OBJECTIVES:
This lab experiment has been designed to verify the Maximum Power Transfer Theorem in AC Circuits.
Part 1
The goal of this part is to determine the impact of resistive impedance of load on average power transfer.
Part 2
The goal of this part is to determine the impact of reactive impedance of load on average power transfer.
INTRODUCTION:
The maximum average power transfer theorem for sinusoidal steady state is: 𝑍𝑍 =𝑍𝑍𝑍∗
Thevenin and load impedances in terms of resistive and reactive components as:
𝑍𝑍𝑍+𝑍𝑍 𝑍𝑍=𝑍𝑍𝑍𝑍𝑍−𝑍𝑍𝑍𝑍𝑍𝑍
The average power delivered to the load is:
𝑍= 𝑍𝑍𝑍^2 𝑍𝑍𝑍𝑍𝑍^2⁄(𝑍𝑍𝑍+𝑍𝑍𝑍𝑍𝑍)^2+(𝑍𝑍𝑍+𝑍𝑍𝑍𝑍𝑍)
For maximum power = 𝑍𝑍𝑍 , 𝑍𝑍𝑍𝑍𝑍=−𝑍𝑍𝑍
Maximum average power is calculated as: 𝑍𝑍 𝑍𝑍 =𝑍𝑍𝑍^2/8 𝑍𝑍𝑍
Where 𝑍𝑍𝑍 𝑍𝑍𝑍ℎ𝑍 𝑍𝑍𝑍𝑍 𝑍𝑍𝑍𝑍𝑍 𝑍𝑍𝑍𝑍𝑍𝑍𝑍𝑍𝑍 𝑍𝑍𝑍𝑍𝑍𝑍𝑍𝑍𝑍𝑍𝑍𝑍𝑍.
TASK NO 1:
Simulations:
Capacitor=25uf
Capacitor=10uF
RESULTS:
We measured the values of voltages and currents across the load and calculated the power by changing
the values of capacitor while keeping the resistance constant. The maximum value of the power was
found at 25uF capacitor.
TASK NO 2:
Change the value of load Resister:
Simulations:
Resistor=100Ω
Resister=50Ω

RESULTS:
We measured the values of voltages and currents across the load and also calculated the power by
changing the values of the resistances and keeping the value of capacitor constant. The maximum value of
power was across 100 ohm resistance

1. Comment on the sharpness of the maximum of the power curves. Is it necessary to match with
great care to achieve maximum power transfer?
When we talk about the depth of the field we actually talk about the region which objects appear sharp i.e.
whose image is blur and so small that it is not noticeable. Maximum power is achieved when load is equal
to thevenin impedance of circuit. Yes, it is necessary to obtain our max power with great care. If our load
is not equal to thevenin impedance we can’t obtain maximum power.
2. What is the phase difference between the voltage and current source when the maximum power
transfer is achieved?
The phase difference between voltage and current is 0 degrees as both are in phase when maximum power
transferred is achieved.
3. If the frequency of the source is doubled, what change should be done to maintain maximum
power transfer to the load? How this change does effects the value of the current? Explain.
With the change in frequency there would be no change in the maximum power transfer it is verified by
the following formula:
Pmax=Vsp^2/8Rth.
4. The term available power is used to describe a source in many communication applications .It is
the maximum possible power which the source can deliver to an external load. What is the available
power of a source voltage V and internal resistance R?
If the internal resistance of the source is equal to the thevenine resistance and voltage applied at V.
The maximum/available power will be:
Pmax=Vsp^2/8Rth.
