installation in hazardous areas shall use copper free aluminium. Fans shall be bi-
directional unless uni-directional fans are necessary to achieve particular performance
criteria (e.g. noise).
The cooling system must guarantee the normal operation of the motor without exceeding
the maximum allowable temperature rise indicated as within the IEC 60034-1 standard,
as a function of the insulating class of the windings.

5.3 Rotor

The Shaft ends shall have threaded holes to facilitate the assembly or removal of
couplings and bearings etc.
The rotor and internal fans, if fitted, shall be dynamically balanced with the keyways fully
filled with half keys. The vibration class shall be equal to grade ‘R’ in accordance with

balancing. The balancing material shall be secured to ensure it does not become loose
during the lifetime of the motor.

5.4 Bearings

combinations are permissible. Bearings shall have cages suitable for high speed
running.
Lubrication shall be by lithium based or polyurea grease. The grease shall be suitable
for use over the specified operating temperature range.
Where non-sealed for life bearings are required, they shall be constructed to allow
greasing without stopping the motor. If required, bearing grease nipples shall be located
at the edge of the stator frame and connected to the bearing with small-bore pipe. A
protective cap shall be provided over the nipple.
The non-sealed for life bearings shall positively eject excess grease from the bearing to
the outside of the motor. This shall prevent the formation of a skin, which can prevent
grease from reaching the rolling elements. The bearing manufacturer shall approve the
whole design.
Bearings shall have a nominal life L10 (ISO 281) calculated with the machine operating
under rated conditions of at least 30,000 hours in the case of direct coupling and without

least 40,000 hours calculated in accordance with ISO 281. The calculation shall take full
account of internally generated forces, with the worst aggregate of dimensional
tolerances permitted during manufacture.
The driven equipment manufacturer will supply details of external forces under all
operating conditions for vertical motors to the motor manufacturer.
Motors will not normally be required to absorb thrust from driven equipment.
Manufacturers shall state the permissible end float of horizontal motors. A mark shall be
provided on the shaft and corresponding bearing housing showing the electrical
magnetic centre of the machine.
Vertically mounted motors, rigidly connected to equipment producing axial loads, shall
be designed to carry all transmitted thrust loads, at all operating conditions, whilst
maintaining specified bearing life. Thrust bearings shall be at the non-drive end of the
motor. Stacked bearings are not acceptable.
If horizontal motors are to be operated in the vertical position, then they shall be certified
(in writing) for use with the thrust loading. Shielded bearings shall only be permitted if
the grease chamber is on top of the bearing when the motor is in its operating position.
All motors, except explosion proof motors, shall have shaft seals. The seals shall be
suitable for the environment specified. Any special requirements will be identified on the
Data Sheet.
Provision shall be made, in accordance with his standard practice, to prevent damage
to bearings by shaft currents. If necessary, the non-drive end bearing shall be insulated.
Provision shall be made to measure the bearing insulation resistance of insulated
bearings without dismantling the motor or removing it from its base.
Bearing vibration monitoring shall be provided when specified in the driven equipment

switchboard, to reduce the starting current, and hence the voltage drop seen at the
switchboard.
Motor starting torque shall be Type ‘N’ in compliance with IEC 60034-12. Motor torque

Phase 1
LOW VOLTAGE INDUCTION MOTOR SPECIFICATION

Motors shall be suitable for restarting against a residual voltage of 100% nominal voltage
180° out of phase with the supply voltage.
The CA reserves the right to request supply of the following data:-
• Run up time of motor and loaded driven equipment at 100% and 80% of the rated
voltage.
• The allowable run up time of motor at 100% and 80% of rated voltage, starting direct
on line with the motor already at full load working temperature. These are required for
use with the motor protection relays.
NOTE: The allowable run up time of the motor is, “The time for a motor to complete
one start at the specified terminal voltage when coupled to a load with the
actual running up characteristics, but with the maximum moment of inertia so
that when full speed is reached the most critical part of the motor has reached
the highest permissible temperature.”

6.5 Voltage Considerations

Motors shall be capable of running without damage at 80% volts for the following periods
of time:-
• Starting at normal running temperature: 30 seconds
• Starting at ambient temperature: 5 minutes

6.6 Variable Speed Drive Considerations

Motors intended for variable speed applications shall be designed to ensure that there
is no overheating at the design minimum speed and shall also be in compliance with
ATEX Directive 94 / 9 / EC or IECEX. The driven equipment manufacturer will provide
power and torque required throughout the entire speed range.
Motors intended for variable speed applications in hazardous areas shall be Ex de
certified.
The insulated bearing may be required to prevent the high frequency circulating current
in shaft.

7.1 General

Special motors are subject to the CA’s approval.

7.2 Glandless Pump Motors

Glandless pump motors of the type where the pumped liquid is present in the motor (e.g.
canned pumps), shall incorporate safety devices to ensure the operation is prevented
unless the unit is filled and the temperature is below the permissible maximum. The

system shall be considered as a unit.

7.3 Submersible Pump Motors

Submersible pump motors and other ‘wet stator’ designs shall include motor winding
high temperature protection where this is a manufacturer’s standard. Undercurrent
protection may be recommended in these cases.

10 NOISE LIMITS

The sound pressure level at 1 metre distance in any direction from the package unit shall be
below that stated on the motor Data Sheets. This limit shall be attained by design.
CA approval is required for any acoustic abatement measures necessary to ensure that the
