Element is a pure substance that cannot be separated into simpler substances by physical means (or methods).
Compounds are pure substances composed of two or more different elements that are chemically combined.

Instructions: Using a Venn diagram, compare and differentiate elements and compounds, you can give
examples of each.

Chlorine (Cl) Sodium Chloride (NaCl)

Instructions: Identify what are the elements found in each compound.

Compound Element composition Uses of compound

A.Water (H2O) Example: Hydrogen (H)  all the things you do at home: drinking,
Oxygen (O) preparing food, bathing, washing clothes and
dishes, brushing your teeth

B. Carbon Dioxide (CO2) 6. Carbon (C)  is used as a refrigerant, in fire extinguishers,

Oxygen (O) for inflating life rafts and life jackets, blasting
coal, foaming rubber and plastics, promoting
the growth of plants in greenhouses,
immobilizing animals before slaughter, and in
carbonated beverages.

C. Salt (NaCl) 8. Sodium (Na)  used for flavoring and for preserving food.
Chlorine (Cl)  It has also been used in tanning, dyeing and
bleaching, and the production of pottery, soap,
and chlorine. Today, it is widely used in the
chemical industry.

D. Vinegar (C2H4O2) 10. Carbon (C)  You can use vinegar to clean your microwave;
Hydrogen (H) remove grease; remove mold, mildew, and
Oxygen (O) mineral deposits; clean carpeting;
 as a furniture polish; remove stains on clothing;
remove crayon marks; clean stainless steel;
clean window blinds; remove copper and brass
tarnish; clean glass; and
 use it as a CD cleaner.
E. Sugar (C6H12O6) 12. Carbon (C)  The most important among these are that
Hydrogen (H) added sugar in foods acts as a sweetener,
Oxygen (O) preservative, texture modifier, fermentation
substrate, flavouring and colouring agent,
bulking agent.

F. Baking Soda (NaHCO3) 14. Sodium (Na)  Sodium bicarbonate, also known as baking
Hydrogen (H) soda, is used to relieve heartburn, sour
Carbon (C ) stomach, or acid indigestion by neutralizing
Oxygen (O) excess stomach acid.
 When used for this purpose, it is said to belong
to the group of medicines called antacids.

Instructions: You have learned the similarities and differences between elements and compounds. On the
space before each item, write T if the statement is TRUE and F if the statement is FALSE.
