Ask whether anyone has been to one of these places
(badminton courts).
 Ask one child to describe the main picture.
 Ask the class Do you know who this man is? What sport does he play? Discuss.
Read. (Exercise 2)
 Choose five children and ask each child to read one paragraph aloud to the class.
 Help with the pronunciation of any difficult words.
 Choose five different children and repeat.

Development
Read again. When did Minh decide to play badminton as a job? (Exercise 3)
 Ask the children to read the text again silently.
 Ask When did Minh decide to play badminton as a job? (when he was in high school).
 Help with pronunciation of difficult words.
Read again and answer. (Exercise 4)
 Ask the questions in turn. Give the children a few minutes to check the text if necessary.
 Go through the answers with the class.

1 Nguyen Tien Minh was born in Ho Chi Minh City.
2 He started playing badminton when he was ten years old.
3 He won the Malaysia Open Tournament in 2004.
4 He has won tournaments in (Malaysia), the U.S.A., Taiwan, Thailand, Australia, China, and Viet Nam.
5 Minh’s dream is to win a World Super series title before he finishes playing badminton.

 With books closed, say a true or false sentence about the text. If children think the sentence is true, they call out
True!; if they don’t, they call out False!
 Say these sentences:
Nguyen Thi Minh is a tennis player. (F)
He stared playing badminton when he was ten years old. (T)
Minh’s father asked him to play badminton because he wanted him to be a professional player. (F)
Minh decided to play in competitions when he finished school. (F)

Ask and answer. (Exercise 5)
 Discuss the questions with the class either as an open class activity or in small groups.

Project
Find photos or draw pictures of your favorite sports people. Talk about them. (Exercise 6)
 For homework, ask children to find or draw pictures of their favorite sports people.
 At the next lesson, ask a few children to talk about the people while showing the class their pictures.
 The remaining children then show their pictures to each other and talk about them.
