SYMPOSIUMS’ INTEGRATION: ITS IMPACTS TO THE LIVES OF GRADE 11

AND 12 STUDENTS

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Current and modern issues politically and socially are not those major concerns of

youth today which are students.

Current issues such as bullying, human trafficking, environment preservation etc.

are really a good topic to discuss to students. Current issues are ideas and concepts that

are timely and relevant to a specific place/country and commonly known by the residents

in the specific area.

Current issue are discussing to students through a symposium. A symposium is a

discrete session around a specific topic or problem that engages a group of people

(student) in a formal interactive discussion and also encourages lively participation,

presentation of alternative views (European Academy of Management) which comprises

experts in a field which could be drawn from different fields focusing the theme.

Being knowledgeable and well-informed is very essential to a person (Believe

perform). As a part of a community, knowing social and current issues may boost

confident and strengthens social life by means of making discourse or conversation to

them. Also, it is important to be aware on what are the latest news and trends of the

humanity to act the common rights that everyone’s have and that is to share and express

our thought towards other.

HOLY CROSS COLLEGE 1

SYMPOSIUMS’ INTEGRATION: ITS IMPACTS TO THE LIVES OF GRADE 11
AND 12 STUDENTS

The significance of symposium is found within the academe wherein experts such

as teachers, psychologists and advocators are the one who teaches the given issue where

students may be knowledgeable because it is a chance to better understand the culture of

the campuses where academic policy and programming meet student needs. This is also

an opportunity to consider the connection between student success and economic

outcomes (North Carolina: Best Practices Help) by preparing the students to find

fulfilling which can diminish the importance of critical thinking, civic engagement, social

development, and higher education.

Symposiums can also be organized by a group of experts in a resourceful

institution to focus on important issues that are related for the professional growth or

social issues. The messages, issues, problems to be discussed need to be systematically

outlined for worthwhile discussions and for arriving at some meaningful conclusions.

Symposium may also be presentation in the form of a research paper, a review, or

a model to visualize professional problems and issues in a given context which group

tackles a clear agenda in a formal setting. A speaker presents a theme or a set of papers

and it is discussed by all those who participate.

Nowadays, symposiums are widely conducted in schools and government

institution discussing the major issues such as effects of drugs and cigarettes,

preservation of environment and policies or laws of government like ‘’oplan-tokhang’’ or

double-barrel and freedom of information targeting the loudest and influential group in

social media and interaction which are the students.

HOLY CROSS COLLEGE 2

SYMPOSIUMS’ INTEGRATION: ITS IMPACTS TO THE LIVES OF GRADE 11
AND 12 STUDENTS

Students are the common audience of symposium because somehow they are also

the victim of some issues like bullying, sex abuse and addiction. Students also has the

fastest connection in social media that can spread the news or information in as fast as

possible and might persuade others to be involve and make a change from something that

is wrong.

Group of expert strengthens the awareness of students and widen their knowledge.

It is important that the school plays its essential role and builds a right communication to

the purpose of the said issue in symposium by implementing rules that may practice the

lesson that the student learns about the event for continuous application purposes.

Currently, the humanity now is living in the modern days, in the 21 st century

where everything is instant, fast, dependant in technology and most people are globally

competitive with academic learning (Elite Daily). Global competencies has been one of

the criteria or credentials outside the school academe, in the professional community, one

of the reasons why some graduates could not get a job and hired as soon as possible. In

the K-12 curriculum, one of the important purposes is to train and test the students to be

globally competitive inside and outside the academe processing and moulding the

students in it is finest as they go out and conquer the real life outside.

As the researchers are doing their observation to the Grade 11 Senior High

School students in different strands such as STEM, ABM, HUMSS and TECH-VOC,

they found out that some students are having difficulties in expressing and generating

their ideas in a certain topic in as specific as they can, giving facts and self-interpretation.

HOLY CROSS COLLEGE 3

SYMPOSIUMS’ INTEGRATION: ITS IMPACTS TO THE LIVES OF GRADE 11
AND 12 STUDENTS

This is the very reason why we come up with this research, the impacts of

symposium to students. We like to know how symposium prepares the life of senior high

school students inside and outside of the school community through identifying the

following impacts that may help them towards enhancing their capabilities or somehow

affect their life negatively by wrong speech that sometimes being misinterpreted by the

listeners to speaker.

The symposium’s impacts to student are very evident. It increases the capacity of

mind to think critically by means of comparing two things. Example is the issue of extra-

judicial killings; a person will measure or weigh the life between peace and orderliness.

Another thing is competence, globally in-line with the information in county or what.

Symposium is really a vital part of student’s growth within the school that may

create the spirit of leadership to some students to lead their classmates towards good and

right action by teaching them the necessary lessons to apply relating to the certain topic

that pertains about good leadership.

