LINEAR EQUATIONS IN TWO
VARIABLES

Standard Form:
ax + by = c

Example: Write the following linear

equations in standard form,then identify
a, b and c.
1) 3x+2y - 4 = 0
Answer: 3x + 2y = 4
a = 3, b = 2, c = 4
Example: Write the following linear
equations in standard form,then
identify a, b and c.

2) 5y = 4x - 6
Answer: 4x - 5y = 6
a = 4, b = -5, c = 6

3) 3 + x = - 7y
Answer: x + 7y = -3
a = 1, b = 7, c = -3
Slope-Intercept Form:
y = mx + b

Example: Write the following linear

equations in the slope-intercept form.
1) 3x + 2y - 4 = 0
Solution: 3x + 2y - 4 = 0
2y = -3x + 4

2y = -3x + 4
2 2
y = -3/2 x + 2
Example: Write the following linear
equations in slope-intercept form.

2) 5y = 4x - 6
Solution: 5y = 4x – 6
5y = 4x – 6
5 5
y = 4/5 x – 6/5
