3 We use speech to tell
somebody else what somebody said without using
exactly the same words.

3 Look at these sentences from the video. Underline
one word in each sentence which we can omit
without changing the meaning of the sentence.
1 Direct speech: ‘I hope that children of all ages will
love my new book.’
2 Reported speech: He told us that he hoped children
of all ages would love his new book.
4 Complete the gaps or circle the correct
alternatives in the rules for reported speech.
1 The tense of the verb changes, e.g. from the present
simple to the simple.
2 The possessive adjective changes, e.g. my changes
to .
3 We change will to .
4 The pronoun changes, e.g. I changes to
.
5 With say/tell, we always include a person, e.g. me,
him, etc. but with say/tell we don’t.
6 With both say and tell, we can use .
But we can also omit it.
