Assignment No. 2
In
CE 03

Topic: Dead Loads , Live Loads and Wind loads (to be submitted)

Problems: Using your assignment notebook, solve the following problems as indicated.

1. The floor system of an apartment bldg. consists of a 4 in. thick reinforced concrete slab
resting on three steel floor beams, which in turn are supported by two steel girders as
shown in figure. The areas of cross section of the floor beams and the girders are 18.3in.²
and 32.7in.² respectively. Determine the dead loads acting on the beam CD and the girder
AE.

2. The beam supports the roof made from asphalt shingles and wood sheathing boards. If
the boards have a thickness of 1½in. and the specific weight of 50 lb./ft.³, and the roofs
angle of slope is 30º. Determine the dead load of the roofing per square foot that is
supported in the x any directions by the purlins.

1
3. A four-storey office building has interior columns spaced 30ft. apart in two perpendicular
directions. If the flat-roof loading is estimated to be 30 lb./ft.², determine the reduced live
load supported by typical interior column located at ground level.

4. The t-beam used in a heavy storage warehouse is made of concrete having a specific
weight of 19.6 KN/m.³. Determine the dead load per meter length of the beam, and the
live load on the top of the beam per meter length of the beam. Neglect the weight of the
steel reinforcement.

5. For design purposes, the wind pressure in a building is calculated to have a value of 2.96
KPa. What is the value of the wind velocity at this location?
6. Calculate the leeward and windward pressure of a building when the wind velocity is
150kph; 200 mph
7. Calculate the windward pressure of a building if the pressure on its leeward side is given
to have a value of: a. 2 KPa ; b. 30 lb./ft2

2
(Use NSCP 2015 SPECIFICATIONS)

8. A three storey commercial building with 9.7m floor height is located at Tagbilaran City.
Determine the velocity pressure and design wind pressure acting on the roof.

9. A three storey commercial building with

3m on every floor with a roof slope of
1:10 is located at Tagbilaran City.
Determine the velocity pressure and
design wind pressure acting on the roof.

10. A three storey commercial building

with 8.35m floor height is located at
Tagbilaran City. Determine the
velocity pressure and design wind
pressure acting on the roof.

Target date: On or before next

meeting.
