Flood in Bangladesh

Introduction: Flood is nothing but a caprice of nature. As Bangladesh, is a low-lying riparian

country, the country is prone to flooding and it falls victim to flood almost every year. It is the
most dangerous natural calamity in this country.

Causes of flood: There are several reasons of floods. Heavy rainfall is one of the main ones.
When the rivers fail to hold the water of heavy showers of rain, they overflow the rivers and
inundate the adjacent areas. Unplanned highways and embankments, lack of sufficient canals
and outlets of water also cause floods in this country.

Flood aftermath: Flood brings untold miseries to our country by damaging our crops and
properties. It sweeps away from villages and towns. Thousands of people become homeless,
helpless and suffer greatly for want of shelter, food and many other things. Famines and
epidemics also break out during and after floods and take heavy tolls of lives.

Floods also have good effects. It makes our soil alluvial and fertile. As such our soil becomes
suitable for growing more and better crops. They wash away all sorts of rubbishes and purify the
surface of the earth.

Some notable floods: Flood has become an annual affair in Bangladesh. Most of the floods that
occurred in the years of 1954, 1968, 1970, 1971, 1974, 1987, 1988 and 1998 were very fearful
and disastrous. But the flood in 1988 and 1998 broke all the previous records.

Relief operations: Relief operations become badly needed for the flood-affected people.
Government and voluntary organizations come forward to help the flood victims. Relief camps
are set up at different places like schools and colleges. Relief materials like food, clothes,
medicines etc. are promptly distributed among the flood victims.

Conclusion: Flood is a great curse for us. It causes huge loss of life and poses severe blow to
our national economy. So, we must take measures to discover the causes of floods and prevent
them as much as possible to mitigate the suffering of the flood victims.
