Controls Technology
Low Voltage Controllers
Low voltage controllers (LVCs) interface with nurse call systems or pillow speakers to allow safe operation of
high voltage lighting systems. The low voltage controller isolates the patient from the high voltage, and provides
the logical control of multi-function luminaires to reduce the number of switches needed on the pillow speaker,
bed or wall. These LVCs are designed to eliminate interference with sensitive medical equipment common to the
hospital patient room.

Kenall MedMaster Patient Wall Switch

Kenall’s low voltage controller wall switch allows the clinical staff to easily regulate patient room lighting. It can
be placed at the entrance of the room, next to the patient bed, or any other location that is deemed convenient.
Different control configurations can be used together to create customized access without complicating the
installation. The switch is wired in parallel with the pillow speaker, bedside rail, and/or entertainment station to
the low voltage side of the low voltage controller.

• Easy access for staff

• Controls up to four separate lights/loads
• Seamless integration with any nurse call system
• Permits convenient dimming and easy on/off for lights

Advanced medical equipment, air handling and power sources now claim ceiling space that lighting used to occupy. The
previous commercial standard for asymmetric distribution (2.5 to 5 degrees) may not always be enough, so Kenall has updated
the M4SEDI product family to include 7 degree and 10-12 degree distribution options, which provide the opportunity to
significantly increase illuminance on the surgical field while also reducing power consumption.

Patient Room Lighting Considerations

Effective patient room lighting must balance both the aesthetic and analytic aspects of patient care. While patient comfort is
certainly of primary importance, caregiver performance remains the most critical component in determining patient outcome.
As a result, variable lighting options— including color tuning, switch control and dimming capabilities — become essential to an
effective patient room lighting design.
The diagram below describes each functional area of the patient room and the IES recommended footcandle levels required to
effectively light each area. This section details the solutions Kenall offers to meet these recommended levels, including lighting
fixtures that facilitate general/ambient room, patient bed, nightlight, casual chair and night observation needs.

Best Practices: Stairwell & Egress Lighting

Performance Requirements for Stairwell & Egress Lighting – and How We Meet Them
According to the Lighting Controls Association, commercial staircases are trafficked 3-5% of the average day. As
such, when paired with controls, they represent substantial cost and energy savings.

1. Integrated Controls and Motion Sensing Capability

Lighting should accommodate fluctuating activity levels
while conserving energy.
Kenall Solutions:
• Feature integrated controls to detect
occupancy* and daylight levels**— with adjustments
for both time delay and sensitivity
• Occupancy sensors are frequently embedded behind
a polycarbonate lens, adding extra durability
• A daylight-hold/off feature overrides the sensitivity
control setting, keeping the fixture off if sufficient
ambient daylight is detected

2. Durable, Sealed Construction

Kenall Solutions:
• Stairwell and egress luminaires carry IP ratings to
protect against the penetration of moisture, dirt,
and unsightly debris
• Luminaires are sealed and gasketed to provide
Kenall’s legendary resistance to physical abuse and
tampering
• ADA compliant fixtures carry an exclusive Peace of
Mind Guarantee® against breakage for the life of the
product installation

3. Emergency Lighting
Stairwells must meet the illumination levels required for
both stairs and landings, and, as a result, pose particular
emergency lighting challenges due to inherent changes
in elevation.

Kenall Solutions:
• Whether your emergency lighting need calls for a
3' or 6' wide path of egress, Kenall’s Millenium
Series offers systems capable of exceeding Life Safety
Code requirements for a wide variety of spatial
configurations

EXPLANATION OF “INGRESS PROTECTION” IP NUMBERS

IP
for Degrees of Protection for Sealed Luminaires
Example:

IP65 DEGREES OF PROTECTION INDICATED BY THE FIRST CHARACTERISTIC NUMERAL

Numeral Short Description Brief details of objects which will be “excluded”
from the enclosure
0 Non-protected No special protection
1 Protected against solid A large surface of the body, such as a hand
objects greater than 50 mm (but no protection against deliberate access).
Solid objects exceeding 50 mm in diameter.
2 Protected against solid objects Fingers or similar objects not exceeding 80 mm in
greater than 12 mm Solid objects exceeding 12 mm in diameter.
3 Protected against solid objects Tools, wires, etc., of diameter or thickness greater than
greater than 2.5 mm Solid objects exceeding 2.5 mm in diameter.
4 Protected against solid objects Wires or strips of thickness greater than 1.0 mm.
greater than 1.0 mm Solid objects exceeding 1.0 mm in diameter.
5 Dust-protected Ingress of dust is not totally prevented but dust does
not enter in sufficient quantity to interfere with
satisfactory operation of the equipment.
6 Dust-tight No ingress of dust

IP65 DEGREES OF PROTECTION INDICATED BY THE SECOND CHARACTERISTIC NUMERAL

Numeral Short Description Brief details of objects which will be “excluded”
from the enclosure
0 Non-protected No special protection
1 Protected against dripping water Dripping water (vertically falling drops) shall have no
harmful effect.
2 Protected against dripping water Vertically dripping water shall have no harmful effect
when tilted up to 15° when tilted up to 15° when the enclosure is tilted at any
angle up to 15° from its normal position.
3 Protected against spraying water Water falling as a spray at an angle up to 60° from
the vertical shall have no harmful effect.
4 Protected against splashing water Water splashed against the enclosure from any
direction shall have no harmful effect.
5 Protected against water jets Water projected by a nozzle against the enclosure from
any direction shall have no harmful effects.
6 Protected against heavy seas Water from heavy seas or water projected in powerful
jets shall not enter the enclosure in harmful quantities.
7 Protected against the effects of Ingress of water in a harmful quantity shall not be
immersion possible when the enclosure is immersed in water
under defined conditions of pressure and time.
8 Protected against submersion The equipment is suitable for continuous submersion in
water under conditions which shall be specified by the
manufacturer.
NOTE – Normally, this will mean that the equipment is
hermetically sealed. However with certain types of
equipment it can mean that water can enter but only in
such a manner that it produces no harmful effects.
