6 Ways to Spot a Fake Review

Online market, such as Amazon, has offered us limitless variety of products, making us hard to
decide which products to buy. So we check the product’s “Reviews” section to check whether
the product is worth buying or not. The “Reviews” section must be trustworthy, right?

Unfortunately, not really. The “Reviews” section cannot always be trusted due to the rise of
fake and paid reviews nowadays. So how can you distinguish fake reviews from the trusted
ones? These are eight ways to help you recognize the fake reviews.

1. Timestamp. When you’re opening the review section, check the times and dates of
reviews. According to Tommy Noonan from ReviewMeta, if all reviews are posted
around the same day and times, or within a short time frame, it may be fake reviews to
boost the product rating.
2. Reviewer’s profile. Next, you can click on the reviewer’s profile to see their activities.
Be suspicious when that reviewer only left five-star on many products as advised by
Jonathan Goldman, President of Quantum Networks, a Top 200 Amazon
Seller. There is a high chance that those reviews are fake.
3. Review length. Another advice comes from Polly Kay, the Head of Digital Marketing
at Amazon seller English Blinds UK. She points out that the length of authentic
reviews may vary, but more likely provide details about the product quality,
functionality, and condition when arrived.
4. Grammar Nazi. For Michael Lai, a CEO of sitejabber, a business review company,
product reviews written in careless spelling and bad grammar are signs of fake reviews,
and of course, fake products. That is because “Many Amazon fake reviews are from
international content farms …badly express what should be expressed by a real
consumer,” Lai explains.
5. Orange badge. Goldman hints that an orange badge that appears next to the product
review is a sign that the review is verified. So the next time you want to check whether
the product review is real or not, find that orange badge.
6. Reviewer’s Personality. Many of the fake reviews are generated with a computer. So
try to look for emotions or personality of a person who posts the review, such as
strong adjectives. You can expect them to show humor, frustration, excitement, even
vengeful in their posts. reviews. Reviews with humor or real-life examples of use are
certainly real, and could not be generated with a computer. Products with a range of
ratings rather than just five-star reviews are more trustworthy.
