What is Informative writing?

● Writing that is designed to inform the reader about the topic.

● It is sometimes called expository or explanatory writing that uses evidence and information from
credible sources to support a focused and logical explanation of the topic at hand.
● When it comes to structure, an informative essay follows the same basic principles as argumentative
writing; the main difference between the two is the purpose.

What is persuasive writing?

● Persuasive writing uses logic and reason to show that one idea is more legitimate than another.
● It attempts to persuade a reader to adopt a certain point of view or to take a particular action.
● It blends facts and emotion in attempt to convince the reader that the writer is “right” (often relies
heavily on opinion).

What is argumentative writing?

● It uses logic and evidence to build a case for a specific claim. Science and law use argumentation.
● It offers the reader relevant reasons, credible fact, and sufficient evidence to support that the writer
has a valid and worthy perspective.

Activity

Directions: Determine whether the following paragraph is informative, persuasive or argumentative. Then,
write at least 3 sentences as explanation to support your answer.

1. Although I disagree with much that those who oppose animal testing say, I fully endorse their final
conclusion that there are many better alternatives to animal testing. The Food and Drug Administration
has stated that they support the development and use of alternatives to animal testing. Moreover many
scientists have developed methods to test cosmetics and other personal products that are faster,
cheaper and more accurate than traditional animal testing. In other words there are better alternatives
to animal testing and the FDA agrees. Some readers may challenge the view that animal testing can
be done away with. After all many believed that it is impossible to eliminate the need for animals in
research. Nonetheless , my discussion of alternatives to animal testing is in fact addressing the larger
issue of choice. If we don’t need to use animals, why should we?

2. Smoking is regarded as a fashion symbol in young boys. Despite the ill effects of smoking, people
still continue to smoke. Many young boys, who start smoking, feel that they look broadminded and
liberated if they smoke. Most often, the teenagers adopt this habit just because of the company they
enjoy. Sometimes, they take a puff from their friend’s cigar. Later on, they develop the habit of smoking
as an indispensable part of their lives. With the passage of time, the followers of this bad habit turn into
chain smokers. It must be kept in mind that smoking is a toxic habit that may develop lungs’ cancer.
Moreover, the other toxic chemicals like arsenic, carbon Monoxide, methane, acetic acid, nicotine,
butane and cadmium present in cigarettes are also highly damaging for health.

3. A lot of people, especially young people, go through the day without having breakfast. Many people
believe that it is not necessary, or they say that they don’t have time for that, and begin their day with
no meal. I believe that everyone should eat breakfast before going to their activities. The purpose of
this paper is to show the importance of breakfast, especially for students.
The first reason why you should eat breakfast before going to school is for your health. When you skip
breakfast and go to school, you are looking for a disease because it’s not healthy to have an empty
stomach all day long. It’s very important to have a meal and not let your stomach work empty. All you
are going to get is gastritis and a lot of problems with your health if you don’t eat breakfast.
Another reason for eating breakfast is because you need food to do well in your classes. Your body
and your brain are not going to function as good as they could because you have no energy and no
strength. When you try to learn something and have nothing in your stomach, you are going to have
a lot of trouble succeeding. A lot of people think that they should not eat because they are going to
feel tired, but that’s not true. Breakfast is not a very big meal, and on the contrary, you’re going to feel
tired if you don’t have breakfast because you have spent the entire previous night without food.

Speaking effectively is defined as speaking in such a way that your message is clearly heard and, if
possible, acted upon. There are two main elements to speaking effectively: what you say, and how you say
it.

What is a Persuasive Speech? - A speech given to change audience attitudes and behavior on specific
topic or subject. It has to be presented with information collected from different sources, in order to persuade.

What is an Informative Speech? - A speech given to increase knowledge on specific topic or subject and
can be presented with or without persuasion.

Goodwill speech is both informative and persuasive. The speaker seeks to persuade his audience to
consider him favorably and who or what he represents. The speech highlights shared values, customs,
beliefs, and morals. It does not make assumptions or judgments about the audience and does not intimidate,
embarrass, or offend them.

2
Pointers in Writing a Speech of Goodwill
1. Identify the purpose of your speech. What is the purpose of my speech, is it to motivate or persuade
the audience? Is it an informational speech or a call to order?
2. Have two to three main points directly supporting the purpose of your speech.
3. Have a definite opening, body, and conclusion of the speech to create impact. It is recommended to
memorize the opening and conclusion of the speech to create impact.
4. Try to include some humor. The members of the audience love a speech sprinkled with subtle humor.

Activity
Directions: Study one of the famous goodwill speeches made by President John F. Kennedy in 1963 in
Berlin, Germany “Ich bin ein Berliner” or “I am a Berliner”. After reading, make your own goodwill speech. Be
guided by the rubrics (see attached sheet).

I am a Berliner
An Excerpt

“I am proud to come to this city as the guest of your distinguished Mayor, who has symbolized
throughout the world the fighting spirit of West Berlin. And I am proud to visit the Federal Republic with
your distinguished Chancellor who for so many years has committed Germany to democracy and
freedom and progress and to come here in the company of my fellow American, General Clay, who has
been in this city during its great moments of crisis and will come again if ever needed…”
You live in a defended island of freedom, but your life is part of the main. So, let me ask you, as
I close, to lift your eyes beyond the dangers of today, to the hopes of tomorrow, beyond the freedom
merely of this city of Berlin, or your country of Germany, to the advance of freedom everywhere, beyond
the wall to the day of peace with justice, beyond yourselves and ourselves to all mankind.
Freedom is indivisible, and when one man is enslaved, all are not free. When all are free, then
we can look forward to that day when this city will be joined as one and this country and this great
Continent of Europe in a peaceful and hopeful globe. When that day finally comes, as it will, the people
of West Berlin can take sober satisfaction in the fact that they were in the front lines for almost two
decades.
All free men, wherever they may live, are citizens of Berlin.
And therefore, as a free man, I take pride in the words, “Ich bin ein Berliner.”
