Learning the significance of studying contemporary sculpture is a no-brainer. Sculpting would help you
develop self-discipline because making a sculpture requires a lot of patience and industry. You would be able
to recognize that nothing really comes without hard work and industry creates the greater things in life. You
would be able to discover things about yourself when you gave importance to sculpting. Things such as your
perspective about the world you live into and what are the simple ways you would be able to do to transform
it. You would be able to think about things that could tell who you really are. 12
After studying the significance of contemporary sculptures, let’s now go to another form of fine arts which
is the architecture.
II. ARCHITECTURE
The exposure of Filipino architects to the prevailing western styles of the 1930s and 1950s gave birth to
localized strains of Art Deco and the International Style. This architectural renaissance continued until the
1970s where local architecture giants like Carlos Arguelles, Jose Zaragoza, and Leandro Locsin created
memorable structures that were modern yet culturally and climactically responsive. Political turmoil and brain
drain of the 1980s, however, put a brake on this development. And today, we are still gripped with an
unfortunate case of colonial mentality, an inferiority complex that has resulted in themed-subdivisions and
copycat architecture.13
However, in the book Random Responses14 of a contemporary architect Jason Buensalido, he listed four
(4) points of Filipino culture that is evident in our Contemporary Architecture:

exploring the unexplored or hidden ability to act, but also by shedding the inhibitions associated with
performing in front of an audience.
III. DANCE
Contemporary dance is a style of expressive dance that combines
elements of several dance genres including modern, jazz, lyrical and
classical ballet. Contemporary dancers strive to connect the mind and
the body through fluid dance movements.36
One important and unique aspect of contemporary dance is that it
rejects the importance of the legs that many traditional dance styles
stress. Instead, contemporary dance focuses on movement of the
torso, which enables much more fluid, languid movement, rather than Norbert Dela Cruz III, a native of Nueva Vizcaya,
and Zachary Tang. Photo grabbed from

versatility and improvisation, unlike the strict, structured nature of
ballet.38
People who study contemporary dance develop physical skills and training habits that can help them
maintain better health throughout their lives. They would also gain poise, confidence, emotional stability, and
creative thinking skills that will help them throughout their life and professional careers. 39
IV. MUSIC
According to Victor Mendoza40, contemporary music is, simply put,
“music performed and created with what is rhythmically, harmonically,
and texturally current.”
Music is the medium that most often resonates in contemporary art.
Music has always been of central importance to humankind, and its
influence on performing artists and their work is neither new nor
surprising.41
According to Susan Rogers42, "Contemporary music is by, for, and
about young people,”. "It serves dancing, socializing, courtship, and

about analysis, compared to listening to music from earlier times. It is
the job of young people to rebel against musical norms; it is the job of
older people to conserve what was good about them.”
