Quadratics

Syllabus AS Pure Math

Quadratic equation: ax2 + bx + c = 0:

a parabola with vertex at the stationary point

stationary point(minimum & maximum point), turning point, have gradient m =0

Stretch graph

Factorise to find roots ( y-intercept)

Complete square to find vertex.

Use quadratic if necessary

Graph faces up for a > 0 and down for a < 0

Solve quadratics equations:

Factorisation:

put in form a(x + m)(x + n) =0

roots at −m and −n.

Complete the square:

divide by a ⇒ x2 + ab x + ac = 0
2
put in form a(x − p) +q=0
b
vertex at (p, q), line of symmetry at x = p = − 2a
Discriminant: b2 − 4ac
> 0 ⟹ quadratic has 2 distinct roots
= 0 ⟹ quadratic has 1 root

Quadratics 1
< 0 ⟹ quadratics has no real root

Intersection with a line:

find x from f(x) = g(x)
OR

substitude x from 1 equation to the other

Discriminant: b2 − 4ac
> 0 ⟹ has 2 intersection point
= 0 ⟹ has 1 intersecting point, tangent
< 0 ⟹ has no intersecting point

Quadratics 2
