Choosing Childcare

Picking the right early childhood program for your child is an

important task. There are many choices for parents and guardians
and the process of making that decision can be complex. The choices
include family daycare, center based childcare, parent co-ops, and
public schools. These early childhood programs may be large or
small, profit or non-profit.

As each childcare program is different, so is each family seeking

care. A visit to several programs can help in the decision making
process. Ask as many questions as you need to, to ensure a good fit.

Please note that there are many licensed childcare providers in the
Upper Cape region offering childcare for infants, preschoolers, and
school-age children. For a current list, visit the Early Education &
Care website: www.mass.gov/topics/early-childhood-education-care

Things to keep in mind when choosing a provider:

Provider Qualifications (Education and Experience)
Hours of Operation
Policy for Holidays/Vacation
Food/Meals Provided
Nap time policies
Schedule of the activities
Outside Play
How the provider will communicate with parents/ guardians
Safety and Medical Policies
Cost and Payment Policies
Behavioral Management Policies

While your child is attending a program, it is essential to

communicate with the provider. Be sure to let them know how your
child is doing at home and how they are transitioning. If you have
any questions or concerns, be sure to address them immediately.

Be Prepared!
Would you be ready if there were an emergency?

#1 Get an Emergency Kit!

If disaster strikes your community, you might not have access to food,
water, or electricity for some time. By taking time now to prepare
emergency water supplies, food supplies and a disaster supplies kit, you
can provide for your entire family.

#2 Make an Emergency Plan!

Make plans with your family and friends in case you're not together
during an emergency. Discuss how you'll contact each other, where
you'll meet, and what you'll do in different situations. Read how to
develop a Family Disaster Plan at www.bt.cdc.gov/preparedness/plan OR
fill out the Homeland Security Family Emergency Plan at
www.ready.gov/emergency-planning-checklists

#3 Be Informed!
Being prepared means staying informed. Check all types of media—
websites, newspapers, radio, TV, mobile and land phones—for global,
national and local information. During an emergency, your local
Emergency Management Division will give you information on things
such as open shelters and evacuation orders.
