Covid‐19: Vaccination, Quarantine and Other Travel Requirements 
 
1) I am fully vaccinated, can I travel to Spain? Are children required to be vaccinated in order to 
travel to Spain?

2) Which vaccine is accepted? 
At the time of publication of this FAQs page, Covaxine is not admitted while Covishield 
(AstraZaneca) is accepted.

World Health Organization.

4) Do I need to submit the Vaccination Certificate for the visa application? 
No. Vaccination Certificate is required for travelling to Spain for certain categories of 
travellers but is not necessary in order to be able to apply for the visa.

Can I apply for the visa at the Consulate General of Spain, Mumbai? 
The applicant should be residing within the jurisdiction of the Consulate for at least 6 months. In 
case the permanent address on your passport is not within the jurisdiction of this Consulate, you will 
have to submit address proof to justify that your residence is within the jurisdiction of the Consulate.

Schengen Visas

1) Can I travel to Spain if I hold a valid visa issued by a different Schengen country? 
Yes. Consult https://spth.gob.es/ before travelling. Select English. 
 
2) Can I travel to other Schengen countries from Spain? 
Usually a Schengen visa allows its holders the freedom to travel between all of the countries 
of the Schengen territory. However, due to Covid‐19, countries have introduced its own set 
of restrictions on who can enter. Hence, before you plan your trip, check country related 
restrictions by writing to the relevant country’s Consulate/Embassy. Also check the 
requirements of the airlines. 
 
3) Can I travel if I have a valid Schengen Visa on my old passport? 
Yes. Carry both your currently valid passport and old passport containing the valid visa. 
 
4) Can I travel if I have a valid visa but my passport is slightly damaged? 
Apply for a new passport, cancel the previous visa and apply for a fresh visa. 
 
5) Can I apply for Schengen visa if I hold a valid Schengen/National Visa of another Schengen 
zone country? 
No need to apply for a Schengen Visa in this case.

National Visa Process, Requirements, and Fees: 
1) What are the National Visa Fees? 
Until 30‐09‐2021, national visa fees for Indian citizens are INR 5367 per applicant to be paid 
by demand draft in favour of “Consulate General of Spain” payable in Mumbai. Each 
individual applicant must submit one draft for themselves. 
Visa fees are subject to reciprocity between Spain and other nations, hence national visa 
fees for citizens of other countries are different. Consult the visa fees for the third quarter.  
 
2) Are the national visa fees the same for dependents/minors? 
Yes. Irrespective of age, national fees is the same for all national visa categories. 
 
3) In addition to the National Visa fees, do I need to pay any other fees? 
Depending on the category of National Visa you apply, you will be required to pay fees in 
accordance with the codes. For certain visa categories, additional fees are required to be 
paid. 
 
4) Is any other mode of payment accepted? 
No.  
 
5) How do I book an appointment to submit my application at the Consulate? 
Usually BLS International books the appointments for National Visas at the Consulate. 
However, until 30‐09‐2021, the Consulate will be accepting application via courier.  
 
6) How long does National Visa Processing take? 
The national visa application processing time of this Consulate is usually between 2‐3 weeks. 
The  deadline  for  processing  long‐term  visa  applications  is  one  month  after  the  application 
has  been  submitted,  except  for  non‐lucrative  residence  visas,  for  which  the  deadline  is  of 
three months. 
 
7) Is there any fast track or VIP option for national visa processing? 
No. 
 
8) Which long term visa should I apply? 
All applicants have the liberty to apply for any visa which suits their motive of travel. The 
Consulate cannot advise applicants on the category of visa to seek. The Consulate can only 
inform the applicants about which visa categories exist.

9) What is the validity of a Police Clearance Certificate? 
Unless the Certificate mentions otherwise, a Police Clearance Certificate has a validity of 
three months. 
 
10) Is Indian Police Clearance Certificate issued by the local police valid? 
No. It must be issued by the Regional Passport Office. 
 
11) Which hospitals are authorized to issue Medical Certificate? 
As stated under the requirements, any registered medical practitioner (medical doctor) can 
issue the certificate. 
 
12) Which tests are required for the issuance of the Medical Certificate? 
The Consulate does not require any medical reports to be submitted. The certificate should 
be in compliance with the International Sanitary Act of 2005. For the issuance of such 
certificate, the doctor may require you to undergo a series of tests in order to comply with 
the requirements of the clinic/hospital and the mentioned Act. 
 
13) Does a Medical certificate have any validity? 
Yes. Three months from the date of issuance. 
 
14) What is legalisation? 
In order for a document from one country to be legally recognised in another country, the 
document will usually need to be legalised in some way. This usually involves some type of 
certification issued by the country where the document originates that is recognisable in the 
country where the document will be used. 
 
15) What is the Apostille of Hague?  
An apostille is a form of legalisation which is accepted in countries which are signatories of 
The Hague Apostille Convention. India and Spain are both signatories; hence Indian 
documents must be apostilled, for them to be valid in Spain. 
The competent Indian authority to issue the Apostille of Hague on Indian public documents 
is the Ministry of External Affairs.

If you have documents from a country which is not signatory of the Hague Convention, the 
document will have to be duly legalised. 
 
