Residency Requirement
Note: Please note that teams should be formed prior to residency weekend and send them the file noting
the requirements for the assignments due the residency weekend.

Sample residency project (16- week course only):
Friday: 5pm – 10pm- (no lunch break): Set the stage for operational excellence by reviewing prior
chapters and answering questions – 1-hour lecture /review.
Discuss: Key things to think about in operational effectiveness, resource excellency and how it relates to
operational excellence, and answer any questions prior to introducing the project for the weekend.
Start the project for residency weekend:
Break up the class into teams (3-5 people per team)
Project:  You are starting a new company and want to ensure organizational success through operational
efficiency and strategic vision.  The plan for this project is to understand where there is a need in the
market to create a new product/ service, understand the components that need to be addressed or
factored when managing operational efficiencies (to include resource management), and present the work
as though asking for approval to proceed with the project.  Friday we will start the basic research and find
an organization to create and market, Saturday the team will work on the paper, Sunday the paper will be
finalized and the presentation will be completed.
Before the class leaves for the evening, they must select an organization and create a one-page overview
noting the following information:
Your task tonight is to determine where there is a gap in the market or area for a niche market can note:
1. The market, the name of the company, why you feel as though there is a niche or area for you to
succeed in the market.
2. Research other companies in the same market and note why they aren't providing the services
you are offering and contrast them to the goods or services your company is going to offer.
Present the information to the class with a 2-5-minute short presentation.  The class will have 2-5 minutes
after each presentation to ask any questions or offer suggestions for the project.
Friday format/ agenda:
5pm-6:00pm – introductions, workshop discussion/lecture
6pm-6:15pm – introduce the project and ask if there are any questions
6:15- 9:00pm – teams complete their analysis, research, and presentation
9:00- 10pm – team presentations and question/ answer session.
Saturday: 8am – 7:30pm with 1 ½ hour lunch break:

Saturday- start the class with answering any questions.


Discuss the major components required in the operational efficiency plan:
 Business Plan
 How will you obtain funds for the project?  (are you asking for funds or
obtaining from another source)
 How many funds are required to start?
 What is the timeframe to launch?
 Resource requirements
 Hardware
 Software
 Other support IT to get the systems up and
running (networking, database, etc…)
 People
 Equipment
 Office Space
 Etc…
o Key concepts to address to ensure the organization is running efficiently
 Organizational Learning Concepts and Theories
 Integration of IT Resources
 Virtual Teams? Local Teams?  Why?
 Ethical and Legal Implications
 Cyber Security and Privacy of Information
 What do you have to account for? 
(managing data or credit card information?)
 Best Practices that you are going to implement in your organization and why
o Summary and Next Steps
The teams need to work efficiently and must assign a team lead and team responsibilities – who is
responsible for each aspect of the project.  This must be turned in prior to starting any work – the
professor must approve prior to completing any additional work.
The above paper must be at least 10 pages in length.  This does not include the APA formatted cover
page or the references.  There must be at least 6 APA references to support the findings in the
submission.
Saturday format/agenda:
8-9am – answer any questions from the previous evening.  Discuss the major components of the project
and the deliverables.  Note that the team responsibilities document is due by 9:30am. 
9am-930: Team’s work on responsibility document and submit to professor
930-12 – Team’s work on project
12 – 130 – Lunch Break
130 – 700– Team’s continue to work on project
700-730 – Team’s ask any questions /Wrap up for the evening
Sunday: 8am – 1:30pm (no lunch breaks):
Sunday – start the class with answering any questions.  Discuss the paper and presentation due dates
and times.
Sunday format /agenda:
8-900 – answer any questions from the previous day.  Discuss the presentation deliverables. Note that
the paper must be completed and turned in by 11:30 today.
900-1130 – Team’s complete paper and submit to professor.
1130 – 1230 – Team’s complete presentation deck.
1230 – 130 – Team’s present presentation to students.
130- Adjourn
