Setting up business
Starting a textile business is an interesting way to get involved in design, as
well as all the exciting things that can be made with dynamically designed fabrics.
Whether you are planning to create textiles for fashion design or modern home
furnishings, you will need to know a few things to start a successful business. By
arming yourself with the right knowledge and careful preparations, you can start
your small textile business off on the right foot.
Think about the types of textiles you want to make. Will you be doing screen
printing, dyeing or woven prints? This decision will have a significant impact on
your equipment costs. Keep your focus narrow for the initial start-up. According to
the Small Business Administration, “many businesses make the mistake of trying to
be everything to everybody.” Remember, you can always expand your operations if
your business is successful. Choose the type of textile production your market
analysis shows to have good potential for profitability.
Estimate your initial investment in equipment. Comparison shop for
equipment and workroom supplies. Look for textile equipment suppliers that offer
a good price, but also look for reliability. Do they offer solid warranties? Will your
supplier be readily available if equipment breaks down? Make a thorough list of
every piece of equipment and all the tools you will require to get started. Decide if
you will need financing. Aside from equipment costs, consider operating costs for
at least one year; it can take some time for a new business to become profitable.
Look for a location that fits your space and ventilation requirements. Some kinds of
textile production will involve toxic materials and all will involve dust and debris
from the fibers. Make sure the locations you are considering either have ventilation
or can be altered for installation of a ventilation system. Talk to property owners
about what type of lease terms they can offer. Ask whether utilities are included
and who will pay for repairs. Make sure the square footage available will be
enough for you to install and work comfortably with your equipment. Don’t forget
about storage space. Bulk fabrics often come in large rolls so you will need a place
to store them and heavy racks to mount the rolls for your use.

Vietnam's textile & garment export in the first 6 months of 2013

With its 120-year development history, Vietnam's textile and garment sector
has made important contributions to the economy. With over 2 million workers,
about a quarter of all industrial employment and more than 2,500 enterprises, the
textile and garment sector represents a key source of industrial employment,
especially for women, and is a leading industry for overall growth and
industrialization. Although purchasing power weakened and key import markets
like the US, EU and South Korea shrank, textile and garment exports from Vietnam
earned a record US$ 17.15 billion in 2012, registering an increase of 8.5% year-on-
year. This was the fourth year in a row the garment and textile industry took the
lead among the country’s exports, by revenue. Continuing the export growth in
2012, most of the major import markets for Vietnamese textiles and garments
products saw positive growth in the first six months of 2013. According to statistics
from the Vietnam National Textile and Garment Group, Vietnam's total export
revenue for this product group surpassed US$8.9 billion in the first half of 2013, an
increase of 14.5% over the same period last year.
The U.S market continued to top the list, buying up US$3.94 billion worth of
Vietnamese textiles and garment products during the first six months of 2013, up
12% year-on-year. Exports to the EU and Japan in the same six months also saw
significant increases of 18% and 24.5%, yielding revenues of US$1.29 billion and
US$1.1 billion, respectively. Exports to the EU currently account for nearly 15% of
the sector’s total volume, and the industry aims to raise exports to Japan to a
similar level. Imports to the South Korea grew faster than any other market at 32%,
with export value topping US$660 million, equating to 7.5% of the sector's total
shipments. The Korean market is expected to become the fourth largest destination
for Vietnamese textiles and garments by 2014. Total export revenue of more than
US$1 billion is forecast. In 2013, the world demand for garments and textiles is
forecast will increase slightly. Vietnam expects to maintain the export growth at 12
– 15% to reach US$18.8 - 19.3 billion. Thus, the garment - textile industry will
complete the targets of localization rate of over 50% and export revenue of US$20
billion set for 2015 ahead of time. It expects to earn US$8.5 billion from shipments
to US (up 11% year-on-year), US$2.4 billion to Japan (up 18%), US$1.5 billion to
South Korea (up 15%), US$2.4 billion to the EU, and US$4.2 billion to other
markets.

Plan Your Business

There will always be a need for clothing, and therefore for businesses that
supply them. However, the garment industry is highly competitive and divided into
myriad subspecialties. Imports from China, India, Mexico, Turkey and much of
Southeast Asia drive prices down for major competitors, who can afford to locate
overseas and ship to domestic markets. Therefore, when starting a garments
business, it is critical to determine what types of garments you will sell, whether
you will make or import them, who your competitors are and how you can keep
your costs low enough to be profitable.
1. Determine your product line. You may focus on evening wear, bathrobes,
or T-shirts, for example. If your goal is to work as a garments manufacturer, you
will need to have a specialized, high-quality skill set. For instance, you may be
designing and creating custom wedding gowns, high-end costumes or handcrafted
hats. Your business may also focus on repairing garments rather than creating
them.
2. Assess your competition. Unless your business is focused on garments
repair, you will be competing with both local retail and online stores. General
clothing items will face competition from the likes of Walmart, Amazon.com,
Nordstrom or the Gap, and established designers such as Donna Karan or Martha
Stewart. Evaluate each competitor on costs, price, marketing, distribution method
and suppliers.
3. Determine how you can serve your customers better than the competition.
It is unlikely that you will be able to compete with Walmart on price while starting
up a new venture. You may instead compete on excellent customer service,
customization, high-end design, convenience, or delivering specialty goods. In all
cases, focus your efforts so that you stand out from the rest.
4. Establish suppliers. Whether you are buying finished garments from a
factory in China or picking up one-of-a-kind antique ribbons for crafting high-end
lingerie, you must have a strong working relationship with your suppliers.
Investigate potential suppliers through your network, trade organizations and, if
necessary, online advertisements. Speak with representatives directly and ensure
that they can consistently meet your orders.
5. Obtain financing. You may need a small business loan or an investor such
as a friend or family member. Budget enough to pay not only for your supplies, but
also for any legal fees, licensing fees, insurance and wages.
6. Market your business. You should start marketing even before you have
products available to sell, since it takes time to persuade customers to look at your
products. Determine which media outlets your customers are most likely to listen
to, then advertise on those channels. A website is a necessity. Craft your message
and speak directly to your target customers. Let them know exactly how you can
meet their needs.
7. Import or create an inventory. It takes practice and industry expertise to
stock the most efficient inventory. Your goal should be to have as few garments in
inventory as possible while still giving your customers instant access to their
choices.