16) Can I submit documents without legalisation / Apostille of Hague? Can this requirement be 
waived? 
Without the required legalisation or apostille, public documents are invalid. It is the 
responsibility of the applicant to submit them either with the Apostille of Hague or duly 
legalised. 
 
17) Which documents need to be legalised or must bear the apostille? 
All public documents should be either legalised or bear the apostille stamp as per country of 
origin  of  the  document.  These  include  but  are  not  limited  to  Birth,  Marriage,  Death 
Certificate, Divorce Deeds, Adoption Deeds, Police Clearance Certificate, Medical Certificate 
and Education Degrees / Certificates. 
 
 
 18) Do documents issued by other EU countries need to be bear the Apostille of Hague? 
No. Public documents issued by other EU member states do not require any apostille or 
legalisation. 
 
19) Are all documents required to be translated to Spanish? 
If the original documentation is in English, the requirement for a translation to Spanish can 
be waived for the visa processing for most categories. The following two categories have to 
present a translation to Spanish. 
Non Lucrative Visa: Cover Letter which details your motive for seeking the non‐lucrative visa 
has to be translated to Spanish. Alternatively, if the applicant speaks Spanish, the letter can 
be written in Spanish. 
Recovery of Long Term Residence: Sworn Translation in Spanish of Police Clearance 
Certificate and Medical Certificate is required. 
 
20) Is a translation from a locally authorized, registered agency accepted? 
As stated above, if the public documents are in any regional or foreign language other than 
English, they must be translated from source language to Spanish directly by a sworn 
translator. In case the documents are in an Indian regional language, they need to be 
translated to English first by a registered translator and later translated by a sworn translator 
to Spanish.

21) Proof of relation: Birth / Marriage certificates, do they have any validity? 
Check if the document mentions any validity. If it doesn’t, Indian Birth Certificate is only 
issued once and is valid for life. It should bear the stamp of apostille. Marriage certificates 
have a validity of 3 months and must be updated with a fresh date or reissued.  
 
22) I am already in Spain, how do I apply for a visa extension? 
Contact the foreigner’s office in Spain (oficina de extranjería). 
 
23) My visa has been rejected. Can I apply again? 
You can either apply for a fresh visa again by paying the visa fees and presenting the 
complete documentation set. 

Authorization to Return / Expired TIE (NIE card) / Lost TIE / PR card 
 
1) Do I need a visa if I have an authorization to return to Spain? 
The authorization to return to Spain states that no visa is required and holder should return 
to Spain directly. This document does not permit transit through other Schengen countries. 
Hence, before you book your flight tickets, check with the airline whether they will allow you 
to board with an authorization. If the airlines refuse, you may apply for a transit visa of the 
 country that you wish to transit. In such cases, please attach a copy of the authorization to 
return and explain your situation in the cover letter. 
 
 
 
 
 
2) My TIE (NIE card) has been robbed/ lost; how do I travel to Spain?

3) How can I recuperate the permanent / long term residence card?

Until 30‐09‐2021 – First Phase fee – INR 1937 for recovery of long term residence, to be paid 
by demand draft. 
Until  30‐09‐2021  –  Second  Phase  fees  –  INR  5367  for  national  visa,  to  be  paid  by  demand 
draft.  

Student Visas: 
All students are requested to go through the questions answered in the previous section. 
 
The section National Visa Process, Requirements and Fees answers various common queries. 

1) Under previous academic certificates, do I need to submit all educational certificates 
including transcripts? 
No. Only send the last degree received or certification related to the next study enrolled. For 
example, if you are going for a Master’s program, submit only your Bachelor’s Degree. 
Transcripts are not required. 
 
2) I have not yet received the school passing certificate / graduation degree; can I submit the 
provisional certificate issued by school/ college/ university? 
Yes. Submit the degree / provisional certificate / passing certificate that you have. Once 
received, we shall go through the documentation submitted. If required, additional 
documents may be requested from the applicant. 
 
3) Do I need to submit the Original Admission Letter? 
Usually yes. Due to Covid‐19 some universities are issuing digitally signed admission letter. If 
your letter is digitally signed, you may submit a print of the same. 
 
 4) In case of a bank loan, what documents are to be submitted as proof of finance/ economic 
means? 
Loan sanction letter in addition to the requirements listed under point 8 of student visa. 
 
 
 
5) In case of education being sponsored by parents who are not employees but own a business, 
what documents should be submitted? 
Submit documents to prove ownership of business, for example GST registration certificate 
in addition to the requirements listed under point 8 of student visa. 
 
6) Can the affidavits of guardianship, requested for minors, be waived if the applicant is 17 
years?  
No. ALL minors must submit the documents listed under point 12 of student visa. 
 
7) If one or both parents are travelling with a minor, are the affidavits of guardianships still 
required? 
If parents only intend to travel to drop the minor, affidavits mentioned point 12 will be 
required.  
If either parent or both intend to live with the minor in Spain during the whole duration of 
the course, guardianship affidavit from Spain will not be required. 
If only one parent is travelling/ or going to stay with the minor, the other parent should 
authorize the travel and stay with other parent. In case only one parent has custody of the 
child, you must submit documentary proof for the same. 
 
8) Can parents travelling to Spain to drop of their children and help them settle apply for the 
visa along with the student? 
Parents will have to apply for a Schengen Visa through BLS International; the student will 
have to apply for national visa directly to the Consulate.
