7. In a polar coordinate system, O is the pole. The polar coordinates of the points A, B and C are (3, 20°),
(3, 140°) and (3, 260°) respectively.

8. A farm with x cows produces y kg of milk per day, where 0 ≤ x ≤ 220 . It is given that y is the sum of two
parts, one part varies directly as x and the other part varies directly as x2 . When x = 90 , y = 3 780 ; when
x = 120 , y = 4 320 .

(a) Express y in terms of x .

(b) How many cows should a farm have in order to produce exactly 4095 kg of milk per day?

10. The coordinates of the point A are (2, 8) . B is a moving point on the x-axis. Let (b, 0) be the coordinates
of B. Denote the perpendicular bisector of AB by L .

(b) C is a point on the x-axis such that BC = 2 and C is on the right of B . Denote the centre of the circle
passing through A , B and C by P . Find the equation of the locus of P .

11. A right circular conical vessel of volume 32 000π cm3 contains 15 616π cm3 of water. The base of the vessel
rests on a horizontal ground and the depth of water is x cm . 11 060π cm3 of water is added into the vessel
and the water level rises by 15 cm .

(a) Find x . (3 marks)

(b) Stacey claims that the wet surface area of the vessel after the water is added will be greater than
11 330 cm2 . Do you agree? Explain your answer. (3 marks)

14. Let f(x) = x2 − 4x . Suppose g(x) ≡ [f(x)]2 + mf(x) + n ≡ x4 + px3 + qx2 + rx + s , where m, n, p, q, r and s are
constants. When g(x) is divided by x − 2, the remainder is 19 . When g(x) is divided by x + 2 , the
remainder is 115 .

(a) Find p , q , r and s . (4 marks)

(b) Determine whether all the roots of the equation g(x) = 10 are integers. Explain your answer.

(c) William claims that when g(x) is divided by x − a and when g(x) is divided by x + a − 4 , where a is
a real number, the two remainders are always equal. Do you agree? Explain your answer.

15. There is a row of 5 shoe boxes. Each shoe box can hold 2 shoes. 5 identical left shoes and 5 identical right
shoes are put into the shoe boxes randomly. A shoe box is correct if and only if it contains a left shoe and a
right shoe. Find the probability that there are at least 3 consecutive correct shoe boxes. (3 marks)

19. As shown in Figure 3 below, a cylinder is cut through an inclined plane and the upper part is discarded.
The lower part is cut through a horizontal plane which passes through the lowest point of the inclined
plane and the lower part is discarded. The remaining solid is placed on the horizontal ground.

As shown in Figure 4 below, there is a mountain with the same shape as the solid mentioned. A and B are
the lowest point and the highest point on the mountain respectively. It is known that B is due north of A .
AB is a line inclined at 30° to the horizontal and AB = 4 km . P is a point on the edge of the mountain such
that the bearing of P from A is NθW . B′ and P′ are the projections of B and P on the horizontal ground
respectively.

back to A . Is it possible for a participant to travel less than 9.5 km and finish the race? Explain your

20. The equation of the circle C is x2 + y2 + kx – 8y + 48 = 0 , where k is a constant. It is given that the line
y = 2 is a tangent to C. The centre of C lies in quadrant I .

(a) Find k . (3 marks)

(b) Q is a moving circle touching both the x-axis and C . Denote the centre of Q by P(x, y) .

(i) Express the possible distance(s) between P and the centre of C in terms of y .

(ii) Find the equation(s) of the locus of P .
