Series SS40 316L Stainless Steel Fittings
Scope of Specification: Series SS40 Type 316L stainless steel pipe fittings manufactured by LOKRINGTM. Pressure-temperature ratings
of qualified fittings, and matching pipe sizes (NPS) and schedules detailed in Tables 1 and 2 of this specification. Fitting configurations
and dimensions are detailed in LOKRINGTM product catalogs. Installation tool envelope dimensions, and minimum fit-up dimensions are
provided in LOKRINGTM Installation Procedure Lp-105. For installation procedures, and selection of installation tooling, see Installation
Procedure LP-105. Fittings are designed for stainless steel pipe to ASTM-A312, and for other pipe materials of comparable strength and
ductility (Note 2).
Material of Construction: Fitting bodies and swage rings are manufactured for corrosion resistant steel type 316L (UNS designation
S31603). Physical and mechanical properties of bar stock material conform to ASTM A276 or A479, and to LOKRINGTM material
specifications LMS 90-03 or LMS 95-15. Physical and mechanical properties of tube stock material conform to ASTM A511, and to
LOKRINGTM material specification LMS 92-11, LMS 96-18 or LMS 99-23. Fittings are fabricated using Schedule 40 butt weld fittings to
ANSI B16.9 and ASTM A403 WP/W. LOKRINGTM flanges are fabricated using forged weld neck flanges to ANSI/ASME B 16.5 Sch 40
bore.

Note 1: Piping systems containing the piping assembles listed may establish design pressures up to and including the ambient maximum
design pressure given for temperatures from -20 to 100 degrees F for ASME B31.1, and from -325 to 100 degrees F for ASME
B31.3 (based on allowable stresses for the matching pipe of 18,000 psi and 20,000 psi respectively). For methodology used to
develop maximum design pressures in accordance with ASME codes, see Reference Qualification Document, available on
request. For temperature derating factor listed in Table 2. Interpolation between derating factors is permitted.
Note 2: Qualified matching pipe shall conform to seamless or electric resistance welded (ERW) constructions of ASTM-A312. All pipe
shall be furnished in the heat-treated condition as per ASTM A312/A312M. Pipe shall be of high quality, fully annealed
construction with maximum Rockwell B scale hardness of 90. Fittings may also be installed on carbon steel pipe to ASTM A53
or A106 provided the dimensional and physical properties meet the requirements of qualified stainless steel pipe. The designer
should evaluate the potential for galvanic corrosion between the carbon steel pipe and stainless steel fitting for the contemplated
application, and should limit the maximum rated temperature of the carbon steel pipe. SS40 series fittings should not be installed
on galvanized pipe used for flammable or process services.
Discontinuities as the longitudinal weld seam of ERW pipe can provide a leak path if not removed or sealed. Poor longitudinal
welding can result in a visible depression (or suck back): poor longitudinal fittings on ERW pipe in which the weld bead has been
drawn or sanded smooth, and is not visible to the naked eye. If the required surface conditions cannot be met, the use of
anaerobic sealant, such as Loctite® PST sealant (given process compatibility), is suggested.
Note 3: XXX designates fitting configuration: CPL = Coupling; TEE = Straight Leg Tee; EL90 = 90°Elbow. See product catalogs for
available configurations.
Note 4: The methodology used to establish the stress intensification factor, I, use of B31.1 thermal expansion and B31.3 displacement
stress-range calculations is outlined in the Reference Qualification Document, available on request. The stress intensification
thus determined means that the LOKRINGTM fitting/matching assembly will normally survive 7,000 fully reversing flexural
cycles with the matching pipe nominal stress equal to the pipe material yield strength.
