Overview

DRILLING SOLUTIONS 1
Hydraulic Bit Basket Overview

Description
The Hydraulic Bit Basket Kit adds a sliding bit basket mechanism to the PV-270 tower and
extends the breakout base to accommodate the basket. Instead of manually inserting and
removing a bit basket for every bit change, the sliding basket reduces manual labor and
downtime by staying on the tower. The basket mechanism design maintains the “slap”
breakout functionality.
The sliding basket movement is driven by link arms attached to a hydraulic cylinder. The
basket cylinder ties into the deck fork hydraulic circuit. A selector valve provides the operator
with independent control of the basket and deck fork by shifting between the functions. A
momentary switch on the left side of the operator chair shifts the selector valve to the bit basket
control. When switched to bit basket control, the deck fork in/out buttons located on the right
side of the chair control the bit basket. Since the bit basket uses the fork hydraulic circuit and
software control, the rig must meet the same conditions needed for the fork (such as drill
mode) to move the bit basket.
The sliding bit basket consists of a generic basket and an insert. The inserts are specific to
various bit sizes and types and fit into the generic basket. Both are designed to remain in the
tower but are not designed for storage. Do not store bits, or other items, in the bit basket.
A counterbalance valve prevents the basket and linkage from drifting and damage, such as
from interfering with the deck bushing feeding up with the bit during bit change.

Safety
Safety must be the main concern for anyone working on or around the drill. Do not perform
any function that could put someone in danger.

! WARNING

Read and understand the Safety First Manual located in the drill before
attempting the procedures described in this supplement. Obey all safety
precautions and guidelines before operating or performing any
maintenance, service, or repairs on the drill.

Always wear the correct safety gear while working on or around the drill.
This includes an approved hard hat, safety glasses, steel toe shoes,
gloves, respirator, and ear protection. Do not wear loose fitting clothing
that can become caught in rotating components.

Never leave a bit or any other object in the bit basket. The bit basket is not
meant for storage. Objects left in the bit basket can fall out during
tramming or tower movement causing injury to personnel or damage to
equipment.

Make sure that all the bit basket insert retaining pins and all other bit
basket pin retaining rings are installed and secure. If not installed and
secured correctly, these items can fall during tramming or tower
movement and cause injury to personnel or damage to equipment.

Make sure the bit basket is fully stowed when not in use. Interfering parts
will cause damage.

Operating and maintaining RCS4 drills requires special training through

Atlas Copco. Do not attempt to drill, operate, repair, or perform
maintenance on the drill if you are not trained or experience with the
RCS4 drill operating system controls and programs.

Hydraulic Bit Basket Installation

Pre-Installation Requirements
Perform the following steps prior to installing the Hydraulic Bit Basket Kit.

1. Wash the machine, paying close attention to the breakout table and bottom of
the tower.
2. Remove all drill pipe from the drill or rack it in the carousel.

Installation
Use the following procedure to modify the original PV-270 sliding fork base and install the
Hydraulic Bit Basket.

NOTE: Refer to the drawing included in the Hydraulic Bit Basket Kit for
more details.

Remove the Breakout Base Retainer Ring

Use the following procedure to remove the breakout base retainer ring.

1. Set the tower to the highest angle setting and lock the angle package pins.
2. Lockout/tagout the drill in accordance with local procedures.
3. Remove the locking ring.

NOTE: Take care to not damage the breakout base if it is to be used as a

spare. The ring cannot be reused.

Figure 2: Locking Ring

4. Make sure all weld and slag is removed from the outside diameter of the
breakout base location spigot for easy removal of the base assembly.

5. Remove the lockout/tagout from the drill.

6. Unlock the tower and set it to 90 degrees.
7. Lock the tower in position.
8. Make sure the sliding fork is retracted.
9. Lockout/tagout the drill in accordance with local procedures.

Remove the Sliding Fork Base Assembly

Use the following procedure to remove the sliding fork base assembly from the drill.

1. Remove the retaining pins and sliding deck fork.

Hydraulic Bit Basket Operation

! WARNING

Do not stand or work directly under the drill pipe or put hands and fingers
in pinch points. Serious injury can occur.

NOTICE

When operating a drill that has the optional hydraulic bit basket installed,
the same preconditions should be observed as when operating a drill that
does not have the hydraulic bit basket. These preconditions include the
rig is level and the tower is vertical and locked. Refer to the PV-270 Series
RCS4 Instruction Manual for more details.

The following procedure is for installing the tricone drill bit on the starter rod, stabilizer (option),
or directly onto the drill pipe.

1. Make sure the basket is fully stowed.

2. Rack all drill pipes (if applicable).
3. Slowly feed up the last drill pipe with the bit attached until the bit is above the
table and higher than the bit basket.
4. Press and hold the Bit Basket selector switch to activate the bit basket controls.

7. Slowly feed down the drill pipe and rotate it as necessary to set the bit in the
basket.
8. Break the bit loose (refer to the PV-270 Series RCS4 Instruction Manual for
more details).
9. Raise the drill pipe above the bit.
10. Hold the Bit Basket selector switch to activate the bit basket controls.
11. Press and hold the Deck Fork Retract button until the bit basket slides into the
stowed state.
12. Release the Deck Fork Retract button and Bit Basket selector switch.
13. Remove the old bit from the basket.
14. Load the new bit into the basket and grease the threads.
15. Repeat steps 4, 5, and 6.
16. Slowly feed down and rotate the drill pipe until the bit is fully threaded and
tightened.
17. Feed up the drill pipe until the bit is above the table and clear of the basket.
18. Repeat steps 10, 11, and 12 to stow the basket.
19. Resume normal operation.

Maintenance

! DANGER

Lockout/tagout the drill in accordance with local practices. Failure to do

so could result in injury or death to personnel performing maintenance
on the drill. Only perform maintenance when the drill is shut off and
isolated. Refer to the PV-270 Series RCS4 Instruction Manual for more
details.

Manually grease the link arm pins as needed with AC Grease 130, which is the same grease
as used elsewhere on the drill. When greasing the pins, also inspect the linkage, basket, pins,
and retaining devices to make sure that all parts are properly secured.
