OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:


• Identify different artistic expression during the prehistoric
period an ancient Egypt
• Analyze how elements and principles of art are applied in
various art works during the prehistoric period and ancient
Egypt.
• Determine the use or function of artworks by evaluating their
purpose and design with the combination of art elements
and principles.

Prehistoric Art
The prehistoric period began with the
appearance of humans and ended
with the discovery of writing. The
Paleolithic period (Stone Age), a
hunter-gatherer culture, is divided into
three stages:
Stages of
Paleolithic Period
(1)Lower Paleolithic (2 500 000 to 2 000 000 BCE),
(2) Middle Paleolithic (2 000 000 to 40 000 BCE),
(3) Upper Paleolithic (40 000 to 10 000).
Parietal art refers
to artworks applied to
an immovable rock
surface, whereas
mobiliary art refers to
portable artworks.
Petroglyphs - refers to any image
created on rock surfaces by means
of carving, rubbing, scratching,
cutting, engraving, fashioning, or
other similar methods.

SCULPTURE
Sculptures were less common in the
prehistoric society. Pre-historic society
was mobile (nomadic); therefore, a
sculpture was more prone to loss or
damage.

Megalithic Art
Megalithic art is parietal art that
involves the use of large stones as
medium. Many monuments use this
kind of art, but it was mostly used in
Neolithic graves.

These megalithic
structures were
mostly passage and
portals tombs,
gallery, graves, and
burial chambers.
Ancient Egyptian Art
Ancient Egyptian art refers that
flourished in Egypt from 3 000 BCE to
30 AD. The pyramids are considered
the most important contribution of the
ancient Egyptians. The design, size,
and engineering of these great
structures depict somethings
significant about the culture and
society of ancient Egypt.

is the Great Pyramid
of Giza constructed
by king Cheops. It is
138.8 meters (455.4
feet) high and each
base I 230.4 meters
(775.9 feet) long.

of Ancient
Egyptian Art
Modes of representation.
Statues showed an idealized
depiction of gods, royalty,
and government officials.
Hierarchy of scale
Difference in scale was applied to show
hierarchy. In ancient Egyptian art, that
lager the figure, the more important he or
she was.
Use Of Color
Artist regulated the use of color
in their paintings and used it
symbolically. Six colors
dominated the paintings: red,
blue, green, white, black, and
yellow.
Registers
Registers are parallel lines that
separate scenes and give ground lines
for the figures.
Text and
images
There was text in almost
every image. Many statues
have identifying text at the
base or back pillar.
Other Characteristics of Ancient
Egyptian art forms:
• Art forms were characterized by regularity
• Completeness was primary and prettiness was secondary
• The hands of the subject should be on his or her knees
when seated.
• Human figures were static, stiff, and blocky.
• Gods were depicted always in the same appearance.
Horus was represented with the head of a falcon, and
Anubis was represented with the head of a jackal.
