SCARCITY OF WATER IN THE RIVER
The Falgu river is mainly a subterranean river, with most
of the its water running below the surface of the ground.
Except during the monsoon season the level of water in
the river varies from negligible to 2 feet. Thus during the
Chatt puja this factor causes a hindrance to the devotees.
By digging into the ground the subterranean river water is
dug up for this purpose.

the time of Chatt Puja, agglomerating to a
footfall of around 1 lakh people in about a
stretch of 12km of the Ghat. In the stretch of
the ghat considered as our site the maximum
number of people convening at the time o
Chatt will be approximately around 75000.
Thus our design had to take into consider-
ation the large amount of people arriving at a
concentrated spot, and the fact that their
activities might not be hampered.

less transitional, in between
spaces which remain in back-
drop to highlight or connect with
the primary functional bound-
aries. The design programme
intends to explore, identify,and
reinterpret the liminal space
in the respective context With
a Vision to inform a society.

C O N C E P T :
Architecture generates its pres-
ence when its creator does not
really make a deliberate effort
to do the same but modest-
ly underlines the already pres-
ent through it. Such is the pow-
er of such architecture that we
do not even recognize their
while existence Using them.

B E T W I X T :
we chose a tea stall and its surroundings in one
of the cultural hotspots of kolkata, the space
between Nandan theatre complex and the
academy of fine arts, a place where struggling
artists spend most of their time having tea and
engaging in cultural discourse, looking for work
in fliers pasted near the tea stall. The tea stall
also provides a purpose to the people that is
called the ‘ADDA’ and an outdoor cultural
activity develops around it surrounded by guitar,
harmonium, canvas, paintbrushes, colours and
the people who lives with it. But later forget the
space when become rich they and Successful.
The proposal was to enliven the space with in-
stallations, interaction spaces and sculptures that
celebrate the liminality of the tea stall in time.