Statement of the Problem

The research sought to find out the impacts of the integration of symposium to the

lives of students in different strands such as STEM, ABM, HUMSS and TECH-VOC.

The general problem of the study is: What is the significance of symposiums in

the lives of the students?

Specifically, the study sought answers to the following questions:

1. How often do symposiums happen in Holy Cross College?

HOLY CROSS COLLEGE 4

SYMPOSIUMS’ INTEGRATION: ITS IMPACTS TO THE LIVES OF GRADE 11
AND 12 STUDENTS

a. What are the possible issues to discuss inside?

2. How do students respond to the conducted symposiums?

3. How often do students pay attention to social issues?

a. Is it necessary to pay attention to these today?

4. How symposium may affect the lives of students?

a. What are the impacts of symposium to the lives of student?

Significance of the Study

Symposiums’ impacts play a very essential role to everyday life of students. On

how they decide or make choices, on how they think in worldview, another person’s view

and own point of view. It also teaches to be sensitive with surroundings, with what is

happening around, to discern every single moment that passes between the eyes and mind

and to sum up, learning, understanding, and comprehension are the things that practice by

the symposium as an observation to everyday living.

But nowadays, students are more often focus on things that not matters in political

aspects and more often concerns with what they want just to do. The Philippines itself,

the headlines and front page, sometimes students are clueless in everything that is

happening about the country as if they are not belong to the community of this country.

Symposium is a bridge that connects and patterns innocent and young minds to

the real and actual world where soon to be conquest. That’s why school acts an important

part as a mediator or instrument of learning which student cannot find and seek in their

own way. Symposium really brings students in touch with culture and beliefs by

reminding every single inch of the latest trends in the country and also reflects how

HOLY CROSS COLLEGE 5

SYMPOSIUMS’ INTEGRATION: ITS IMPACTS TO THE LIVES OF GRADE 11
AND 12 STUDENTS

humanity changes in a short span of time by how every issue pops out suddenly.

Symposium also is an alarm which reminds us that change is in the hands of audience and

hope is to do change now.

To the students. This study will ensure students their awareness towards social issues as

a preparation to the real and outside world.

To the Administrators. This research will be a vanguard of information on how students

are really prepared, their insufficiency and how they could able to impart information

regarding social issues. This includes the improvement and implementation of

symposiums often.

To the Future Researchers. This study will help to the future researchers by means of

basis and preferences for better results of their research.

Conceptual Framework

Listening attentively to the speaker of symposium is a very good character of a

student surrounded by hundreds audiences that’s why learning should be on flow and

manageable to avoid wasting of hour and effort.

It is very important that these impacts of symposium’s integration must be

properly addressed and be given ample solutions and recommendations for further

improvement especially for the students’ education

The knowledge inside the symposium’s lesson can be used in communication

locally, internationally and worldwide and it is important to students that they must know

these impacts of symposium’s integration affect every students.

CHAPTER II

METHODOLOGY

The researchers came up to this target population or sample because the goal of

this research is to make others realize, students particularly, on how symposiums may

help individual’s growth and improvement especially to senior high school that are

expected to become aware and knowledgeable in the society’s competitiveness. As a

sample population, senior high school of Holy Cross College will be the instrument of

this research because they have the exact or more than number of what the researchers

need to fully conduct the research and as the researchers analyse the number of senior

high school students, they divide it equally to the number of strand and equal also to the

number of student per section but filtered in choosing sections as a respondent.

The researchers chose particular method because it will easily help the researchers

to identify the effects or impacts of symposium to the lives of student and by this kind of

method, the stratified sampling under non-probability sampling, the researchers are the

one who chooses the number of population or decides the size of the sample and divide it

into sub-sets or sub-samples having the same aggregate number as that of the sample they

came from.

The methodology used is appropriate to the objectives of the study. It helps the

student to realize that through engaging in various symposiums, it may help them towards

competitiveness and self-awareness.

HOLY CROSS COLLEGE 10

SYMPOSIUMS’ INTEGRATION: ITS IMPACTS TO THE LIVES OF GRADE 11
AND 12 STUDENTS

Research Design

The non-experimental research design was used in this study. This type of

research design is a quantitative data where it is a numerical form, more on numbers

other than words.

The method was used is both quantitative and qualitative, which is very

appropriate with the study. Quantitative because, to get the number of students who listen

and attend symposiums, the researchers used the statistical method by simply giving them

the scale and qualitative at the same time, at the last part of the questionnaire, is a

question asking the respondents about the help of symposiums in their lives.

Respondents

The researchers chose the senior high school students of Holy Cross College as

their respondents choosing 330 students from grade 11 and grade 12 of different strand

and of different tracks. With this, in every section, the researchers allocated only 16

questionnaires and for some are 17, but the number of students in class will not affect the

results of the data. The researchers also aim that as far as possible, the questionnaires

should be sending to those who are capable of comprehending questions and analyzing

facts.

