Activity 4.1

“Plate Motion Simulation”

Objective:

To understand the changes that happens to the boundaries after millions of years

Procedure:

Do simulations of the types of boundaries here:

https://sepuplhs.org/middle/iaes/students/simulations/sepup_plate5.html

Observe the changes that occurred through time. What can you say about the:

A. Convergent boundary after 5 million years?

As continental crust subducts, melts, and becomes magma at convergent
boundaries, oceanic crust is destroyed. Convergent plate movement causes
earthquakes and frequently builds volcanic chains.

B. Transform boundary after 20 million years?

Shallow earthquakes, substantial lateral rock displacement, and a vast zone of
crustal deformation emerge from the grinding action between the plates at a
transform plate boundary. The San Andreas Fault in western California is
perhaps the most striking example of such a terrain on the planet.

C. Divergent boundary after 20 million years?

When two tectonic plates move away from each other, they form a diverging
border. Earthquakes are prevalent along these boundaries, and magma (molten
rock) rises to the surface from the Earth's mantle, solidifying to form new oceanic
crust. Divergent plate boundaries can be seen in the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.

D. What can be formed from a bent transform boundary after 20 million years?
Trenches.

10 – Divergent Boundary (upwelling of magma from the mantle creates

new ocean floor)

c. Destroy sea floor

12 – Convergent Boundary (subduction)

2. What are the three sub-types of convergent plate boundaries?

Oceanic – Oceanic Convergence

Oceanic – Continental Convergence
