SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT – Assignment Questions

Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

1. List present methods of solid waste disposal; briefly explain merits and demerits of each
method?
2. Briefly explain the scope and importance of solid waste management.
3. Define integrated solid waste management system. Discuss the impacts of improper solid waste
management on environment.
4. With the help of flow diagram explain functional elements of solid waste management.
Chapter 2
SOURCES
1. List and explain sources of solid waste.
2. List physical composition of municipal solid waste and explain the importance of each with
typical composition.
i) Individual components
ii) Moisture content
iii) Density
iv) Particle size
3. List and explain types of solid waste generated from each source.
4. List and explain the importance of chemical composition of municipal solid waste.
5. Explain methods used to determine generation rate.
6. List and explain the factors affecting generation rate.
7. Estimate the moisture content and density of solid waste sample using the given data.
Sl no Components % mass Moisture content Density(kg/m3)
(%)
1 Food waste 12 70 290
2 Paper 40 6 85
3 Card board 8 5 50
4 Plastic 4 2 65
5 Glass 15 60 105
6 Wood 5 20 240
7 Others 16 3 90

8. Estimate the energy content of the given solid waste sample with the following composition.
Energy given in KJ/kg. assume moisture content=21%, ash=5%,. Also calculate the energy content
on dry basis and discarded basis.
Sl no Components Solid waste Energy content
(KJ/kg)
1 Food waste 15 4650

4 Plastic 10 32600
5 Garden trimmings 10 6500
6 Wood 5 18600
7 Tin cans 5 700

9. Estimate moisture content, density, energy content of a typical solid waste with average
composition data. On dry basis and ash free basis. Take ash content=5%. Assume heating value
calculated as on discarded basis. (If given dry basis calculate dry basis and multiply with solid
waste.)
