ACTION PLAN/PROJECT PROPOSAL
Lack of Immunization

A. Project Title
“Bakuna Pangpalig-on para sa Maayong Kaugmaon”
(Immunization Project: Health Promotion)

B. Project Identification
The project, “Bakuna Pangpalig-on para sa Maayong Kaugmaon” will be
focused mainly on health education about immunization and its importance in the
community for the purpose of informing and encouraging parents of
unimmunized children to allow their children to be immunized. Furthermore, the
organizers of the event will also consider the Health and Safety protocols for
COVID-19 which includes the wearing of masks and face shield and social
distancing. In preparation of this event, there will be:
a. Preparation of the program venue with the technicals (laptop, speaker,
microphone, and projector) and designs (tarpaulin, others);
b. Registration for the event for the people of Brgy. Talandang who will
participate;
c. Provision of leaflets containing the summary of the lecture to help guide
the audience with the flow of the program and lecture;
d. Introduction of a speaker who is an expert in the field of immunization to
lead the lecture;
e. Counseling for the residents with other concerns through the question
and answer portion with the speaker; and
f. Distribution of pads of Vitamin C to each family to help them start their
practices to boost their immunity at home.
C. Type of Project
The project will be presented to Barangay Talandang through lecture
(symposium-like). A lecture is a form of oral presentation that allows the speaker
to be able to share their knowledge with the audience. The student nurses will
implement their health teachings on the topic of immunization in a way that is
understandable to the people of Barangay Talandang in order to improve the
community’s knowledge and compliance with the health-related problem. The
lecture will be presented through a PowerPoint presentation.

H. Beneficiaries
The beneficiaries of this project are parents that have children under 5
years of age; especially their children living in the barangay of Talandang,
Tugbok District, Davao City especially the residents of Purok Lanzones, Tisa, and
Santol, our adopted puroks. As student nurses, we can also benefit from this
program because it will improve our capacity to connect to our patients, minimize
the incidence of certain childhood diseases, and, in fact, it can serve as an
inspiration for us to continue through our journey as a student nurse and even
when the day arrives that we become a full-time nurse. The health centers within
the neighborhood will benefit from our efforts and it will encourage them to have
their children immunized and a greater awareness of immunization will be
accomplished.
I. Goals and Objectives
Problem: Risk of Immunizable Diseases leading to infant morbidity and mortality in
Talandang related to lack of immunization.

Goal
To encourage the people in Talandang, specifically the parents, to have
their children immunized to prevent childhood morbidity and mortality.

Objectives
At the end of the year 2020, the community of Barangay Talandang will be
able to:
1. Demonstrate the ability to participate during vaccination days or schedules held
by the health workers in the health center of Talandang;
2. Establish an effective, prepared, and organized immunization schedules done by
the health workers of Talandang;
3. Reduce the percentage of children with incomplete immunization in Purok Santol
(38.50%) for at least 15-20%;
4. Decrease the total percentage of children with incomplete immunization in Purok
Tisa(28%) for at least 15-20%;
5. Increase the total percentage of fully immunized children in both Purok Santol
and Purok Tisa for at least 15%-20% each.
6. Practice returning back to the health center to continue receiving the doses
needed;
7. Show that the health center is up-to-date with all recommended vaccines; and
8. Reduce the prevalence of vaccine-preventable diseases in children from
Barangay Talandang.
J. Project Rationale and Description
The project, “Bakuna Pangpalig-on para sa Maayong Kaugmaon”, will
provide a symposium to address the health risk of Brgy. Talandang, Tugbok,
Davao City, with their lack of immunizations for the children in their community.
We will be hiring a speaker, Richard M. Adriano, RN, who is a Barangay Health
Nurse in Brgy. 74-A, Matina Crossing, Davao City to provide a reliable lecture on
Immunizations. The lecture will include a small introduction on Immunization, the
required vaccines by age, the importance of immunization and its purpose, the
truth and myth about immunization, how vaccines work, and the benefits of
immunization. With that, this event will provide the residents of Brgy. Talandang a
chance to understand the weight of the problem and encourage them to
vaccinate their children. Lastly, we will also provide hygiene kits that will help the
residents begin the practice of improving their immune system.

Health Education Content

What is Immunization?
• According to the World Health Organization (WHO), immunization is the
process whereby a person is made immune or resistant to an infectious
disease, typically by the administration of a vaccine.
• Immunization is a proven tool for controlling and eliminating life-threatening
infectious diseases and is estimated to avert between 2 and 3 million deaths
each year.
• It is one of the most cost-effective health investments, with proven strategies
that make it accessible to even the most hard-to-reach and vulnerable
populations.

What is the importance of Immunization?

• Vaccines stimulate the body’s own immune system to protect the person
against subsequent infection or disease.
How do vaccines work?
• Vaccines work by training the immune system to recognize and combat
pathogens, either viruses or bacteria. To do this, certain molecules from the
pathogen must be introduced into the body to trigger an immune response.

Disadvantages of not having their children immunized?

• Your child can catch diseases from people who don’t have any
symptoms. You can’t always tell who is contagious.
It’s the parent’s responsibility:
1. To inform your child’s school, childcare facility, and other caregivers about
your child’s vaccination status.
2. Notify the doctor’s office, urgent care facility, ambulance personnel, or
emergency room staff that your child has not been fully vaccinated. They
need to consider the possibility that your child may have a
vaccine-preventable disease so that they can treat your child correctly as
quickly as possible.
3. Isolate your child so disease during an outbreak does not spread to your
child and others especially infants too young to be fully vaccinated.
4. Look up the countries where you will travel on the CDC travelers’ website
before traveling. Travelers are exposed to diseases during travel or by
others that traveled and returned to the U.S.

Immunization in the Philippines

• According to the Department of Health in the Philippines (DOH), the
Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) was established in 1976 to ensure
that infants/children and mothers have access to routinely recommended
infant/childhood vaccines.
• There are six vaccine-preventable diseases that were initially included in the
EPI: tuberculosis, poliomyelitis, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, and measles.
According to the World Health Organization, immunization is the process
whereby a person is made immune or resistant to an infectious disease, typically
by the administration of a vaccine. A vaccine works by introducing a weakened or
killed form of the same germs, microbes or disease-causing microorganisms that
are completely harmless to the body. This will stimulate the immune system to
produce antibodies to fight off the disease-causing microorganisms and will
retain a memory of the disease in the immune system. When the time comes
when the body encounters the same disease it will easily fight it off and prevent
the development of infection ("How vaccines work | British Society for
Immunology", 2020). Immunization among children is a cost-effective way to
prevent them from acquiring vaccine-preventable diseases such as polio and
measles.

Despite its advantage to a child’s health, there are still some parents who
refuse and are hesitant to immunize their children because of misconceptions
and issues concerning vaccines. According to Lulu Bravo, a retired professor
from the College of Medicine, University of the Philippines, "Some mothers call
health workers on immunization drives child killers." Vaccine hesitancy also
worsened during the withdrawal of Dengvaxia last November of 2017 due to the
risks associated with it (Icamina, 2019). The top reasons for the vaccine refusal
and hesitancy are the fear due to Dengvaxia, and the lack of time among
households, this is according the study conducted by the World Health
Organization last October 2018 in Metro Manila ("DOH Identifies Vaccine
Hesitancy As One Of The Reasons For Measles Outbreak", 2018). This caused
the lack of immunization in the Philippines which resulted in outbreaks of
vaccine-preventable diseases.
