SOCIOLOGY
POLITICAL SCIENCE
The Social Darwinism, that was based on Charles Darwin’s theory, was
the idea that the closer a cultural group was to the standard behavior and
appearance in Western Europe, the more advanced they became.
KEY TERMS
Social Darwinism- A theory that the rules of evolution often apply to social
structures through natural selection.
Culture- The beliefs, principles, behavior, and material objects that form the
way of life of people.
2. How does studying culture, society and politics affect our daily lives?
- Incorporating culture, society, and politics in our academic lives provides
impacts in our daily lives in many ways. First, it gives us the opportunity to be
better in arriving to the best decisions as we face daily struggles such as in
mingling with people in the society. Second, our understanding in culture
makes us a little better in treating other people of different colors, and our
tolerance for positive intercultural interactions become more often. Third, and
last among the many possible impacts, studying politics will empower us, and
will make us more competent individuals in choosing right leaders and in
expressing our opinions and constructive criticisms toward the administration.
In that way, we are not only benefited, but they will gain something from us.
3. How can you use your knowledge and understanding in culture, society,
and politics in responding to different social issues?
- Learnings from the aforementioned areas such as culture, society, and
politics are vital in order to fully understand and address certain social issues.
When we dig deeper into culture, we grasp important knowledge that will
guide us in making decisions and in giving opinions. Thus, being able to
develop cultural sensitivity is a must in order to ensure that as we address
problems concerning humanity, we are all in equal-footing, our decisions are
inclusive, no culture would feel more inferior than others, and most
importantly, for us not to hurt other races. Moreover, comprehending what
society really is will shape our ideas in solving social issues because whether
we like it or not, we cannot hide the fact that the society holds the answer for
these "self-inflicted" dilemmas. Lastly, politics play an important role,
especially in the success of how we respond to these social issues because
they act as the upperhand in decision-making, although people like us can
still move mountains by creating collective voices for us to be heard by those
at the political scene. As we can see, these 3 things display
interconnectedness in combating social issues. As for me, beginning from
what I will be gaining in this subject, I will use it to further create awareness,
reiterating key points that need to be fully understood, and in order for people
to make important decisions as we come together in the fight to possibly
eradicate these issues. Ultimately, understanding is a core value that one
should possess, and if we teach people how to be kind and inclusive, it is
without a doubt that we will be able to response successfully to social issues,
and eventually, erase hatred and radiate positivity for humanity
