COMPONENT:
The main function of a connecting rod is to convert linear motion of piston to rotary motion
of crank. It is the main component of an internal combustion (IC) engine and is the most
heavily stressed part in the engine. During its operation various stresses are acting on
connecting rod. The influence of compressive stress is more in connecting rod due to gas
pressure and whipping stress.

ANALYSIS OF THE DESIGN:


LATTICE STRUCTURE AND OPTIMIZATION:
Replacing solid structures with lattice structure is a way enabled by additive
manufacturing (AM) to realize part lightweight design. Conventional design optimization
method based on homogeneous periodic lattice structure cannot achieve the optimal
structure without taking the stress magnitude and orientation into account.
PROPOSED MODEL:
Lattice structures with different desired physical properties are promising for a broad spectrum
of applications. Sizes of struts are optimized by a bidirectional evolutionary structural
optimization-based algorithm with certain manufacturing constraints. Result shows that
optimized heterogeneous lattice structures can improve the stiffness of the model compared to
the homogeneous lattice structure and the original design. Effects like the Von-Mises stress
and the maximum displacement can be reduced without increasing the weight of designed
part.

Comparison shows that the weight the of the model dropped from 754.17 g to 365.97 g.
That means around 51% weight reduction is achieved without much affecting the
strength of the model. Analysis can be done and verified that the model after insertion
of lattice structure can withstand similar stress having an advantage of less weight over
the original component.
