Rubric Based Assessment- Grade 8BC - Term 2- 2021

1. Open the link shared in the meeting chat: https://phet.colorado.edu/sims/html/gravity-force-

lab/latest/gravity-force-lab_en.html

2. In the bottom right box, click on “Scientific Notation” and don’t change it further
3. From the simulation, without changing anything, note down the following on DAIS sheet and don’t
change it further:
i. Mass m1=____________

ii. Mass m2=____________

4. The ruler in the simulation is movable. What is its least count?
Difference between two successive values on scale
Recall: Least Count = no of divisions between the two values

Least count= ______________ m (note down on DAIS sheet)

5. Move the ruler and place its zero(0) mark at the blue dotted line of mass m1.

6. Keeping the ruler and m1 in fixed position, place mass m2 at a distance 10 m from m1. You will need
to shift the blue ball to the left for this.

7. At this stage note down the following on DAIS sheet:

i. Force on m1 by m2= ____________

ii. Force on m2 by m1=_____________

8. Take a screen shot of the simulation showing evidence of steps 6 and 7. Send it to me on MS
teams personal chat
Data collection
9. Repeat step 6 and 7 , to change the distances between m1 and m2 (d) to 5m, 4 m, 3 m, 2 m note the
force on m1 by m2( F) in the table below

Table 1: (Copy this table on DAIS sheet to note down the data)

Distance between m1 & Force F/ newton

m2 (d)/ metre

Data processing:
10. Follow the instructions in the table head to fill up the next table. First one has been done for you.
Round off to 2 decimal places for the 3rd column. Fill up the last column with the values from last
column of Table 1 above.
Table 2: (Copy this table on DAIS sheet to note down the data)

Graphical Analysis:
1
11. Plot a graph of Force (in 10-7 N) on y axis versus (in 𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐞−𝟐 ) on x axis. [refer to Table 2 for the
𝑑2
values] and show clearly the straight line of best fit.
Make sure that you include units in the axes labels.
Tip: for Force, plot only the magnitude, omit the power of 10!

You will scan and attach the graph while submitting on Exam.net

Conclusion (write only the answers on DAIS sheet)

12. From table 1, we can conclude that as distance between masses ………………………, force between

them …………………………..
13. From the graph that you made, it is possible to say that

𝟏
Force (F) is ……………………………………………. to
