Reflection:: Answer the following questions.
2. How did the song video make you feel?
R/ The video of the song made me feel quite identified and was also very motivating.
3. What was your favorite stanza of the song? Why?
R/ The verse that I liked the most about the song was: "but I will not let them dust me, I know there
is a place for us, because we are glorious". This is at the beginning of the song, and I liked it because,
despite the fact that people are hurtful and disrespectful to them, they are able to see that in the
dark there is a light and that that light is themselves, being glorious.
4. Have you or someone you know ever felt so different, marginalized, or bullied that you thought
you were never going to be accepted by others? Describe the situation.
R/ Yes. I myself, receiving bullying and hurtful comments from other people, I felt that I was never
going to like someone, much less I was going to like myself. Many times I was not accepted, because
people believed that I was someone who, definitely, never was and never will be.
5. Have you or someone you know ever felt so popular, recognized, or loved that you thought you were
the one in charge of accepting or discriminating others? Describe the situation.
R/ Yes. I had a friend who was that type of person. He never thought about the welfare of his
friends or other people, and he caused quite a few internal wounds in me and I believe in many more
people.
“El parlache”
6. What do you think about parlache? Is it appropriate or inappropriate? Explain
R/ I think that "el parlache" is something very characteristic of us Colombians. Many people are
upset when they hear it, and some words may not be very respectful. But it is something that
characterizes us a lot and I do not see it inappropriate for some occasions.
7. Do you normally use some parlache words? Under what circumstances?
R/ Yes, I use quite a few. Most I use them when I am in confidence with friends. On other occasions
I am more reserved, but even so I express myself with words from "el parlache" that are not so
flamboyant.
8. Do you think parlache reflects our drug-trafficking culture?
R/ No. I think that "the parlache" is more coming from what are the communes, the countryside,
towns and even some cities. Our expressions are quite unique, perhaps some expressions do reflect a
culture of drug trafficking. But there are others that make us Colombian and characterize us by
their peculiar meaning or accent.
9. Create a dictionary containing at least 30 different words you consider that a foreign person
shouldn know in order to understand your own Spanish accent (paisa, costeño, caleño, Venezuelan,
etc). Provide the definition in English as they did in the previous text.