Stratified sampling under Non-probability method is the technique the researchers

used in choosing the respondents. The researchers used the Slovin’s Formula to get the

number of the respondents. (See Appendix A)

In choosing the respondents, the researchers prioritized those who are capable of

understanding the questionnaires and are able to comprehend the following information

indicated in the survey form. Usually, the researchers picked, as far as possible, those

who are in top of the class for better results of the data.

Instruments

Survey through questionnaires and unstructured interviews are the instruments

that the researchers used to successfully conduct the collection of data in the field the

researchers chose.

A questionnaire filled with 8 questions is composed by the questions in specific

inquiries that will ensure that the researchers will get the data enough for the study. It is

through checking the corresponding box that fits to the answer. Questions are composed

and related to the general question and the specific questions written in the part of the

statement of the problem. In line with this, the researchers chose the scale answering the

question how often. The possible answers are always, sometimes, seldom and never.

HOLY CROSS COLLEGE 12

SYMPOSIUMS’ INTEGRATION: ITS IMPACTS TO THE LIVES OF GRADE 11
AND 12 STUDENTS

Data Collection

In line with this, the researchers first asked the permission of the research head

and to the authority of Senior High School Principal to fully conduct and formally start

the collection of data. After getting the validation with the activity, the researchers

immediately divided the work in gathering the data in equal number of sections with

same instruction by the leader of researchers. Also, each member, as they enter their

room assignments, first asked an excuse and time to the teacher that they encounter.

Then, they present the goal of the study to catch the attention of the respondents. (See

CHAPTER III

RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS

After the analysis of data and organization of results, the researchers tallied the

answers. In question number one, the researchers asked about watching news and

AND 12 STUDENTS

documentaries regarding social issues where the respondents said they do. In connection

with this, the researchers followed another question asking about their participation in

activities in school about social issues of today, the respondents also answered that they

always participate in any activities conducted by the school about the issues happening in

the society. But, in question number three, the researchers asked about how frequently do

symposiums happen in their school, the result above shows that it is very sometimes

symposiums happen in their school. In the questions four to eight, it only concludes that

senior high school students appreciate the power of symposium, the application, and its

significance to their lives. (See Table 1.2: Survey and Questionnaire, page 14)

Meanwhile, Figure 1.2 below summarizes the idea of students in a symposium,

their participation in any activities relating social issues and how do symposium helps

them individually. To support the table above, the researchers used a pie graph to easily

understand how essential symposiums to the lives of student are, what the benefits of this

activity are and how it may affect to them.

The researchers also asked the effects of symposium to the students and they

decided to put in into an essay form where respondents are free to state the benefits of

symposium to their lives. With this, out of 330 respondents, sixty-eight per cent (68%) of

them answered that it really helps to gain knowledge and raise awareness. Also, seven per

cent (7%) said that because of symposium, their perspective has changed. Meanwhile, the

twenty per cent (20%) is the sum of unrelated answers and no written answers in the

essay type. The remaining five per cent (5%) is the total per cent of answers like

innovation, social interaction and personal improvement.

The graph tells that awareness and being knowledgeable, indeed, is the dominant

effect of symposium to the students.

CHAPTER IV

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

A symposium indeed helps every student to be competitive inside and outside the

academe by simply being aware, knowledgeable and updated to social issues happening

nowadays. But considering the results given by the respondents, there is no open gate or

way for them which are accessible, easy and reliable than the school or academe itself.

However, there is dearth in symposium where students rarely experience and engage

themselves towards symposiums depicting social issues.

This conclusion leads that although they believe in the helps of symposium,

they cannot still have this because of the lacking of symposiums producing uneducated

and not well-prepared students and will come out in their work place soon being not that

competitive because of the lacking idea about the today’s alarming situation.

As a conclusion, the researchers found out that most of the student believes that

symposium can help them towards awareness and being informative, have social

interaction and may deeper their views about a specific issue but symposiums does not

happen very often. It means that though they believe, still there is no way for them to

gain knowledge because of the dearth of symposium.

There is no such a perfect research study. As for the future researchers, a room for

improvement on the researchers’ study is open. If they will to, they can go beyond the

limitation set by the researchers either add the number of the respondents or conduct a

study on other schools outside the Holy Cross College.

HOLY CROSS COLLEGE 17

SYMPOSIUMS’ INTEGRATION: ITS IMPACTS TO THE LIVES OF GRADE 11
AND 12 STUDENTS

As for the school administration, the researchers believe that the conducted

study will be a gateway to providing the needs of the students not just in intellect but as

well as the introduction of the possible ways of the world in facing the reality. The school

can use the result of the study to improve the previous conducted symposiums for better

learning and readiness of an individual. These, after all, can be significant in the society

they belong to.
